20-cent 7-Eleven tacos fueled deGrom’s $137M deal with Mets

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — All it took were some beef-and-cheese taquitos and 10-for-$2 mini-tacos from 7-Eleven to seal NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom’s $137.5 million deal with the New York Mets.

OK, well, not quite.

“I only had a couple bites,” deGrom said with a smile Wednesday at a hotel outside Washington, where he discussed his new five-year contract on the eve of the Mets’ season opener against Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals.

After weeks of back-and-forth dating to before spring training, it wasn’t until Monday that deGrom and the Mets were able to work out terms, including a guaranteed $52.5 million deferred into the 2030s. There is a team option for 2024 that, if exercised, would raise the total to $170 million over six years, including $67.5 million deferred.

So, how badly do we think the Mets’ medical staff can handle food poisoning?

deGrom is a dead man, unfortunately.

That's a lot of deferred money, too. I wonder how that's parceled out- maybe after Cespedes comes off the books?

apparently it's set to start the year after the bonilla contract is finally laid to rest:

The deferred money will be pushed back 15 years, per Ron Blum of the AP, which sets up a series of payouts beginning in 2035. Amusingly, and surely not coincidentally, deGrom’s payments will seamlessly take over the slot long occupied by annual payouts to former player Bobby Bonilla, Mike Mayer of Metsmerized notes on Twitter.

NOTES: Rookie 1B Pete Alonso will be on the Mets’ opening day roster and is expected to be in the starting lineup. “He showed us, and he certainly showed his teammates, that ... he earned it,” Van Wagenen said. As for whether the team was tempted to have Alonso start the season in the minors to delay the start of his service clock, the GM said: “I do want to focus on winning games. Let’s win as many as we can, as early as we can in the season. And I’m not of the mindset that we should be sacrificing the best product for the fans and the best product for the other 24 guys in that clubhouse to save service time or potential future money six years down the road.”

Re: #5, this came up yesterday on PTI (don't hate me, I'm basically addicted at this point) regarding Tatis Jr. starting the season on the roster. Isola, who I rather hate, was confused and against, Kornheiser was for.

Not too bad a 1-through-six, and number 8 had a pretty good spring. Is it enough against Scherzer today? We shall see...

At least when the deGrom payment day rolls around each year until 2060 Mets fans will have fond memories of him in a Mets uniform to look back on.

I'll tell you what, you'd have to pay me a lot more than deGrom is getting to take 15 years of credit risk against the Mets.

I am sure he will strike out 12 through the first 6 innings, but hoping for that 7th inning home run.

depends on how well McNeil plays third, but: I like this lineup more than I do the one where you swap Lowrie for Lagares and make the OF defense substantially worse. At least they'll have the option.
