Yep Leake and Greinke both won, meaning that both Gold Glove pitchers ended the season in the other league than in which they won their GG.

Is it true that you can't win the Gold Glove without a Silver Slugger-equivalent bat?? (Not pitchers, of course, but enough people say this that it must be a factor.)

#3 -- clearly not. Yolmer Sanchez just won one hitting 252/318/321. Even in the days before fancy defensive stats you didn't have to hit to win one.

Now, there do seem to be times when it's a factor. It probably works more that some guy hits pretty well which draws attention. Once he's got their attention, they start to notice he's not bad with the glove either. He therefore is identified as a "good all-around player" so, what the heck, let's give him a GG, especially if there isn't an actual good candidate we're aware of. Also of course being able to hit some will keep you in the lineup enough to be noticed. Whether a bat is a bigger factor than "highlight reel" plays (Jeter's jump throws, Edmonds' dives), I suspect not.

Now how many Roberto Perez voters thought they were voting for Salvador Perez? :-)

#3 and #4: back in the day the managers and coaches voted on the awards in what appears to have been a hasty and casual manner. Whatever instructions they received didn't bother to, for example, strike DH Rafael Palmeiro's name from the list of 1B candidates. Pure name recognition must have been a very important factor. I'd betcha that Jeter's usual GG win was in a plurality, with superior but unexceptional candidates like Juan Uribe and JJ Hardy and Orlando Cabrera basically splitting up the votes of those that actually spent more than a minute with their ballots.

They've made changes to the process, it now includes a statistical component and perhaps more significantly the voters are presented with some sort of information packet that basically just tells them who the best fielders were. It must hugely influence their choices.

The Gold Gloves have also gotten very boring since they made those changes. For me, it's an argument to resist turning the MVP award into a simple "best player" award - if an award just confirms publicly available statistics, it is uninteresting and arguably unnecessary. But maybe the horse has left the barn on that one. The gold gloves would be more controversial if they made more stupid decisions, but is that really an improvement? Probably not. Sadly this whole award thing was probably doomed to eventual obsolescence as soon as Baseball Reference was born.

Like that Greinke won the NL GG playing for the AL. Always fun when that happens.

Greinke hit .280/.308/.580 this year, which is obviously how he won the Gold Glove.

Kiermaier put up a brutal 228/278/398 this year, so...

Actually, no. I can't point to a single bad decision.

I hope Simmons can get back to his wizardry. Even if the bat doesn't rebound to where it had been, it was a joy to watch him play defense. The ankle sprain looked pretty nasty (he turned it on the edge of a base trying to beat out a grounder to first), and it was clear it wasn't fully healed when he got back in the lineup. I wonder if it will ever completely recover.

Good God is the linked page a nightmare to navigate. Who the hell wants to see that presentation. As always, Yahoo! is the place to go for clean info.
