Make all writers who turned in blank ballots ineligible to vote in 2022. (And also that guy who voted only for Vizquel. I mean, WTF...?)

A few jabronis voted for only Jeff Kent.

Dan Shaughnessy Kent

alrighty then........

I mean, how can someone who follows the sport so closely be so obtuse. He's either trolling, or really quite stupid. I don't mean that Kent doesn't have a case. I mean how can he look at the ballot and think ONLY Kent had a case ?

Because everybody else (a) took steroids, (b) voted for Republicans or (c) kinda sucked?

Not a fan of the blank ballot. You could go a couple routes if you feel that way: you could vote for guys like hunter, buerhle, and Hudson to help keep them on ballot. Everyone knows they won’t make it but what’s wrong with helping them get a second look. Or you could choose to step aside and not submit a ballot

Sending in a blank ballot is like saying you don’t care and you just want to ruin the party.

I could, in theory, imagine a year in which there's no one eligible who meets the hall's standards. but this year wasn't it. (I don't think there ever has been such a year, but we shouldn't auto-reject blank ballots, because there could be such a year)

I don’t get the guys who voted for Bonds but not Clemens (or vice versa)

I would disagree vehemently with such a ballot, but if you are a "Small Hall" voter (so nobody like Wagner, Kent, Jones, etc), who also knocks out players with PED-tainted backgrounds (so no BB/RC, Manny, Sheffield, Sosa, etc), and also thought the character clause knocked out players like Schilling and Vizquel, then you could get pretty closer to a blank ballot quickly.

In my opinion, the toughest player to omit if you use these three "screens" is probably Rolen - no PED, no character issues, and would certainly not be dragging down the standards for third basemen, who are underrepresented in the HOF to begin with. But there are voters who think there should probably only be about 100 players in the HOF, and Scott Rolen is not one of the 100 greatest players of all time, sucks, but you can get to a blank ballot.

Just change the rule, so that if nobody gets 75%, the top vote getter is inducted providing they have at least 50% support.

If this had been applied historically, I don't think any non-HOFer would become one, it just speeds up the process.

Looking back through BBWAA shutout years to 1970, Biggio, Niekro, and Yogi would have gotten in a year earlier.

Say what you will about compilers, but BBWAA should have been fired for not letting Yogi be a first ballot HOFer.

If he doesn't make the leap next year, Schilling will be the first top vote-getter who doesn't get in through the BBWAA. I believe Bunning is the only player to get as high as second and not make it via the writers, though Bonds could match him next year.

Clemens will match Hodges as a third-place finisher relegated to the Vets.

Schilling's the only one of those three, in my opinion, who has a chance next year.

I don’t have a problem in principle with blank ballots, although I think it’s very tough to justify this year. I wonder whether any of them will vote for Ortiz next year, or will they all submit blank ballots again?

I don’t have a problem in principle, in that you should vote for zero if you ever get a ballot where the top player is somebody like Steve Garvey. But in practice, there has never been a ballot that bad. And I kind of doubt there ever will be. If we don’t see a single dud ballot for the years where baseball had 16 teams, I don’t think we’ll see one with 30 teams.

Maybe if no one hits 75%, drop all the blank ballots. If it's still no qualifiers, so be it. That way no one loses out on the Hall due to blank ballots.

How do you vote for Kent and not Rolen ? The only justification is you believe that defense doesn't matter one whit in evaluating a player's career.

Even if you don't put any stock at all in fielding runs in metrics like WAR, the guy won 8 gold gloves, and made 7 all star teams.

He had the exact same career OPS and OPS+, as Kent, and blew him completely out of the water on defense (and baserunning and DP avoidance too for good measure)

I think Gutierrez, who voted for Kent only, was a SF and LAD writer so it’s a hometown vote.

Kent did have 1000+ more PA than Rolen, which is not nothing. and a 123-122 OPS+ edge. so he's maybe a 2 percent better hitter.

but yeah, defense - ok, I got nuthin
