Of course, when you have a good lead, always walk the lead off guy on 4 pitches. Who needs to throw strikes if you have a lead.

EDIT -- and a double play washes away all sins.
   302. Srul Itza Posted: October 18, 2021 at 10:53 PM (#6047327)
I am extremely conflicted for this series. My hatred for the Astros outweighs my hatred for the Red Sox, but only by a litte.

Still, it is an easy choice.
   303. Srul Itza Posted: October 18, 2021 at 10:54 PM (#6047328)
Of course, walk the lead off man on 4 pitches, and then get out of the inning on only 9 pitches total.

Way to make me look stupid, MF.
   304. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 18, 2021 at 10:57 PM (#6047329)
296 - I don’t like it just because you don’t count halftime money. This game isn’t even over yet and even if the Sox win (which looks likely) it’s only a 2-1 series. Don’t poke the bear. I’ll admit I’ve had fantasies of Corrrea being the final out of the series and the whole team doing the point at your watch thing though.
That’s fair…but it’s not like any of that context stopped Correa.
   305. Jay Seaver Posted: October 18, 2021 at 10:59 PM (#6047330)
If I were a player, I'd be demanding the groundskeepers come out after that broken bat, because I want no part of any splinters while sliding into home.
   306. Srul Itza Posted: October 18, 2021 at 11:09 PM (#6047331)
So, is this some sort of deliberate strategy -- walk the first batter and get the next guy to hit into a double play?
   307. Jose Has Absurd Goosebump Arms Posted: October 18, 2021 at 11:10 PM (#6047332)
I think the key part of the double play was the frankly exceptional, dare I say “Hernandezian,” work by defensive replacement Bobby Dalbec.
   308. Textbook Editor Posted: October 18, 2021 at 11:12 PM (#6047333)
Perez should be in for the 9th too.

Ottavino got warm but wasn't used. For them to also not use any high-leverage guys (giving them effectively 2 days off) is a huge plus.

I’ll admit I’ve had fantasies of Corrrea being the final out of the series and the whole team doing the point at your watch thing though.

This would be great, but Machado being the last out in 2018 didn't put Pedroia's knee back together. And then he got mad $ as a FA. Karma-wise, I don't think things are square absent a career-ending knee injury.
   309. Textbook Editor Posted: October 18, 2021 at 11:14 PM (#6047334)
I also like trying to get a Santana AB in here, just to keep him fresh for possible PH duties down the road.
   310. Jose Has Absurd Goosebump Arms Posted: October 18, 2021 at 11:14 PM (#6047335)
Yeah it wasn’t perfect but man wasn’t it glorious to see him make the final out?
   311. villageidiom Posted: October 18, 2021 at 11:15 PM (#6047336)
The Red Sox sure seem to like laundry cart rides.
   312. Jay Seaver Posted: October 18, 2021 at 11:18 PM (#6047337)
Hey, it lets Iglesias contribute.

(It's a thing to worry about in the offseason, but, man, do I really want to find a way to keep Iglesias and Schwarber around next year even if there's not really a place for them)
   313. Jose Has Absurd Goosebump Arms Posted: October 18, 2021 at 11:20 PM (#6047338)
I think Iglesias can be had as a utility infielder. I’m sure he’d like a full time gig somewhere but that may not be in the cards and if it is, so be it, but he’d have 250-300 PA coming his way in that role.

Schwahbah gonna get paaaaaaid.

UP 9, let Perez close it out!
   315. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 18, 2021 at 11:23 PM (#6047340)
Nope, went with the Perez/Sawamura 8th/9th. Gotta keep those 9 and 10 guys in the bullpen fresh!
   316. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 18, 2021 at 11:25 PM (#6047341)
Shift pays off! Shot right to Arroyo in shallow right, easy play in the end.

Oooh, Carlos could be the last out
   317. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 18, 2021 at 11:26 PM (#6047342)
Renfro seals the deal with a nice grab in RF.

That's a nice win for the Red Sox.
   318. Jay Seaver Posted: October 18, 2021 at 11:26 PM (#6047343)
Damn, but that was an impressive stomping.
   319. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 18, 2021 at 11:30 PM (#6047344)
Rodriguez made the one bad pitch to Tucker. Other than that it was total domination.

I say pay him for Boston. He can fake LF/1B and DH part-time. JD is in the last year of his contract. Given where they're at overall, sinking $40 million or so into 2 guys who can play LF/DH/1B isn't the worst thing in the world, and with a full off-season who's to say Schwarber couldn't be perfectly adequate at 1B. That also take pressure off Dalbec (and gives us a good platoon option).

I can see why they wouldn't pay him, of course, but he'd be an almost perfect fit for Boston from 2023 going forward and if you have to cobble together another 6 months of some sort of DH/1B/LF time share with JD before JD leaves, I say do it.
   321. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 19, 2021 at 01:01 AM (#6047358)

I agree with this. JD is 34, Kyle is 28. You don't pay JD again once the contract is up. Funnily enough, Schwarber is a bit more agile then I thought he was. Unless someone goes all stupid and pays this guy like 5/125, I reckon you sign him for 4-5 years at $20 and go with that.

Of Schwarber and Rodriguez, if you could only sign one which would you choose?

I'm with Correa on this one.

I'm not sure, given the payroll, this is an either/or question. I rather doubt Rodriguez is going to command much more than $20 mil a year; it's entirely possible that he wouldn't get the QO guaranteed over multiple years, so I would definitely do the QO and maybe offer 3/$45 and see where that gets you as a starting point?

If he gets something like a 6/$90 deal somewhere, well, godspeed to him. I don't see Bloom offering anyone but absolute lock #1 starters crazy years/money.

Schwarber I'd certainly go 4/$80 or 5/$100, and try to do it quickly--before we know if the NL is going to the DH anytime soon, as that would almost certainly make some team pay him crazy money, given he now has at least a minimum of positional flexibility.

But it all really depends on if the Red Sox actually intend to spend $ again on payroll now that they reset the tax. I think the priority would be getting Devers to agree to a deal to take him into the first few FA years at least, then Xander, then the rest... Although I really suspect Xander's leaving. (And if we are lucky enough to win the WS this year, I'm almost certain Xander's leaving--he'll get crazy $, new worlds to conquer and all that...)

I don't want to complain about a Braves team that's actually 5-1 in the postseason, but the baserunning so far...woof.

I've seen the Braves on the receiving end of this exact inning about a thousand times in the postseason over the last 30 years. It's odd to see it happening to someone else.

   329. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 19, 2021 at 06:53 PM (#6047558)
What I don't understand about the Dodgers is why they don't play Bellinger in CF? Isn't he really good out there? If he can't hit, at least put him at a spot in the field where you maximise his value. Surely any number of players can man 1B? Heck the Red Sox have Schwarber there and he's never even played 1B before.

Albies really seemed to slow down on that slide as his body hit the dirt.

I wonder why more runners don't go into the hard feet-first slide that allows them to pop up and avoids the hand/finger injuries that seem to occur more with the headfirst slides.

Those feet-first slides seem like they allow a runner to go in much harder/faster.
   332. What if I planted tomatoes Posted: October 19, 2021 at 07:21 PM (#6047566)
Braves are hitting singles and doubles and running the bases well/aggressively. I have heard and read about this baseball in ancient texts. Pretty fascinating stuff
   333. yo la tengo (the poor man's Ron Darling) Posted: October 19, 2021 at 07:34 PM (#6047569)
96 pitches and Morton is done. Probably a bit more out of him than they thought they might get. 12 more outs, wonder how many pitchers the Braves will use here
   334. yo la tengo (the poor man's Ron Darling) Posted: October 19, 2021 at 08:16 PM (#6047577)
Is it going to be a new pitcher each inning on out for the Braves?

salvomania, runners doing those hard slides tend to pop up off the base. Headsfirdt ones also allow dodging a tag with a swim move, though I don't see many headfirsters trying to dodge.

salvomania, runners doing those hard slides tend to pop up off the base.

I was spoiled watching Lou Brock as a kid, who had the classic feet-first pop-up slide. Watch in this video, with the steals starting round 3:40, how hard he goes in, and how he's ready to advance immediately on a bad throw. There's never any coming off the base---in fact, you see a lot more oversliding with the headfirst method.

Getting back to Bellinger, Pacheco and the other guy on MLB radio were pointing out, before the HR, that he has the highest pct of "hard hit" balls this playoffs (defined as >95 mph off the bat). It seems to me he was hitting well before that AB as well at one pt he was 3 for 9.

ALso agree with 329, they had him at 1b the other day and they have any number of guys that can play there.

Players are trained to say "we just take it one game at a time" but the Braves better actually believe it.
Because they just about had the Dodgers down 3 games to 0, and let them up off the mat.
And the Dodgers did it with force and conviction. A Bellinger HR, quick single by Taylor, cat'n'mouse throw overs and pitch outs that do not prevent a steal, Betts with go-ahead RBI of runner now in scoring position in the 8th of a tie game.
And then Kenley Jansen. Absolutely filthy.
Dodgers don't just have life, they ended that game looking like the 2021 regular season Dodgers.

Bullsh*t. The pitch was clearly a ball and the ump rung it up late and JD was already walking to first. You can only get that throwing lane call if you actually try to make the throw.

I eagerly await the clever player who strikes out while stumbling into the catcher and wrapping him up completely to prevent a throw. In any event, Las Diaz got part of the play right - I was just paying homage to the topic of ‘catcher’s throwing lanes’, a one time BBTF classic.

I've always wondered why it isn't a ball when the pitcher stumbles during his delivery. It's obviously a balk if someone is on but it seems like once you start your motion, if the ball doesn't move through the strike zone, it should be a ball. Holiding it in your hand is keeping it from moving through the zone.

Not a biggie and I know that's the rule. But it seems weird to me.

Yeah, there should have been a grand slam by now.
