Maybe Cora should consider Dalbec at first/Scwarber in left/Dugie in right for Friday, just to shake things up a bit.

Bumming on the Red Sox. Hope they can get it together for game 6.

Nah, I'm not upset. It's been an amazing season so far. I just hope game 6 is competitive. I'd like to see a good game and hopefully the Sox can get some runs on the board. It's been a bit lean these last 17 or so innings.

Astros radio broadcast plays a different song every time they come back from commercial. Just went with Sweet Caroline.

So everyone who has been hot lately has cooled, like artic level cooling, except Devers.

Nice game by Valdez, hats off to him.

501 - Yeah I’m not sure about that but at the same time I’m sure Dalbec can turn right at first base as well as Renfroe. 3 runs in 2 games obviously isn’t getting it done. It’s a shame because the way Pivetta and Sale pitched I’d have felt pretty good if you told me that up front.

A hill to climb now but I like the pitching set up. Eovaldi on Friday and then EdRod with possibly some mix of Houck, Sale, Brasier, Whitlock for game seven if it gets there. Need the bats to do something though.
   507. Jay Seaver Posted: October 20, 2021 at 08:44 PM (#6047944)
It's kind of amazing how, for all the mix-and-matching Cora was doing at the start of the season, Dalbec v Renfroe is all that's left to try and do something different.

(... and it's over)

503: FWIW I am a Crew fan. Just rooting for the Sox over the Astros. Personally I think the Astros should only get 2 outs per inning on offense and wear clown suits including makeup when playing.

Agree, both held up their end of the bargain. Bats gotta hit, simple as that. Can't be given up 9 runs a game, but gotta figure you'll need at least 5 to beat Houston.

Job well done by their guys. Our guys, not so much.

Can take 2 in Houston. Fox tells me the odds are long, but hey the Sox are still here!
   510. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: October 20, 2021 at 08:56 PM (#6047951)
Games 2 and 3 combined runs total: Red Sox 21, Astros 8
Games 4 and 5 combined runs total: Astros 18, Red Sox 3

Given what these offenses have shown what they can do, and given what these pitching staffs have shown what they can't do, there's no real reason that the Red Sox can't flip the scenario once again. It was only 2 years ago that Houston went back home with a 3-2 lead in the World Series. At this point the odds don't mean all that much.

   511. bunyon Posted: October 20, 2021 at 08:59 PM (#6047952)
Houston/Boston has been a weird series.

Urias relief outing seems to have hurt him.
   512. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 20, 2021 at 08:59 PM (#6047953)
I pretty much expected the Dodgers to come roaring out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, so this has been a very pleasant surprise.
   513. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 20, 2021 at 09:00 PM (#6047954)
Braves bouncing right back, up 3-0 early. Whatever affliction Freeman had early in this series is now over.

oooh, Betts misplays Rosario's double into a triple.
   515. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 20, 2021 at 09:31 PM (#6047961)
Used to be that LA’s two Turners would have had “J. Turner” and “T. Turner” on their jerseys. Lately it seems that teams don’t do that anymore. Anyone else notice this? Any idea why?
   516. Jose Has Absurd Goosebump Arms Posted: October 20, 2021 at 09:34 PM (#6047962)
That’s a good catch. I don’t know.
   517. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 20, 2021 at 09:41 PM (#6047964)
It's not like they're hard to tell apart.

I seem to remember C. Ripken never wore an initial.

New rule: If a pickoff throw does not exceed, say, 65 MPH, it’s a balk.
   519. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 20, 2021 at 09:47 PM (#6047966)
Given the way this postseason has gone, I'm kinda stunned that a starter is being allowed to pitch five innings and allow five runs.
   520. bunyon Posted: October 20, 2021 at 09:58 PM (#6047969)

BABIP alert
thru 5th inning of game 4
BRAVES 30 (non-HR) hits out of 78 BIP (AB minus HR minus KO) BABIP .385
DODGERS 24 (non-HR) hits out of 84 BIP (AB minus HR minus KO) BABIP .286

If LA had 13 extra hits on BIP, they would be 37 for 97, BABIP .381, still less than ATL. So basically they are "owed" 13 lucky drop-in hits.

I wonder at what point in your baseball career you lose your ability to say the word “yeah” without preceding it with an f-bomb. Rookie ball? High-A?
   536. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 20, 2021 at 11:12 PM (#6048004)
It's impressive that the Braves have done all this so far without their best player.
   537. Snowboy Posted: October 20, 2021 at 11:15 PM (#6048005)
CFBF last night said the Dodger comeback felt like a knife to the gut. 3-run HR to tie it by Bellinger, Betts singled in the go-ahead, Jansen no-doubt closed it.
But the Dodgers went back to sleep today, la-la-land.
Freeman's RBI double in the 9th here feels like a dagger.
   538. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 20, 2021 at 11:16 PM (#6048006)
The SB, slid over the bag, reviewed, but not called out, missed call works out when Freeman hits a ground rule double.

"Under Major League rules, a player who steals second base and has the call confirmed on replay review can only advance one base on a ground rule double if said double occurs immediately after the review."

I can see the headlines tomorrow. Dodgers go one better then Red Sox, only lose 9-2!
   544. bunyon Posted: October 20, 2021 at 11:41 PM (#6048014)
Nice catch for his first inning.
   545. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 21, 2021 at 10:55 AM (#6048061)
Max Fried vs. a bullpen game is about as favorable a match-up as the Braves are ever going to see against the Dodgers. It's not "must win" or anything -- the Braves have already proven they can beat Scherzer and knock Buehler out early. But this is the opportunity you build your pitching staff for.
   546. bunyon Posted: October 21, 2021 at 11:39 AM (#6048069)
Indeed. But I sure liked Boston’s position less than 48 hours ago.
   547. Bret Sabermatrician Posted: October 21, 2021 at 03:54 PM (#6048153)
Looking through the LA sports page, you'd think the Dodgers should be 2-0 up in the World Series by now.

I keep seeing the excuse that X, Y and Z are hurt. The Dodgers's payroll is still almost 3x that of the Braves even without those injured players.
   548. bunyon Posted: October 21, 2021 at 04:24 PM (#6048158)
LA has definitely been unlucky with injuries but so has Atlanta.

And in games, 3 tight games have been played. LA won one. A fair expectation would be two from that and they’d be even. Hard to see a rationale for them to be up at this point
   549. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 21, 2021 at 05:06 PM (#6048166)
Let's just say that until I see Ronald Acuna prowling right field I'm not going to have too much sympathy for LA's injuries.
   550. bunyon Posted: October 21, 2021 at 05:44 PM (#6048179)
Sure. But it's interesting how both teams suffered losses and were able to make some up. Without losing Bauer, LA (probably) doesn't have Scherzer. Without losing Acuna, Atlanta doesn't have Pederson. Or Rosario. Or Soler.

Of course, LA lost Muncy and Kershaw too late to really replace them. Atlanta lost Soler for the LCS. But wouldn't have played Rosario nearly so much if they'd had Soler. Likewise, it's hard to imagine Acuna replacing the contribution of Pederson and Rosario. They've been so hot in the two series.

And now LA has lost Turner. And lost two of the three tight games. But they won the tight game 5 with SF. There are always breaks, good and bad. They often don't even out over a short series. They've gone more Atlanta's way than LA's in this series but not so much that it looks like a complete fluke. Healthy and over the long term, I still think LA is a better team. But they don't have much to gripe about.

And, of course, they're in the same position they were last year when they won the World Series. It ain't over.
   551. JustDan Posted: October 21, 2021 at 06:40 PM (#6048190)
And FYI Soler is back for Atlanta. And Atlanta lost Ozuna but he and Bauer feel like different losses than the others

The Dodgers have 3 really good starters and a 4th in Tony Gonsolin, who's fine. Why are they the team who has totally ###### up their rotation?

   557. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 21, 2021 at 08:25 PM (#6048211)
As Red Sox fan, I would like to point out that Joe Kelly still sucks.
   558. with Glavinesque control and Madduxian poise Posted: October 21, 2021 at 08:26 PM (#6048212)
Surely Dave Roberts has radically overmanaged his deep pitching staff. Neither Urias nor Scherzer looked right after their relief appearances, and while I can see the reason for Scherzer's, Urias' seemed totally unnecessary.

As a guy who watched him in several games during his first spring training more than 20 years ago, it's a lot of fun seeing old Albert still getting hits in the 2021 NLCS.

He didn't make the NLCS in 2001, but he did in 2002. I wonder how many other players have NLCS appearances 19 years apart.

WITF would ever want to see a Braves-Astros World Series? Any of the other 3 possible matchups would be infinitely more interesting. You'd have either the long-postponed 1948 Braves-Red Sox Series, a rematch of 2018 with the Dodgers in the favorites role, or a blood feud repeat of 2017, with the Sign Stealers vs. the team managed by the Sign Stealers' mastermind. The only narrative peg for the Braves and Astros would be which city has the climate least suited to human habitation, although in fairness both of those cities are infinitely better than their respective states.

Ron Darling just said that Cory Knebel missed most of the season with a lat injury and was one of the best closers in baseball in Milwaukee. Brian Anderson then said that Cory Knebel was an All-Star closer in Milwaukee and missed most of the season with a lat injury. That was really weird.
   585. Howie Menckel Posted: October 21, 2021 at 11:31 PM (#6048261)
Knebel was a decent setup man in 2015, bad in 2016, a phenomenal closer in 2017, meh/pretty good setup in 2018, did not pitch in 2019, bad in a brief 2020, and good in 26 IP of setup this year.

sounds like an overbid on the broadcast, then

#515 I don't recall either the Laws or Robinsons wearing initial.

Vance Law pointed out that you could tell him from Rudy because he wore glasses.
   587. TomH Posted: October 22, 2021 at 08:22 AM (#6048274)
BABIP update
game 5
BRAVES 4 (non-HR) hits out of 21 BIP (AB minus HR minus KO)
DODGERS 12 (non-HR) hits out of 27 BIP

So they got many of their previous unlucky hits back.

As of this morning, Dodgers hitters have drawn 9 more walks, and struck out 17 fewer times. That is domination of the strike zone.

I confirmed that the Robinsons did via Google image search. The Laws, as you might imagine, are tougher - the only photo I was able to find that showed the back of either of their jerseys was a cached listing for a Rudy Law game-worn jersey that did have the R. on it. Who knows if it was authentic though.

It's weird how "momentum" works on the mind, isn't it. Both Atlanta and Houston are up 3-2 heading home. And, yet, it feels (maybe just to me) that Houston is a near certain lock while Atlanta is an underdog. And, of course, neither statement is anything close to true. Both have a distinct advantage but are a long ways from a lock.

Momentum may be tomorrow's starting pitcher but it feels more like last night's game.

Amusingly, J.D. Martinez has his initials on his jersey because he previously played on a team with another Martinez, and apparently liked it enough that he kept it even though there's nobody else with his last name on the Red Sox. Although I like to say that when they retired Pedro's number, they also retired anyone else just being "Martinez".
   592. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 22, 2021 at 12:20 PM (#6048312)
Rudy Law definitely wore "R. Law" with the White Sox. See 3:58 of this video.

EDIT: You can also see "V. Law" at about 16:25.
