*9 game series
Rather than add playoff teams, and additional rounds of playoffs, MLB could return to its roots and make the World Series & League Championship Series best of 9, with the Division Series best of 7. Potentially 14 more playoff games = more TV $$.

I'm really happy for Dusty. I'll be cheering for him regardless of who they face of against in the World Series.

I was just telling a couple people that. Obviously nearly two decades and a World Series have washed away any resentment I had for Dusty. Seeing his players embrace him after that third out, you can see the same remains true about Dusty wherever he goes: His players love him.
   703. SoSH U at work Posted: October 23, 2021 at 12:24 AM (#6048515)
Gotta like Dusty winning here - just guaranteed himself a hall of fame admission.

Yeah, I think that locks up his Hall case.

Yeah that's what what i #### with in my historical OOTP leagues...

Scherzer’s not starting today. “Arm fatigue”...
   706. bunyon Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:31 AM (#6048527)
Buehler on short rest. Man. Eleventy billion dollars doesn’t buy as much pitching as it used to.
   707. bunyon Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:33 AM (#6048528)
Álvarez out hit the Red Sox over the last two games.
   708. Rally Posted: October 23, 2021 at 11:06 AM (#6048532)
Dodgers started the year with a pair of Cy Young winners in Kershaw and Bauer, both at or near the top of their games. Plus another in David Price, past his prime and working out of the bullpen. Two young pitchers who may have Cy awards in their future. Possibly both getting some votes this year. Dustin May looked like he was having a breakout season early, throwing 99 mph with crazy movement. Add another Cy winner whose prime hasn’t ended in Scherzer. And here we are in game 6, facing elimination, coming off a bullpen day, and they don’t have a comfortable option for tonight’s game.

Proves the old saying, you can never have too much pitching.

Yeah but over the last three games the Sox totally dominated outhitting Alvarez by a whopping 10-9! Whose laughing now? (hint: not me)
   710. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: October 23, 2021 at 11:43 AM (#6048536)
I'm pleased about the outcome but I sure didn't predict it. I should've paid more attention to the Astros' 114 ERA+ and less attention to McCullers' injury and what I saw in the DS.

Now I just hope they beat the crap out of whoever survives in the NL, either the Tomahawk Choppers or the Disneyland Dodgers.
   711. TomH Posted: October 23, 2021 at 01:16 PM (#6048549)
Prediction for tonight
drama-filled, high-scoring ballgame

Braves come to bat in the last half of the ninth down 6 to 5, and bring the winning run to the plate, where the game could end either way on one pitch.
   712. Infinite Yost (Voxter) Posted: October 23, 2021 at 03:55 PM (#6048570)
Dodgers throwing Buehler. Could be great, good be terrible. Will be interesting, one way or the other.
   713. Random Transaction Generator Posted: October 23, 2021 at 04:17 PM (#6048579)
What's the over/under on the number of pitchers the Dodgers use today? 7.5?
   714. Tony S Posted: October 23, 2021 at 04:29 PM (#6048581)
I'm pretty sure it will be a high scoring game. But I think the Dodgers will do all the scoring.

Even as a lifelong Braves fan, I almost feel they deserve to lose for having this dip**** Travis Tritt sing the National Anthem.
   719. Tin Angel Posted: October 23, 2021 at 08:25 PM (#6048614)
Heartwarming to see an eight year old girl behind home plate doing the chop.
   720. TomH Posted: October 23, 2021 at 08:31 PM (#6048615)
ESPN radio is covering the 'Bama football game instead of the NLCS.

Disappointing. But it shows how far MLB has fallen in popularity... even more disappointing.
   721. bunyon Posted: October 23, 2021 at 08:34 PM (#6048616)
719: the chop makes it hard to be a Braves fan.
   722. TomH Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:06 PM (#6048618)
the HITS are once again FALLING the BRAVES WAY tonight.
after 3
Dodgers 1 hit out of 7 BIP
Braves 5 hits out of 9 BIP

   723. bunyon Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:10 PM (#6048619)
To be fair, the Braves BIP have been rockets.
   724. bunyon Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:25 PM (#6048620)
Dodgers got a couple back there.
   725. Tony S Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:26 PM (#6048621)
But Bellinger's non-rocket is the one that actually drove in a run.

I have to miss the game tonight for my sister's birthday dinner,

I think we may have a new "pace of play" topic looming here....

:)

reminds me of my nephew's christening about 30 years ago.
I let sis know that, er, hey, it's my once-a-year Rotisserie League auction that day so....
"No problem," she tells me. "My son will never know, it's my second kid, and I plan on having more!"
[NARRATOR: "She had two more, and Howie attended both of those christenings."]

one of the advantages of being from a large family
   727. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:36 PM (#6048623)
That's a hell of a play by Mookie to keep the runner at third. I think I would have sent him anyway.
   728. Tony S Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:37 PM (#6048624)
A faster runner scores on that one.
   729. Jose Has Absurd Goosebump Arms Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:38 PM (#6048625)
Yeah, with two outs in a low scoring game I think you force them to make the play but I understand holding him. He ain’t quick.
   730. Jose Has Absurd Goosebump Arms Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:41 PM (#6048626)
Like I said, you gotta hold him and trust Rosario to come through.
   731. Tony S Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:41 PM (#6048627)
Washington is a genius for holding d'Arnaud.
   732. bunyon Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:42 PM (#6048628)
I hope Rosario reviewed the fineprint of his deal with the devil
   733. TomH Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:42 PM (#6048629)
Eddie Rosario, 1.250 OPS in the postseason. Of course I knew that was coming. Braves are better off with Acuna hurt!
   734. The_Ex Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:43 PM (#6048630)
Snitker's decision to pinch hit for Anderson paid off. Now it's up for the bullpen to make the back half of the decision pay off.

Great at-bat by the way.
   735. Tony S Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:46 PM (#6048631)
The Dodger hitters are now eyeing the Braves relievers with bad intent.
   736. Tony S Posted: October 23, 2021 at 09:53 PM (#6048633)
Minter looked really sharp there.

I've tuned in to ESPN radio a few times this postseason only to find something other than the game on.

I've been following on the live radio portion of the ESPN app. I really quite like Jon Sciambi and Jessica Mendoza. Good chemistry.
   738. bunyon Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:09 PM (#6048637)
That was a pretty adventurous 5-3
   739. bunyon Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:12 PM (#6048638)
Minter looked good that inning, too.
   740. Tony S Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:18 PM (#6048639)
How does Graterol throw so hard with such an easy motion?
   741. My name is Votto, and I love to get Moppo Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:23 PM (#6048640)
I like the ESPN radio pairings, too. Scambi has a nice dry sense of humor and Sanchez is fine. He teases her a little bit, which I feel rewards those who listen to a few games in a row. Dan Schulman, who did the ALCS, is great too.
   742. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:25 PM (#6048642)
#726 I remember my brother and I sneaking off from our cousin’s Bat Mitzvah to watch Todd Pratt’s NLDS winning homer in 1999. We went back in after the game ended, though.

I made it up to her a few decades later when I officiated her wedding.
   743. My name is Votto, and I love to get Moppo Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:25 PM (#6048643)
This is a minor indictment of the product, but I listen to the ESPN radio feed while I do evening chores, from roughly 8:30-9:15, then decide if I want to watch the game, or turn to Netflix.
   744. My name is Votto, and I love to get Moppo Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:32 PM (#6048644)
This Vesia guy has A+ reliever facial hair. Can’t throw a strike in this game, though.
   745. The_Ex Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:47 PM (#6048646)
Wow, Jackson wouldn't throw a fastball to the last two hitters. You just can't do that. He could be costing the Braves two games.
   746. Tony S Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:48 PM (#6048647)
Scherzer's extra day of rest will wind up working out perfectly for the Dodgers.
   747. Zach Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:50 PM (#6048648)
Big at bat for Pujols here.
   748. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:54 PM (#6048649)
The Anaheim Pujols returns.
   749. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:57 PM (#6048650)
The Dodgers can whine about injuries all they want, but they had two Hall of Famers up this inning with the chance to take the lead, and neither one of them got the job done.
   750. phredbird Posted: October 23, 2021 at 10:57 PM (#6048651)

omg what a terrible AB by betts ...
   751. Snowboy Posted: October 23, 2021 at 11:00 PM (#6048652)
Taking Graterol out another Roberts mistake. No runs yet, but he burned him, Vesia, and Trienen to get one out.
Trailing 4-1 with 9 outs to go, Dodger hitters appear to lack urgency.

Sorry, now 4-2 with 6 outs to go. And at least six outs to get, maybe nine.
   752. Jose Has Absurd Goosebump Arms Posted: October 23, 2021 at 11:00 PM (#6048653)
Mookie never looked comfortable. IMO he hasn’t looked right all post-season, both at the plate and in the field. I don’t know if he’s hurt or what but he’s been off.
   753. bunyon Posted: October 23, 2021 at 11:07 PM (#6048655)
On the other side, Jackson has been bad.
   754. phredbird Posted: October 23, 2021 at 11:08 PM (#6048656)

i agree w 752, but jeez here's a pitcher pumping in fastballs and fastball hitter betts doesn't even swing? a bingle ties the game, fer chrissakes.

   755. Howie Menckel Posted: October 23, 2021 at 11:09 PM (#6048657)
Matzek enters a 4-2 game with tying runs at 2nd and 3rd, none out in the 7th
and gets
WHIFF Pujols
WHIFF Souza
WHIFF Betts

that's pretty good
   756. Zach Posted: October 23, 2021 at 11:11 PM (#6048658)
I like the typo there. In my mind a bingle is the most pathetic single there is. The first baseman falls down. The left fielder was talking to someone in the stands.
   757. bunyon Posted: October 23, 2021 at 11:17 PM (#6048659)
Efficient
   758. bunyon Posted: October 23, 2021 at 11:26 PM (#6048660)

   764. phredbird Posted: October 23, 2021 at 11:45 PM (#6048668)

Would have been fun to see Pujols come up there.

   771. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 23, 2021 at 11:53 PM (#6048675)
I’ll watch every game because it’s the World Series, and I’ll root for it to go to Game 7 because after that is winter. That said, I don’t think I’ll be able to find a way to want either team to win.
   772. bunyon Posted: October 23, 2021 at 11:56 PM (#6048676)
771: totally fair. I’ve watched many series that way.

I won't be clued to my TV, but this is the first series since 2010 where I'd be perfectly fine with either team winning.
   775. Mike A Posted: October 24, 2021 at 12:12 AM (#6048682)
The little kid who stayed up listening to Dale Murphy and Bob Horner on the radio is kinda beside himself right now.

It's my own little silent protest against Rob Manfred jumping into bed at the behest of Big Gambling. Last games I watched were the 2019 Series.

Can't tell if this is a dare or just a clever reply in the ISWYDT vein, but I'm at an age now where I'm crotchety enough and stubborn enough to do it simply out of spite unless a gambling-free broadcast stream comes into existence. Once I realized how often I was reflexively changing the channel away from MLB Network or just turning the TV off any time they would start shilling for DFS, it was easy enough to tune it out altogether and the games followed and then the other sports followed with it. I'm neck deep in a Strat-O-Matic card creation project (1918 season in full Super Advanced glory with other deadball seasons to probably follow) and that's doing just fine scratching the baseball itch for me.
   779. Itchy Row Posted: October 24, 2021 at 02:15 AM (#6048689)
Everyone is correct. Baseball sucks now and even on a website catering to hardcore baseball fans, the only people who will watch the World Series are doing it as a last resort.
   780. Baldrick Posted: October 24, 2021 at 09:20 AM (#6048692)
I just moved to Sweden and have been lamenting that it's now basically impossible to watch playoff games, since they tend to happen from 2-6 AM.

So the nice thing about this Series is that I no longer have any sadness about missing the games.

Translation: If "my" team's not playing, I'm taking the ball and going home.

This may not be the most compelling matchup from an historical perspective, but it's still got the best AL team vs an NL team that's peaked at just the right moment. It looks a lot better now than it would have before the postseason began. I just wish they'd start the games an hour earlier.

Same here, but a large portion of the Braves’ fan base is insufferable. There is a lot of self-righteousness about having lost the All Star game and now playing in the World Series.

It also doesn't help that they trotted out a prominent anti-vaxxer to sing the National Anthem.

Yeah, I wasn't happy about that, as noted in this thread.

There are those of out there who are working to change Georgia and it does get a little frustrating to be constantly lumped in with the troglodytes. This state is very divided, even our Governor couldn't resist taking a shot at MLB and Stacey Abrams(?) when most of us just wanted to enjoy the win. But, whatever, Shemp can't stop me from being excited.

One thing I'm sad about is Hank didn't make it long enough to see the Braves reach the WS this year.
   787. Infinite Yost (Voxter) Posted: October 24, 2021 at 11:50 AM (#6048710)
The thing about the Dodgers-Braves game that annoyed me most is that they pushed back the start time so that again I couldn't stay awake through the whole thing.

Anyway, I guess I'll be rooting for the Braves to administer a richly-deserved beatdown to the Astros. Though I'll be asleep when I do it, no doubt.

I was able to catch up with the game on DVR without being spoiled. Matzek's sixth inning was some real Avengers-level superhero stuff. Blowing three fastballs by Mookie Betts with the World Series more or less on the line is the kind of thing you put in the first sentence of a player's retirement announcement.
