If I'm going to be forced to watch a bunch of teams I don't like in the coming weeks, Mookie vs. Boston might be the best storyline.

4th inning, idiot.

Earlier today I imagined the least likeable post season lineup... that would be in the NL Cardinals, Dodgers, Giants, Braves with Mets and Phillies being the wild card... in the AL I thought it would be Red Sox, Yankkees...Whatever team TLR was managing, Asstros, and well that is it...

Sadly we are still looking at Red Sox, Astros and the Braves and Giants/Dodgers representing the potential world series... No matter what it's going to be an evil world series in which nobody outside of the home city is rooting for the team.

And please, TikTok that ####.

Whoa, Angel fan does NOT have anything too disparaging to say about Red Sox...news at 11!

Jokes aside, between you and the DiScarna poster, it would seem there are a few Angels fans not pleased with the Red Sox progression thus far ;-)

I'm looking forward to seeing this series go 5(in spite of the rantings of the at-at guy). I think the winner here will go all the way(yeah, not really reaching there...)

That's enough reason for me to root for the Astros. I still love the Tiny Terror Tot. And in the LCS it'll be the Sign Stealers vs the Sign Stealers' former mastermind, which should make for a great narrative.
   612. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: October 12, 2021 at 10:50 PM (#6045958)
Well, the Rays got cheated, the Astros cheated again... the Braves have Freddie Freeman (wtf!) and the Todgers bought 'em all !
Let's go Bryants !
   613. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2021 at 10:52 PM (#6045959)
That is what the off city rooting is going to be, all about the player they like. Not the team... Nobody in the midwest has any love for any of the teams in it. If you replace the Braves with the Cardinals, you have your perfect storm of all hated teams.

For my wedding party in 2002, my wife and I took our families to an Angels game. It was the first game my parents had ever been to. It was also Rally Monkey giveaway day. Unluckily for us, a big group of Red Sox fans found out that it was our wedding party, and proceeded to tear up their monkeys and rain parts of them down on us for several innings. When we called security, they scattered, then came back a few innings later to do it again.

I don't just hate the Red Sox. Hate doesn't do justice to the intensity of my negative feelings towards that franchise and their fans.
   618. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: October 12, 2021 at 10:56 PM (#6045964)
If Kapler wins this game, I will buy a Giants jersey, for like $250 !

BTW, if anyone has like a couple of hundred of bucks left over, I would take them gladly. (Just in case...)

The only team I wanted to lose, the brewers , have lost. I’m neutral on giants and LAD but i think LAD is the better team by a hair. But Red Sox /Astros - ughhh.

I’d be ok with astros winning as long as they lose the WS but I can’t take that chance and hope the Red Sox win and then lose badly in four straight games in the Series. No good options there

I doubt the Braves can keep up with either the Dodgers or the giants.

I didn't experience anything quite as bad as your story, but Red Sox fans (at Angel Stadium) remain the only ones to curse at my children (they were under 10 at the time).

I worked at the stadium for a few years during high school and college and it was a toss-up who was ruder, Yankee or Red Sox fans. The only difference is that Yankee fans would tip well after they complained about the food.

I've been to Fenway twice. Awful both times. I wore neutral colors but the abuse hurled at anyone even hinting at rooting for the other side was beyond fan behavior. And the jeers toward the opposing players was profane, using words even at the time you wouldn't use in polite society. It's a sample size of two and they were cheap seats. The aggressors were young men in their cups. But, still, it wasn't pleasant.

It's easy to think the Dodgers are far superior to everyone else. And, yet, in the same division, a team beat them over 162. Them losing over 5 or 7 will not be a surprise. I don't know why the Giants are so good, but they won 107 games and were hot down the stretch. Hard to say the Dodgers are far beyond them. (Both are far beyond the Braves)
   689. The Duke Posted: October 13, 2021 at 10:32 AM (#6046050)
I don’t think I’ve ever experienced worse fans than Red Sox fans. Drunk, obnoxious, largely uninformed, often racist. It’s really a shame. There is nothing better than walking from downtown to a Red Sox game and back again and experiencing Fenway park. What a bunch of awful people they draw to their fandom, though.

And if you consider what it costs to get a Red Sox ticket it’s amazing how terrible the fans are. You’d think at that price you’d get a more civilized breed of people.

The crowds at Fenway always remind me of a tame version of English football fans.
   690. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: October 13, 2021 at 11:02 AM (#6046062)
I've only been to Fenway about half a dozen times, and the last time I was openly rooting for the Orioles without any pushback from the Yahoos. Of course this was a Sunday afternoon game and the Yahoos might've just been sleeping it off from the night before. My only problem with Fenway is the ticket prices, and AFAIC all stadiums should have such loud and enthusiastic fans.

Of course the ultimate ballpark experience was described by Frankie Frisch in 1931. He was talking about a Cubs-Cardinals doubleheader in Sportsman's Park:
The mob broke up the Cubs' infield practice, moving in front of the infielders to grab ground balls and run away with them. It was a hot, sultry day, with a threat of rain, and with that rich box office bonanza in danger, [Cardinals' owner Sam] Breadon marshaled help from the office and from the dugout to push back the crowd so the doubleheader could be started.

It was a joke. When they pushed back the center field section of the crowd, the mob bulged out behind first and third base. When they tried to push the ends, the middle bulged toward second base. Fans in foul territory blocked both dugouts and also the view of the box seat customers, who had to stand up to see the players on the field. Spectators in fair territory were only about 70 feet beyond first base, perhaps 100 feet behind third, and not more than 150 feet behind second....

Conditions were worse in the second game, which we won by the ridiculous score of 17 to 13. There were 32 doubles hit in the doubleheader, a record 23 of them in the second game. Not more than 5 or 6 of them were legitimate two-baggers.

During the intermission between games the crowd milled around curiously, surrounding the pitcher and his catcher warming up. By this time the sun was bearing down. It was red hot and the crowd tried to move from the sunny right field locations to shadier spots on the left field or third base side. Most of the mob, as the second game was played, was bunched behind third base, not more than 50 or 75 feet behind the second baseman, and that's where most of the pop flies dropped for doubles.

Fans even climbed to the dusty pavilion roof and many stood on top of the grandstand wall behind home plate. It's a wonder foul balls didn't kill somebody, but remarkably nobody got hurt.

In 1931 the official capacity of Sportsman's Park was 30,000. The announced attendance that day was 45,715.

Just to be clear, I would not extend my complaints about my Fenway experience to Red Sox fans in general. I know many, IRL and here, who are wonderful, kind people. I'm not sure if my two experiences are representative of Fenway generally or not. If they are, the fault is more on the folks running the show for not trying to maintain order. If it's not representative, I got unlucky. Not a big deal. But I have no itch to go back.

Re 692: That game had a whopping 123 events (AB + BB + side changes + pitching changes) in 164 minutes, or 1.33 MPE. Your typical playoff game these days is around 2.2 MPE, so if it were played today it would've taken about four and a half hours. Yikes!

Dodgers using an opener tonight, going with RHP Knebel, most likely for just 1 inning to be followed by Urias.

...I kinda really hope this backfires on them.

Bellinger at first seems odd. Why not Beaty?

I like the opener - the Giants' top of the order has had a lot of success against Urias. Especially on the road where you don't want to play from behind.

Brandon Belt would be useful in situations like this. If only the Giants had one of those....
