Atlanta was one of the few teams at the outset I was OK seeing win it all. It's been a while and their story is pretty cool seeing them make it here without one of their best hitters, along with their pickups in response to that injury having such a big impact. Who would've thought of all the Cub trades, Joc Peterson would be the last one standing in the postseason?

Don't really care for Houston, but it's been 18 years, so I'm ready to see Dusty finally get a ring.

Basically, I'm cool with either team winning it all, so let's get seven games. But I'll say Houston in six.

My prediction is that there is going to be a whole lot of hullabaloo over the Braves "War Chant".

The cheating is one thing, and how you feel about that depends on you and your perspective, but I think the thing that's annoyed me the most about this whole run is how the Astros dealing with the cheating fallout and taunting is consistently framed as them overcoming some sort of adversity, almost like it's a feel-good against all odds story about perseverance. That's a dumb reason to be annoyed with the Astros winning - at least compared to the cheating and other issues they had - but it's just drives me crazy. Sure, I wish the Astros had been punished more and there was a way the players could have had to deal with more than just some extra boos. Ignoring all that, this Astros team is really freaking good and actually pretty entertaining to watch and like other Cubs fans, time has changed my perspective on Dusty to the point that I would enjoy seeing him finally win (and him winning now doesn't retroactively absolve him for his role in the Cubs bedshitting).

Similarly, there's a lot to like about this specific Braves team and I appreciate the message of them winning would send about trying to win vs tanking. But yeah, the chant is just ####### annoying even if you ignore the insensitivity and tone deafness of it.

So, in conclusion, I would like a long and close series.
   5. bunyon Posted: October 26, 2021 at 12:14 PM (#6049125)
I hate the chant and did as soon as it became a thing for the team I'd rooted for for 15 years (when it started). Whatever. The Braves winning would make my Dad, where ever he is, smile. The Astros winning would make my uncle smile.

Pretty simple. I'll hope for seven and let them duke it out in the great beyond.

I would like to see seven crisp, drama-filled games with a lot of great defensive plays and no botched calls.
   7. salvomania Posted: October 26, 2021 at 12:48 PM (#6049136)
And I want to see starting pitchers go at least 5 innings every game.

My ideal WS would have been Houston vs. San Francisco, but this is great, too. I still think the absence of McCullers is eventually going to cost Houston, but I hope it's a good series with memorable performances, and I certainly won't be upset to see Atlanta win it all if that's the way it shakes out.

Yep, the 7 2/3 innings he would have been allowed to pitch will be sorely missed. :)

Sorry, immigrants don't have ponies.

No dog in this fight, just want a long, exciting series and hopefully each team will use at least 6 pitchers per game.

Watching the international feed. It seems that a Craig Bagswell played with Craig Biggio. I don't remember him.

It sounds like Dan Plesac with the Bagswell comment.

My official predictions for this series:

Game one: Braves 75, Astros 0
Game two: Braves 83, Astros 0
Game three: Braves 51, Astros 0
Game four: Astros 3, Braves 2
Game five: Braves 93, Astros 0

Just a thought: If MLB realizes it has a problem with being perceived as slow, maybe they should tell Smoltz to stop going on about the virtues of pitchers “slowing the game down.” He does it in every damn game.
   24. bunyon Posted: October 26, 2021 at 09:04 PM (#6049237)
1) MLB doesn’t realize it.

2) he’s telling what makes for a more effective pitcher and why there isn’t anything other than an explicit rule against slowing down to make them change.
   25. Doug Jones threw harder than me Posted: October 26, 2021 at 09:07 PM (#6049238)
Jorge Soler was awful for the Royals April-June. He has had an OPS > .860 since then, including an entire July over .870 for the Royals.

Is BBRef correct that the Royals just got a middling high-A relief pitcher for Soler? Seems like with him having a hot month they could have gotten a little more.

So do the Astros have this terrible behind the pitcher view so their guy in center has a better view to see signals?

Shelby Miller! Haven't heard that name in a long time. Haven't added up the WARs, but I'm guessing the Braves won that trade.

I wasn’t watching - did Morton get hurt or are they just pulling him with a 5-0 lead in the third freaking inning?
   32. bunyon Posted: October 26, 2021 at 09:36 PM (#6049245)
Hurt. Because we can’t have starters.

19 WAR difference to date per bref.
It would have been a wash if they only traded him for Aaron Blair.

My stream quality is such that it looks like I’m watching the 1991 series. Or maybe 1971.
   38. Bret Sabermatrician Posted: October 26, 2021 at 09:55 PM (#6049253)
Braves were 44-28 after the All Star break.

Their 6 post-all star acquisitions were worth 4.3 WAR per bref. Basically 1 Acuna.
   39. My name is Votto, and I love to get Moppo Posted: October 26, 2021 at 10:02 PM (#6049254)
I'm amazed that Shelby Miller was in the majors this year (only 12 IP). His Braves season was notable in its bad luck: a 6-17 record with a 127 ERA+. Not as unfortunate as Nolan Ryan's 1987, when he was 8-16 with a 142 ERA+.
   40. bunyon Posted: October 26, 2021 at 10:03 PM (#6049255)
It’s shocking how well they played after losing Acuna. I gave up on them at that point.

Miller also came within one out of a no-hitter in 2015. The Kent Mercker Curse lives on.

The Braves' Twitter feed is saying that Morton fractured his fibula and is, as you might expect, out for the World Series.

That's a gut punch.
   45. bunyon Posted: October 26, 2021 at 10:20 PM (#6049265)
How did Morton keep going after breaking his freaking leg?
   46. bunyon Posted: October 26, 2021 at 10:22 PM (#6049266)
Rosenthal had that info on the broadcast. My picture is crap but the audio is perfect.

I'm going to want to see the HP ump's report card after this game, because it sure looks like he's given Astros' pitchers a pretty damn big strike zone.

They were kinda the consensus team to win the division this year in almost all pre-season polls, they just started slow, and nobody else in their division was worth a crap, so even without Acuna they were more than likely going to find their way into the title.
   49. cardsfanboy Posted: October 26, 2021 at 10:27 PM (#6049269)

The Braves might be up 3-0 before his next scheduled start anyway.

Nothing says “pace of play” like a catcher mound visit, then a manager mound visit, *then* a pitching change.

Proposed rule: Any mound visit while a reliever is warming up must result in the pitcher being removed. In doing so, the manager must first signal to the bullpen upon emerging from the dugout. Only when the reliever has entered the field of play may the manager approach the mound.

Jesus. Dusty pulls the same #### again - has a nice long chat with the pitcher, presumably explaining in detail why he’s about to take him out. That’s an ump failure.

He legit looked serviceable in the spring for the Cubs. Unfortunately for him, it was just spring training.

Stanek not exactly supporting the “pitchers are athletes” argument.

back in town after another junket, and it's 11:42 pm ET and 5-1 in the top of the 8th of Game 1 WS.

have watched very little, and cannot imagine any sentient being just sitting on the couch and "wearing" all these commercials and ludicrous delays between any action.

will wait at least through 2 games, I promise, before reiterating remedial/satisfying solutions (which won't solve the preposterous real-time end of games ET, alas).
   59. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 26, 2021 at 11:47 PM (#6049299)

   61. bunyon Posted: October 26, 2021 at 11:54 PM (#6049302)
Yeah, I don't think I could only watch the game. Been doing some work. And the wine ElRoy Face mentioned.

And Gurriel starts his slide like 15 feet from the bag and runs into an out in the 8th...

Asian people are not displeased with this outcome.

   65. bunyon Posted: October 27, 2021 at 12:07 AM (#6049308)
There was a bottle of Cab Sav from something my wife did a few nights ago. Had left over spaghetti heated in the microwave. Our nights may have differed in quality.
   66. bunyon Posted: October 27, 2021 at 12:08 AM (#6049309)
To be fair, I should have heated it on the stove. My wife's sauce is excellent. But I am lazy.

I genuinely love leftover spaghetti. Assuming that the pasta wasn’t overcooked to begin with such that it turns to mush on reheating. But as I’m sure you’re well aware, a good sauce is often even better the second time around.
   68. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 27, 2021 at 12:13 AM (#6049311)
So every time they show Joe Buck in the booth I can't help but think of the Seinfeld episode where George has the ladies glasses.
   69. bunyon Posted: October 27, 2021 at 12:15 AM (#6049313)
Yeah, it was really good. The pasta didn't do well in the microwave. The wine is good, too. Not great.
   70. bunyon Posted: October 27, 2021 at 12:16 AM (#6049314)
Altuve is good enough with the bat to go the other way against the shift. It's the world series and you're down 4. Get on base.

I think ARod just said that in the past 23 years, teams that win Game 1 are 20-3 in the Series. I assume that must be cherry-picked to some extent because why 23? But nonetheless I’m a little surprised by the lopsidedness.
   79. Bret Sabermatrician Posted: October 27, 2021 at 07:07 AM (#6049329)

Was this mentioned during the broadcast last night? I only caught about half of the game.
   83. bunyon Posted: October 27, 2021 at 11:10 AM (#6049360)
It was. Rosenthal broke the news very quickly. X-Ray as soon as Morton came out. News out very quickly after that.

For the record, Gibson only pitched to three more batters after the Roberto Clemente line drive broke his leg.
   85. salvomania Posted: October 27, 2021 at 12:05 PM (#6049368)
After breaking his leg, on June 29, Gibson's ERA stood at an un-Gibson-like 3.52 through his 16 starts.

He returned to action on September 7, and over his remaining five starts he allowed only four earned runs to finish the season with a 2.98 ERA.

I'm going to want to see the HP ump's report card after this game, because it sure looks like he's given Astros' pitchers a pretty damn big strike zone.

He only missed 8 calls, but it seems like they all went in Houston's favor. At least the most "impactful" ones all benefited the Astros.

I wonder if the strike zone varies with margin like it does with count? Bigger for the team way behind than the team that is far ahead? I could see that being a subconscious bias.
