2022 MLB Field of Dreams Game: Four things to know with Cubs, Reds set to meet in Iowa

How to watch the Field of Dreams Game
Where: Dyersville, Iowa | When: 7:15 p.m. ET on Thursday, Aug. 11
TV channel: Fox | Live stream: fuboTV (try for free)
Odds: TBD

Now for a few things to know about the 2022 edition….

2. Joey Votto and Ian Happ will be mic’d up
MLB has leaned into having mic’d-up conversations with players in the dugout and even on the field while the game is ongoing, and not surprisingly that’s going to be the case on Thursday night. The lucky/afflicted players for this game will be Reds first baseman Joey Votto and Cubs outfielder Ian Happ. They’ll be rocking the two-way mic at some point during the game. Given Votto’s engaging presence and sense of humor, he could be an ideal fit for this sort of thing.

Votto commentary is never boring but otherwise this kitsch got boring fast.

During a cross-country drive 16 years ago this month, a friend and I stopped off in Dyersville and played a little catch on the diamond used for the film. (We heard no ghost, as he must have been checking in at the Pfister that day.) Other than the sight of corn beyond the outfield fence, the new ballpark, apparently a few hundred meters from the old field, looks no different from any other stadium.

5. The Cubs and the Reds both suck.

I think it’s cool. MLB needs more out-of-the-box promos like this.

A man hears Fox is testing a reanimated Harry Caray in hologram form for tomorrow's Field of Dreams game? Someone who has seen the footage says it is "unconvincing" and "possibly offensive"

Apparently the giveaways were that the hologram was sober in the 7th inning and could pronounce the Latin players' names.

They promised us flying cars; they gave us hologram Harry Caray.

Cardinal announcers said that the Field of Dreams game last year was the highest rated regular season game. (I can't remember how long ago, but over several year time period)

Highest rated since 05. That surprised me. I thought you might have to go back to the 20th century to find one higher than last year's game.

How much longer until MLB honors a better Costner baseball film and pimps Sarandon, Robbins, and Wahl at a game in Durham?

I don't know about that, but I think MLB would be well served to find other locations to play - at the field where the Midnight Sun game in Alaska is played, for instance. Places where baseball has been played, or is still played, and not just inside a stadium. I think it would make an excellent annual game (which really started with the smart move to play the game in Williamsport).

Baseball has a few advantages over the other sports with this type of thing.

First, if you have a game that only a couple of thousands fans can attend, it's not a big deal in a sport with 162 games.

More important, baseball is the only one of the four team sports where play doesn't end at the boundaries. So, hitting it into the corn isn't out of play like it would be in basketball, but the goal. I think that brings in the surroundings so much more than simply dropping a football field somewhere.

Hologram Harry was bad. Can we just let people remain dead?

Wake me when they develop a hologram of Gussie Busch's wife...

Winning pitcher Drew Smyly's daughter, Parker, was in attendance on her 5th birthday. Sounds way cooler than my 5th birthday party.

The ratings did slide nearly 50% from last year, but this year's game was still the most-watched baseball game of the season.

DYERSVILLE, Iowa – Thursday’s Field of Dreams game between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs was the most-watched game of the regular season, but it wasn’t as much of a hit out of the park as last year.

FOX’s broadcast averaged 3.13 million viewers, according to a press release from Fox Sports, which topped all broadcasts on any network. Viewership peaked with 3.46 million viewers an hour into the game, which the Reds lost, 4-2.

Still, it was nowhere close to last year’s Field of Dreams game, which drew 5.9 million viewers to watch the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. Last year’s game, which ended with a walk-off homer from White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson, was the most-watched regular season game since 1998.

The 47% drop in viewership wasn’t unexpected. This year’s game featured two rebuilding teams and it was a repeat trip to specially constructed stadium next to the 1989 film site.

Cincinnati was the top local market for Thursday’s game, drawing a 12.2 rating and a 30 share, which means 30% of people watching TV in Cincinnati between 7-10:45 p.m. tuned into the game, according to Nielsen Media Research and Adobe Analytics.
