2022 NBA Playoffs thread

I estimate the NBA thread only had 10-12 years of content so we’re in reruns already.

I suppose I'm most interested to see how this pairing will change Trae's game. How will playing off the ball more affect his shooting? Will his effort on defense improve, or will simply having a good defender alongside him in the backcourt just reduce how exposed he is on defense?

Gobert is markedly better than Capela. He's also a lot more expensive. I'd like to see Capela moved (especially if they see OO as a building block / part of the future core) and a guy with more range on a cheaper deal brought in. (There are several nice options in FA that ATL could pursue. Also, acquiring Muscala as I did in our draft (which we didn't finish) could've been nice for them.)
I'd be inclined to keep Collins if the relationship b/w player and team can be salvaged. He fits with either Murray or Young running the show.
Agree that teams should shoot their shot and make risky moves. I don't quite think ATL was ready to do that - they keep thinking they're a year farther along (or farther away in some financial respects) than I think they are.
I'm super not inclined to bet on him but ohhhhboooy do they need Hunter to pan out. That's a load bearing piece of this team.

big unanswered q - will the Hawks pay the tax? Will they be a repeater? (I was trying to get them just under OR land major upgrades in our mock. Looks like they're electing to do plan B.)

Austin Krell @NBAKrell
Windhorst just alluded to the possibility of the Sixers making more than just marginal moves on @GetUpESPN. Reiterates that Tobias Harris has been on the trade market.

in other news: money is green, water is wet and white people love "the wire".

Players with 13 PPG and 13 RPG on 53 FG% or better in their career:

— Wilt Chamberlain
— Andre Drummond

Drummond has played 15 MPG less than Wilt.

My gut tells me Tobias Harris will be a Sixer next season. I just don’t think they’ll be able to[/ed] move him. #Sixers

i don't usually do this, but i felt a need to correct this particular tweet, for some unknown reason.
   3508. spivey Posted: June 30, 2022 at 12:49 PM (#6084770)
I don't think Steph at the time was better than Trae Young now. Probably (obviously, with hindsight) had a higher ceiling because of defense and telling him to just keep shooting more and room to grow on ball. Trae led Atlanta to the conference finals and a #2 offense last year.

I think the issue with Trae is, if his initiation game isn't working, he's legitimately a candidate for worst player in the NBA. He couldn't create an advantage against Miami in the playoffs, and if he can't get you that, then he's just immediately the worst player on the court because he does nothing else.

To an extent. But it's often just in dealing with one of a couple teams with questionable FOs, or just swaps of the worst 5-10 contracts in the NBA. It's still really hard, as Houston found out with John Wall and the Lakers are finding out with Westbrook.
   3511. Fourth True Outcome Posted: June 30, 2022 at 12:57 PM (#6084774)
Yeah, any contract can be moved, but I don't think any contract can be moved by a team that wants to preserve the rest of its roster and contend. The Lakers could probably move Westbrook if they took on dead weight and absolutely mortgaged their draft future, but they don't seem to have the assets otherwise. The Sixers could probably move Harris similarly, but not without taking the kind of roster/draft equity hit that I can't see Morey accepting. Moving a terrible contract seems much easier for a team that is tanking and doesn't need to stay good than for a team that is trying to shed the one millstone around its cap sheet's neck.

you're not wrong, but those kinds of moves are usually made as a means of "addition by subtraction." and for as much as i don't particularly care for tobias tharris, that doesn't actually apply in his case because he's not bad; he's just aggressively middling.

which is why the "rumor of choice" tends to be based around swapping him for harrison barnes, which funnnily enough, satisfies both of the conditions outlined by spivey in [3510]:

Zach LaVine has told people he plans to re-sign with the Bulls. He and the Bulls are expected to quickly work on a five-year max contract worth roughly $215 million.

From here. That's a lot of money.

reportedly he wants to go to the suns --- i don't think the nets can easily do this as a sign and trade for ayton (would be hard capped at the apron)

Wowsers, that's big. One immediately wonders if Kyrie opted in after they both agreed to blow it up, or if KD is doing his own thing. I'd assume the former, but the latter is much juicier to contemplate.
   3522. JJ1986 Posted: June 30, 2022 at 03:06 PM (#6084796)
Suns can pretty easily match the salary if they include Bridges (even assuming CP is not on the table).

Looks like the latter, FTO, in my opinion:

Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn ·7m
Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving had no contact with the franchise after Irving opted into his deal on Monday, and a sense of inevitability existed that Durant would eventually ask for a trade, sources tell ESPN. It happened today.

PHX and MIA have leaked as possibilities. Marks says Bam can't be in the trade cause of Designated Rookie Extension rule (teams can only have 1 at a time; Simmons and Bam both are on that extension).
   3524. Mike A Posted: June 30, 2022 at 03:14 PM (#6084799)
Hmmm. Maybe the Hawks should have waited. KD was probably a pipe dream, but it's still nice to dream.

The Hawks had something kinda like a Murray/Trae pairing when Delon Wright/Trae were on the court at the same time. And they worked surprisingly well together. So I'm hoping it works out.

Tea Leaves I know, but:

@SethPartnow 8m - If Brooklyn is trading a first for Royce O’Neale, they aren’t trading Durant for picks so there would have to be another team involved for Miami to be in the running.

Ummm what? Surely protected, but that's difficult given all the other picks they owe.

I think it's at least worth pumping the breaks for a minute to make sure Marks is the guy you want making all these deals.
   3528. jmurph Posted: June 30, 2022 at 03:27 PM (#6084811)
Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn
Phoenix and Miami are among two of the teams that Kevin Durant has on his wish list, sources tell ESPN, but the Nets plan to move Durant where they can get the best possible deal. With four years on his contract, there's no shortage of teams willing to unload assets for Durant.
   3529. sardonic Posted: June 30, 2022 at 03:27 PM (#6084812)
No point in bottoming out without any of their future picks (all traded to Houston for Harden). And yeah, if KD was a real possibility then ATL definitely should have waited to pursue that. Who knows what will happen though or what they might or might not know about KD/Brooklyn's preferences.

Ayton + Bridges + multiple picks feels like a pretty strong package from PHX, and they still have CP3, Booker, KD to build around.

As the Nets prepare to move one of the most valuable trade assets ever on the market, the entire roster will available to discuss in deals, sources tell ESPN. Teams have been calling on Durant, and the Nets will certainly look for a historic return on players and draft picks.
   3533. jmurph Posted: June 30, 2022 at 03:33 PM (#6084818)
Kyrie is able to be traded, right (under the rules, I mean)? There's no weird quasi no trade on the final year opt-in?

   3535. jmurph Posted: June 30, 2022 at 03:46 PM (#6084823)
Feels like it's going to have to be a multi-teamer, there's just too many complications (Ayton, Simmons, Bam, etc.) in the various contracts.

Or Toronto just does it again, who knows.
   3536. Mike A Posted: June 30, 2022 at 03:52 PM (#6084824)
And yeah, if KD was a real possibility then ATL definitely should have waited to pursue that.
There was some talk the Hawks put the Murray deal on hold while they inquired about KD.

So my guess is either KD was against coming to ATL and/or the Nets were asking for the moon and stars (which they will probably get).

Can't help but find a little joy when a superteam fails. The poor Nets have botched it twice in the past decade.

Woj trying to stay on the good side of the Nets. But, no, that's just not how that works. Good luck getting him to play in Orlando if they make the best trade offer.

Man Chris Paul is 37 and is coming off, eyeballing it, maybe the healthiest 3 year stretch he's ever had? I don't think I'd be willing to place my Finals hopes on that continuing if I were Durant?

The other issue is with four years left on his deal teams may just not care much what he wants? It will be interesting if a team he doesn't want to go to would be willing to test him.

Also lol @ giving up a 1st for Royce regardless of team situation. I saw it's whichever of the HOU/BKN/PHI pick is worst next year so basically the PHI pick, but he's been bad enough the last season + at least previous playoffs that I thought his contract was negative value at this point.
   3542. sardonic Posted: June 30, 2022 at 03:56 PM (#6084830)
Yeah, from the Lowe Post, Toronto could do Scottie Barnes + Gary Trent Jr. + picks, which he felt might be too much, but feels too light to me. Is that really better than Mikal Bridges + Ayton + picks? Does Boston ante up and throw in Jaylen Brown?

Given the stakes involved could we see this saga extend into the season? Given KD's contract status I don't think other teams could call Brooklyn's bluff on that one. I'd wait all year to get the best deal I could if I was Marks. I think a team hoping to get KD and contend probably needs to get to best and final offer pretty fast in this process.

It's not Brooklyn's problem if KD doesn't play in Orlando. Now, maybe the Magic don't make the best offer for precisely that reason — but that's not Brooklyn turning down the best offer. It seems likely to me that Brooklyn does, in fact, plan to take the best offer, regardless of the team that it comes from.

I'm not trying to state the opposite, but the best offer they get will likely come from a team he's ok going to, as has been the case in every one of these trades except the Kawhi one, which somehow worked out perfectly for everyone. Maybe we'd think of things differently had the Raps lost to the Sixers though.

since he's sure to be the fa on the tips of all lips: the rockets let trevelin queen be a ufa. i've liked queen since he was at nm state and still do - though the odds of him become a rotation guy are kind of slim.

the dream with him coming out of school was his three and d potential. the d is solid - his long arms and quick feet annoy opposing twos and some ones (he's a bit slight at 6-6 190 to stick on many threes) and he made the all defense team in the g league this year. the surprise, from my perspective, was how he turned up his usage - averaging over 20 a game with half of his shots from three (where he was only so-so, shooting around 35% across minor league games this year). he also is a solid rebounder and passer for a two (those aren't surprises), though his ballhandling needs work. put it all together and he was the g league mvp and spent time on the rockets where his usage rate in garbage time stayed high.

i think he can be a taller, poor man's de'anthony melton and would definitely consider him for a deep bench development spot, even though he's already 25.

Now that the NBA has broken the punishment for tampering seal, shouldn't that mean the Knicks lose a pick here? Initially he was also going to meet with the Heat and Mavs today, but both meetings already cancelled. I'd love to know what smoking gun there was last year for the Bulls/Heat because I can't imagine the same one doesn't exist here.

Some of it isn't his fault because nobody with his talent should have been asked to guard the best opposing player, but at the same time his court awareness and effort level was dog #### the last year+ on top of not being good enough. Kind of wonder if he was hiding/playing through an injury but haven't heard anything about offseason treatment.

Thad Young stays in TOR 2/16 (that 16 I think includes incentives)
Queen deal is 2/3.3 with over 300k of that guaranteed [pedantry: i think this is in error and should be 2/3.47 with the current cap]

Seems like Milwaukee is running it back plus Ingles? Ok, I guess, I would have wanted a bit more youth/athleticism on the wing, like JTA.

not too late for jta?
more i think about him, the more i like him for a contending team as a cog to throw into the wing mix. the playmaking is unusual for that player type.

I didn't expect it, but someone should have made a compelling offer to Boucher. Teams wants guys who can play the four in the regular season and the five in a postseason small ball lineup. He can do this (he struggled at the four initially but has improved and even did well when guarding smaller players on switches and what not). Consistently posts good off/on numbers. Good rim runner. Outside shooting is very streaky but good enough to be worth the risk.

Like Moses and Eric Koreen, I don't understand what statmuse is trying to do.

Bagley stays in DET for 3/37. Mills stays in BKN for 2/14.5, Tate in HOU for 3/22.1

I'd be excited for JTA on the Bucks but they're almost out of roster spots already.

I'm with you spivey. Running it back is pretty underwhelming, even though I do think they had as good a shot as anybody to win this year if Khris doesn't slip.

So, the Nuggets signed DeAndre Jordan today. My first impression was confusion, as there are many available backup centers who are not toast. My second impression is that Jordan was the third of the three free agents the Nets signed three years ago and they have hopes of bringing Durant in to pair up with Jokić.

A return would have to include a couple of Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon, and Michael Porter Jr., along with picks.* If the Kroenkes were willing to pay, they could have an amazing offense.

*If they want to get Kyrie as part of the package, then all three make the salaries work. It remains to be seen if a team would willingly take on the Kyrie experience for the honor of having Durant play for them.

Lonnie Walker IV, just let out of his QO by the Spurs, goes to the Lakers for 1/6.5m (that's the MLE)

He has been really, REALLY bad in terms of +/- stuff but looks like a ball player and is still young so??
I guess he's like the Malik Monk experiment only with a guy who has been less successful (but maybe has the physical tools to be more versatile).

They also signed Troy Brown II for the minimum. (supposedly, he and Walker are best friends, fwiw)

Not only should Denver do that, it might be one of the better options for Brooklyn? I don't think Ayton is a good pairing with Simmons (and I think, if you're Brooklyn, you have to hold out hope that Simmons will finally play and reach at least some of his potential), plus he'll likely be overpaid. If I was running the Nets I'd want young shooting/scoring talent to put around Simmons. (If you can get a bona fide young star who doesn't fit that mold, OK, but I don't see Ayton in that category. Asking for Booker makes sense, but I assume Phoenix says no.)

Also, a Durant-Jokic pairing would be fun. Durant can do what he wants, of course, but it'd be nice to see him choose a fun place for him to go for a change.

Bobby Marks just said well you pay Bradley Beal because if it doesn't work out you can flip him down the road. He wasn't any good last year! He's pushing 30! This could be a disaster down the line. I'M TAKING CRAZY PILLS.

3583: and the Denver dream dies. Alas. I mean, I guess Brooklyn can trade Simmons, but what are you getting for him at this point? Maybe Denver can trade those guys elsewhere and route the return to Brooklyn, but that's a bit complicated...

ehhhhhh........
Keith Pompey @PompeyOnSixers
P.J. Tucker is expected to join the #Sixers. Here’s how they can absorb his salary inquirer.com/sixers/sixers-… via @phillyinquirer
Austin Krell @NBAKrell
Assume starting salary of $9m for Tucker ($27m guaranteed over 3 years) with 5% annual raises (standard for NTMLE):

2022-23: $9m
2023-24: $9.45m
2024-25: $9.9m

Total: $28,350,000

If incentives get it up to $30m, *guessing* that might look like clauses for reaching the Finals.

just a friendly reminder before i go out and chug another half gallon of anti-freeze: pj tucker is 37 years old.

My question on the rookie extension rule is what might it mean if, say, the Nets traded Durant and Simmons to the Nuggets and got a package back including Murray and Porter? In that case, Simmons is gone, but now the Nets have taken back two guys on such deals. Is that permitted? If not, Brooklyn's options grow a lot less attractive.

since he's sure to be the fa on the tips of all lips: the rockets let trevelin queen be a ufa. i've liked queen since he was at nm state and still do - though the odds of him become a rotation guy are kind of slim.

I like how every Der-K post about an obscure player basically goes, "I love Malachi Periwinkle. He's one of my favorite people in the world. He's the godfather to my children and I officiated his wedding. I'd give him a max contract if I could. He might be a solid 11th man on a rebuilding roster."

As best I can tell, the rule applies specifically to players acquired in trade (which is also why Denver can have two of them right now — Porter and Murray).

That Beal deal is expected but yeah it's hard to win with $50M allocated like that.

Bamba for 2/21 seems pretty reasonable for ORL to bring him back and I'd have done that in our mock offseason for sure. I thought he'd get more. Not that many bigs who shoot 38% on a 3 every 6 minutes (even if that is likely above his true talent), with rim protection, and he's still only 24.

I like this for Minnesota.
Adrian Wojnarowski
@wojespn Free agent Kyle Anderson has agreed to a deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves, sources tell ESPN.

Gobert and Simmons on the same team would be....quite an offense.
