ESPN:
The NBA has launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Philadelphia 76ers star James Harden's public admonishment of the franchise's President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey, sources told ESPN.
The league office is believed to be pursuing an understanding of whether Harden was portending a 2023-2024 hold out in violation of the league's collective bargaining agreement -- or had been referencing past contract discussions with the organization that might constitute salary cap circumvention, sources said.
the league office has made a point of persecuting daryl morey ever since his (very tame) comments about taiwan blew up the NBA's chinese media rights deals.

I haven't been watching much of the FIBA warmups outside of highlight clips. It sounds like Edwards has been great. Any insights from people who have been following?
I have not followed, but Steve Kerr has been gushing about Ant.
“He’s unquestionably ‘the guy,’” coach Steve Kerr said. “I mean … he knows it, but now the team knows it and I think the fans see it. But we see it in practice every day. He genuinely believes he’s the best player in the gym every single night. And he’s such a dynamic young player, but I think he’s taking a leap.”
Last week, I listened to the Game Theory pod simulate an expansion draft (pretty thoughtfully, for the most part - often people’s fake expansion drafts are pretty ignorant of real world considerations <ahem, down to dunk>)… until one guy drafted Garuba off of OKC. Garuba was waived today.
(Not a knock on Spinella liking Garuba - I like him too - just that it looked pretty unlikely that he wouldn’t even be on OKC by then, go get a more valuable commodity like I.Joe)

I was thinking that Garuba would be an excellent fit for the Warriors, and when I looked up his stats on BB-ref there's a blog post saying he'd be perfect for the Lakers linked on the page. There's probably about 15 teams who should be champing at the bit to add him to the end of their roster ... maybe one will put in the waiver claim ... odd that nobody was willing to toss a 2nd rounder to OKC to lock in the deal.
Homeslice was dumb enough to send propriety IP from his work email to his personal gmail. This is like the dumber version of the Luhnow thing from a few years ago with the Astros and Cards.
Also, imagine being so desperate for help as a first time coach that you steal from the Knicks.
Edit: after reading the suit, there's like 0% chance this Raptors coach keeps his job.

I've always been curious, where is the line between "fine" and "tampering" for a national team coach who is also the coach of an NBA team?

Not sure if any of you guys play Poeltl. I usually guess Anthony Edwards first, just because. There were no matches with him today except light yellow on the guard position, so I figured it had to be a fairly tall player in the East who is older than 22. THE EXACTLY SAME THING JUST HAPPENED ON MLB PICKLE. I started with Ryan Jeffers and was able to discern that it was a left-handed non-catcher in the AL West or East and then nailed it based on that information.

The NBA announced Tuesday that it has fined 76ers star James Harden $100,000 after his recent comments which in part referred to franchise president Daryl Morey as a "liar."
The league last week launched an inquiry into the circumstances around Harden's comments on Aug. 14 and 17, which the NBA said indicated "he would not perform the services called for under his player contract unless traded to another team."
The investigation found that the comments stemmed from Harden's belief that the team would not accommodate his trade request, the NBA said in a statement. An interview with Harden was part of the investigation.

All I know is fans of most teams should never enjoy their players or any team success. They are purely feeder teams. That is why bo midwestern team other than Chicago has ever won a title or even made the finals.

All of the Anthony Edwards talk has sort of obscured the fact that Banchero is the clear best player on the team so far and Reaves has been the second best.
The Athletic reporting from the Twilight Zone (or parts unknown, I’m not sure which):
Brooklyn Nets guard Ben Simmons, in an interview with
Marc Spears of Andscape, said
he would be open to playing again for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Here’s what you need to know:
Simmons said Philadelphia is his preferred destination if ever traded,
calling the city “a second home to me.”

Is this about the podcast today with the Pistons guy?
It's not just The Athletic, some of the ESPN team guys have been this way for years.

Pretty unimpressive performance from the US this morning, though some of it was bad shooting. Edwards is very good but there seems to be too many possessions where he just has to dribble a lot and get to the rim.
Other team having an outlier 3p shooting game against the US is whatever. It happens. I have no idea about the shooting on Lithuania, but I'm sure some of those guys are good shooters.
Giving up 18 offensive rebounds? In a game where you only got 18 defensive boards, meaning the opponent had a 50% offensive rebound rate? That's disgraceful.

When I posted, Lithuania was 9/9 on 3 point shooting which isn't just an outlier performance. Lithuania came back to earth, but that's part of what got Team USA in the big hole.
Interesting trend from the Korean Basketball League where a number of players are 80%+ from the free throw line shooting exclusively bank shots. pic.twitter.com/OBKmVW3pfa

David Duke had agreed to an Exhibit 10 contract with the Sixers, according to a league source. He played in 45 games for the Nets over the past two seasons.
there's a fun name to look forward to seeing on my timeline for the next two months. ugh.
Cooper is so, so good.
---
Wood to the Lakers for the minimum. I get why people aren't high on him but -- he's a top 40 player by box DPM* (cherry picked metric to make him sound better than he is), he can help most teams.
Duke - yeah, I know he's got that whole Michael Bolton "he should change HIS name" sort of thing and that he's a junior and all that but ... I'd go by a nickname.
Canada and Slovenia are tied 50-50 at the half. Canada getting to the rim with ease (started 12/15 inside the arc) while Slovenia is bombing away from long distance (10/17 from 3).
Germany narrowly held off Latvia 81-79, with Dennis Schroder ALMOST hero-balling Germany right out of the tournament (4/26 from the field).
I still find it a bit hard to believe that none of the teams with cap space gave Austin Reaves an offer sheet, unless he just didn't express interest in leaving the Lakers. Even if you're mostly sure the Lakers would match, it's not like those teams were able to do much with their money otherwise, and there's a competitive benefit from making the Lakers spend more to retain him. It also conceivably builds up a bit of goodwill with agents/players to help a player get paid when he otherwise couldn't.
I really, really don't understand David Duke the basketball player's name.
He was born in 1999, well after the infamous Duke went full Nazi. He's black, so I'm gonna assume his parents aren't white nationalists. But the kicker to me is ... he's a Jr.. Didn't his dad for sure get teased about his name in the years leading up to his birth? And he named him that anyway? I guess it's the referenced Michael Bolton defiance, but that seems like an awfully mean thing to do to your kid.

Parents are Liberian. How much did they know about that David Duke when they moved to Providence and had a child?
It remains a mystery to me about who gets paid and who doesn't in the nba. Wood seems like a pretty good stretch big. Sure, he appears to have some defensive shortcomings but it seems surprising to me that he signs for a fraction of what he was most recently paid. He got a bigger contract after being somewhat of a mystery and then got a tiny contract after essentially doing what people would have hoped from him.
It's a nice deal for the Lakers although I'm not sure how they are going to sort out their playing time issues. It's not that hard to imagine a scenario where he's a big part of their plans but it's also not that hard to imagine a situation where he warms the bench during a potential playoff run.

This is a terrible defensive lineup for the US late in the 3rd.
No matter the outcome, Germany is just better than Team USA. USA is only in this game due to going 23/24 at the FT line and 50% from 3.
Straight up embarrassing to be handily outplayed by Isaac Bonga. Giving up 12 offensive boards because you can't keep Daniel Theis and *Johannes Voigtmann* off the glass.

I care basically zero, and I'm not really sure why. It's kind of fun to watch non US games, but the US games always feel like low stakes exhibitions.
Pretty much everyone would, I assume, rather win an NBA title than this thing, which shows both in terms of who's not playing and how the people who are playing approach it. Like if you win (as the US), it's expected, no real juice.

speaking for myself, it depends on how the eagles look going into the season, on whether the phillies are in the playoff hunt, and on how many sixers are currently being hospitalized for leprosy.

I found this Brian Windhorst recap quite amusing, as he paints Team USA as plucky underdogs who naturally came up short against an imposing German juggernaut.
A few tidbits:
The U.S. played a spirited and aggressive game. The team was just too small, and it showed up repeatedly, just as it did against Lithuania last weekend in the previous loss.
And that was not survivable.
The U.S. cut the lead to one in the final two minutes with a valiant comeback try after Germany got up by as much as 12. But a 3-pointer by Andreas Obst held off the American charge.
Under the correct circumstances, Team USA can and did win with this alignment. But one of those factors has to be an aggressive and fast-break-generating defense.
But the margin for error was not feasible. Even with an extremely favorable draw that gave it travel and opponent advantages, there was just too much size to mitigate.
I didn't watch the game, but from what I have read and looking at the box score, where the heck were the forwards? Paolo Banchero(2), Mikal Bridges (2), and Jaren Jackson Jr (3) had fewer rebounds than Ant Edwards (8), and by all accounts, their defense was basically nonexistent.
They only lost by 2, so it was hardly a blowout, so maybe a few more boards and a bit more defense from the big guys and we have a different story.

Kind of funny we're at a place where the american big men are less physical than european big men, given the conventional wisdom when the european stars first started hitting the NBA.
It's easy- and true- to point out that this wasn't anywhere near the best talent available to the US, but Germany is non-NBA guys, some rotation NBA guys, and Franz, who wasn't even their best player. So it's still pretty inexcusable to go out.
The rest of you? Thank you for your time on Team USA.

If we get to see anything near a full strength Team USA at the Olympics, to me only Halliburton, Edwards, and maybe Bridges would have an argument for being included based on current merit. But we have another season to see what Banchero, Jackson, Reaves, Brunson, and others do.
As has come up in other contexts in this thread, a lot of the best players in the league are old, relatively speaking, so it's hard to know if they'll be interested in another run. Some others are... complicated (can't imagine Ja or Kyrie getting the invite).
Obviously, the team disappointed, but the major issue was the front court. The guards were good enough to win. For the Olympics, I would expect upgrades everywhere, but age is the real issue as jmurph says. That said, I don't care much about international basketball - even the Olympics - so I am fine with whatever.

Well, right on time:
Shams Charania @ShamsCharania
Sources: LeBron James wants to represent Team USA at 2024 Paris Olympics and is spearheading group of future Hall of Famers – including Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant – prepared to commit.

James has spoken to Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Jayson Tatum and Draymond Green, and they are all prepared to commit as well. Separately, Phoenix’s Devin Booker, Portland’s Damian Lillard, Sacramento’s De’Aaron Fox and Dallas’ Kyrie Irving also have serious interest in committing, league sources said.
James’ effort started well before the USA World Cup team, led by Anthony Edwards and Mikal Bridges, lost at the World Cup and was not related to whether this summer’s team won or lost. While the American national team has struggled at the last two World Cups, the program has won four consecutive golds at the Olympics.
LeBron, even as old man LeBron, would never let this punking on the offensive glass happen.
As we get 20 years in, I appreciate more and more the way that LeBron approaches the game mentally. I used to be critical of that part of his game, and his refusal to go into the post, but 2011 really changed his game for the better.

Also I think LeBron's career would have been shortened by a move to the post, and I think he understands that. Now, does he need to take fewer 30' shots (or get a little better at them...)

In my final LeBron stanning for, I agree that he would have helped immensely on the defensive glass. Another thing that impresses me is the ability to spend his limited energy where it is most needed. He can still, IMO, be an excellent defender when he chooses, but if he is, he'll be gassed on the offensive end. I have no doubt he could have excelled as a rebounder in that game, at the cost of other areas of play
