The playing of LCS baseball has commenced. Huzzah!

Snell delivers, and that pitch is BELTED. Back to the wall, and Altuve has the Astros on the board!
The first home run of the game is brought to you by Miller Lite.

Rays going with 14 pitchers this series.

Hoping to emulate the Red Sox and go through NY, Houston and eventually LA to win it all. A tough road for sure.

Huh, does the 13-pitcher roster limit not apply in the playoffs or was this a Covid concession?
   5. Walt Davis Posted: October 11, 2020 at 08:41 PM (#5982439)
Not related but no other thread to stick it in ... been thinking about projections for next year. Leaving the fancy models aside, the good ol' Marcel projections usually do well enough for our purposes. The weights there are generally 5/3/2 for the last 3 seasons. Of course we didn't have a real season, we had a 40% season. So a simple thing to do is to weight the last 3 seasons 2/3/2 which I thought intrestingly comes out to that 2019 will have the biggest impact and a 2020 breakout/collapse would have the same influence as 2018. Of course nobody wants to divide by 7, so a reasonable approximation this time is to just weight them equally.

Javy Baez endorses this proposal.

No idea, I just read it in the blurb at MLB.com about the 14 pitchers/14 position players is how they lined it up.

Oh, 28-man rosters ... don't know why I assumed they'd be down to 26.
   8. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 11, 2020 at 09:38 PM (#5982460)
Tampa going small ball. 1BB, 2 groundouts with runner advancing both times, single...run scores. Up 2-1
   9. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 11, 2020 at 09:45 PM (#5982462)
Rays going to another of their 14 pitchers, Snell already done at 105 pitches after 5.
   10. Snowboy Posted: October 11, 2020 at 09:48 PM (#5982463)
Astros loaded the bases in 4th on 2 hits and 2 walks, Snell somehow didn't allow a run.
All batters in the 5th went full count.
Fortunate to get that far with Snell. Lucky having no one up in the bullpen didn't bite Cash in the ass.

Zunino: described by the same pbp in this game as "a light-hitting catcher" and "a power-hitting catcher"
Perhaps the second reference was a makeup for the error of the first, but come on, you're paid handsomely to describe baseball.
Try to get the words right.
   17. Walt Davis Posted: October 11, 2020 at 10:37 PM (#5982484)
Maybe he meant the first one as in "not particularly productive hitter." Probably not but I don't know a short phrase for "power hitter that never hits the ball and doesn't walk all that much either."

On a language note, I wonder how long it will take for baseball to shift from "hitter" being roughly synonymous with "high BA." Pretty sure back in my day, a hitter with BAs over the last 3 years of 201/165/147 would be referred to as a "light hitter" not that any team would have been silly enough to write that guy into the lineup. (Not quite true on that last one.)

Frenchy: "Even tho he's struggling, he's got a chance to blow this thing wide open right here."
Brandon Lowe couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a bazooka right now.
Sorry, I don't care what he hit last month.
   19. Snowboy Posted: October 11, 2020 at 10:43 PM (#5982486)
Walt, we know what "light-hitting catcher" means. If he had said "low batting average hitting catcher" that would pass muster. But "light-hitting" is not Mike Zunino. (But I get your point.)
   20. Snowboy Posted: October 11, 2020 at 10:45 PM (#5982487)
Update: Lowe struck out swinging, missed the ball by three feet.

This is ####### insanity. How can MLB not care about fixing this?
   24. Snowboy Posted: October 11, 2020 at 10:54 PM (#5982494)
Maybe, Elroy. The "light hitting catcher" comment was said going to commercial, he might have had one foot out the door, already being fed his next read in. I don't take it back, but I'm willing to not make it a capital issue.

They do, if by “fix it” you mean “use it to generate in-game ad revenue.”

Q: Does the pitcher have to face three batters or be on the field for three batters?
   28. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 11, 2020 at 11:04 PM (#5982500)
As in, could you bring in a new pitcher after two batters if you put the previous pitcher in the outfield? I don’t think so.

Martin Maldonado wakes up every morning, looks in the mirror, and says “Yep. I want my hair to look like that.” Imagine that.
   30. Walt Davis Posted: October 11, 2020 at 11:08 PM (#5982502)
But if he dies, they are not required to leave his body on the field for the third batter. :-)
   31. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 11, 2020 at 11:11 PM (#5982503)
If it’s an at-bat like this one, he’d be mostly decomposed by the end anyway.
   32. Walt Davis Posted: October 11, 2020 at 11:12 PM (#5982505)
If I was Martin Maldonado, I'd wake up every morning, look in the mirror and say "I've got $14.5 M in career earnings for squatting behind the plate for 60 games a year." Then I'd struggle to come up with a way to spend $1,000 that day although bad hair would be far down my list.

Fair point, Walt, although his peroxide bill must be fairly substantial.

Yeah, when Castillo is on he’s dominating. All right - one game closer to getting rid of the Astros.
   37. Howie Menckel Posted: October 11, 2020 at 11:35 PM (#5982517)
that's one

so which four Astros hitters ideally would be the ones to whiff for the final outs of each loss?

Altuve, check.
   38. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 11, 2020 at 11:52 PM (#5982520)
Bregman, Correa, and probably Springer?
   39. Howie Menckel Posted: October 12, 2020 at 12:03 AM (#5982522)
that was my top-of-the-head guess, but I defer to the wisdom of crowds

Correa has to be the finale. bonus points if he whiffs on a pitch in the dirt in a tie game and the ball rolls to the backstop - but he doesn't bother to try to run it out, thereby infuriating some of his teammates so thus leading to an internecine brawl that leads, oh so ironically, to lengthy suspensions for all to start next season.

Well, as long as y'all are wishing, how about Altuve and their next 4 2B all get hurt and the Astros deperately sign (nearly) 45-yo Alex Cora as a replacement then he can K on the final PA.

Well, as long as y'all are wishing, how about Altuve and their next 4 2B all get hurt and the Astros deperately sign (nearly) 45-yo Alex Cora as a replacement then he can K on the final PA.
Nah, let's go for a more realistic scenario - we'll have to play the long game here...

After Dusty's contract is up, the Astros rehire Cora and make it back to Game 7 of the World Series (against the Dodgers, natch). It's tied in the bottom of the 9th, and Cora goes out to the mound to make a pitching change. We have an effective Covid vaccine by then, so Dodger Stadium is sold out, and at least half of the fans are still there, what with it being tied in the bottom of the 9th in Game 7 of the World Series.

So Cora is on the mound, and he's signaling for whatever anonymous reliever they have in 2022. Unbeknownst to him, hours earlier the Dodger Stadium clubhouse attendant poured a whole bottle of Super Colon Blow into the Astros' Gatorade cooler. This causes Cora to have a bout of explosive diarrhea on the mound. The reliever then gives up a Series-winning homer to Bellinger, and also suffers explosive diarrhea as he watches the ball leave the yard. As Bellinger rounds the bases, the Super Colon Blow also kicks in for Gurriel (they picked up his 2022 option after a slight bounceback in 2021), Altuve, Correa and Bregman in sequence. The Astros trudge off the field in defeat, and also covered in their own ####.

Bregman with a crushing DP at bags loaded in the 9th, down 4-1.
loaded again with 2 outs at 4-2 - and Brantley flies out.

let's give them one more close loss - and then an absolute shitshow in the finale, like the 1985 WS or 2004 ALCS.

   59. Walt Davis Posted: October 12, 2020 at 08:49 PM (#5982708)
Haven't seen it here yet ... Tommy Pham stabbed. He's doing fine apparently, no major organs hit or anything. Story to this point is he came out of a bar and two strangers arguing by his car, he asked them to move on ...
   60. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 12, 2020 at 08:55 PM (#5982710)
That’s terrible. Hopefully Pham will be fine.

Kind of odd, though - seems like the demographic of “dudes who are violent enough to attack a stranger outside a bar, but only carry a knife rather than a gun” is drastically smaller these days.

So, mask wearing in the stands appears optional.

[58] Pache was on the roster for the Division Series and the LCS - the Braves dropped Ender Inciarte and Johan Camargo. He had only 4 ABs during the regular season. The Braves also have rookie pitchers Bryse Wilson and Huascar Ynoa on the LCS roster.

Small sample size and all, but Gonsolin might have been the Dodgers' best starter this year - 8 Starts, 2.31 ERA, 2.29 FIP, 0.836 WHIP, 46K/7BB, in 46.2 IP, just 2 HR allowed.

I was just reading back through the FanGraphs game chatter from last night, and they were talking about Charlie Culberson coming up to bat in a late-game situation. I wonder if the Braves could have told Swanson to put on Culberson's jersey and sent him up instead? Or back when the A's had Jose and Ozzie Canseco, why didn't they play them both and send Jose up to bat twice? Put Ozzie at DH so he doesn't even have to take the field. They could have just said Ozzie had been working in the cage to adopt Jose's stance because it was working so well for him.
   81. salvomania Posted: October 13, 2020 at 04:11 PM (#5982834)
I wonder if the Braves could have told Swanson to put on Culberson's jersey and sent him up instead?

I think they would have, except for that Swanson was already on base (8th inning, two out, bases loaded) and it would have looked suspicious if they had pinch-run for him.
   82. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 13, 2020 at 05:04 PM (#5982840)
Easy enough to get around - Swanson gets something in his eye, trainer comes out, they have to go wash it out in the clubhouse. Culberson and Swanson switch jerseys and Culberson is the runner.

Even easier -- make Culbertson the trainer or third base coach! Then have the Peanuts kids go out there and wave their arms in front of them while they switch spots.

A favorite really bad baseball joke, told about the Cincinnati Reds third basemen of the late '20s and early '30s.
