21 steps toward fantasy baseball auction success – The Athletic

Some good tips about auctions. One additional step I like to take is to figure out the value of all players as if the league was starting from scratch. I consider this figure a player’s true value, rather than his auction value. Then, using a tiering system similar to the one mentioned in the article, I watch out for players going closer to their true value. I never exceed my listed auction value.

PREPPING FOR YOUR AUCTION

Use a Spreadsheet To Set Up Your Team

Set up a cheat-sheet spreadsheet in order of your dollar value rankings at each position. On the far left, have spaces set up for the players you’ve picked, with a formula set up to show how much money you have available to spend out of your $260 budget, and what your max bid is for one player. That’s calculated by subtracting $1 from your total available salary dollars for every open roster spot, and then adding $1. In other words, if you had $13 left and five open roster spots, then your max bid would be $9 = ($13-$5) + $1.

That’s math, bro!

Create Different Tiers At Each Position

Make tiers for each position: Superstars, good fantasy starters, average starters, good backups, and bad backups. Then try to get a player from the highest tiers for the least money. Getting the cheapest player in each tier means you likely got the best value.
