3-HR night for Vlad Jr? Even dad never did it!

The first act of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s breakout season officially has its trademark moment.

Guerrero launched three home runs against the Nationals on Tuesday night in Dunedin, Fla., single-handedly carrying the Blue Jays to a 9-5 win with the biggest night of his Major League career. The young star got it started in the third inning when he stepped in with the bases loaded against Max Scherzer for a battle of best on best.

Down three, a steep hill to climb against Scherzer, Guerrero launched the go-ahead grand slam deep over the left-field wall, turning on a hanging slider before holding his finish for a moment to admire his work.

Guerrero was tending to some family business, too. Last season, Scherzer struck out Guerrero just over a decade after he first struck out his father for the first time, becoming one of just nine pitchers to strike out both Guerrero’s. The grand slam put Scherzer on a shorter list, though, and one he doesn’t want to be on. Eleven years and four days ago, Guerrero Sr. launched a two-run shot off a 25-year-old Scherzer, who now joins Iván Nova as the only two pitchers to be taken deep by both father and son.

I guess he really is in the best shape of his career.

.360/.484/.693 with more walks (16) than strikeouts (13) so far this season.

Yeah, it's early, but he really does look like a completely different hitter now. He doesn't seem to be chasing as much as he did last season.

#2 yeah his K rate is slightly down, walk rate is way up and HR rate has doubled. That last one is only true because he hit 3 HR yesterday but still it’s a great start.

Right now the top 2 hitters in MLB, by OPS+, are following the tradition of Vladimir Guerrero, Hall of Famer. One wears his number on an Angels uniform, the other his name and number on a Blue Jays uniform.

It feels weird to notice that when Mike Trout made his major league debut, Vlad Jr. was only 12 years old.
   7. Snowboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 03:07 PM (#6015876) last night declared Vlad Jr. has inserted himself onto the following list, when his first HR was a GS.
Youngest age with 3 grand slams, in AL history:

Tony Conigliaro (20)
A-Rod (20)
Mantle (21)
Griffey Jr (21)
Ted Williams (21)
Vlad Jr (22)

Last night's hot take. Sorry if it's considered gauche to quote oneself.

Vlad's 3HR 7RBI game are not team records, except for being so young.
Carlos Delgado had a 4 HR game.
Roy Howell had a 9 RBI game in the first season of the franchise, 1977.
And Edwin Encarnacion had a 3 HR, 9 RBI game in 2015. Oh that was a moment. The fans delayed the game and were flooding the field with hats "hat trick!" "hat trick!" and it had to explained later to Edwin in the dugout what a "hat trick" meant to Canadians. (Hint: hockey)

But Vladdy Jr. should always remember that two of his tonight came off Max Scherzer. That guy is money. And when he threw that 1-1 pitch that Vladdy laid off in the third, with the bases loaded, he did the patented pitcher "rubs his brow, what am I gonna do with this guy" move.

If Vladdy Jr. had been in Rogers Centre tonight, instead of stuck in Dunedin because of covid, he would have been showered in ballcaps. Tonight would have been a night to remember. Instead, due to covid etc, the stadium response was muted.

This parade needs a little rain! :-) Great start but the 364 BABIP and the 17% BB rate are probably not sustainable. Which is hardly damning criticism, just means he's probably not a true 1200 OPS hitter. Or he's the next Bonds which is possible.
