5 outs short of no-no, Strider (13 K’s) still makes history

Capable of doing something incredible every time he steps on the mound, Spencer Strider celebrated his grandmother’s 90th birthday in dominant fashion. His bid for perfection fell short, but his performance only heightened his status as one of the game’s elite starters.

Strider recorded a season-high 13 strikeouts and helped the Braves snap a four-game losing streak with an 11-0 win over the Marlins on Monday night at Truist Park. The right-hander proved perfect through the first six innings and lost his no-hit bid with one out in the eighth inning…

Though he fell short with his no-hit bid, Strider became the first Braves pitcher to record at least nine strikeouts in nine consecutive starts. John Smoltz is the only other pitcher in franchise history to do so over eight straight starts.

Strider also is the seventh MLB pitcher to record at least nine strikeouts over nine or more starts. Nolan Ryan set the record in 1977 with 11 consecutive such starts.

For as much brilliant pitching as the Braves have trotted out over the last few decades, their last no-hitter was thrown by Kent Mercker in 1994.

(Spencer Strider is c)apable of doing something incredible every time he steps on the mound

I'm capable of doing something incredible every time I step out the door. (I don't usually, tho.)

5'11, only really throws two pitches, and he's still the best pitcher in the league. That fastball really is something - it plays up above its velocity, and its already at 98mph.

He is thrilling to watch. Career K rate of 38%, that's elite closer territory (Chapman, Kimbrel, Diaz had an unreal 50% last year and is 40% career). By contrast, the best Kershaw season was 33.8%, Randy Johnson's was 37.4%

Strider is quickly becoming a favorite. In addition to everything mentioned above, he's even got a cool name. Plus I appreciate the few throwbacks left who have the confidence to rock a standalone 1980's pornstache! (Strider, Cease, Matt Carpenter, Nester Cortes)
