8th? BBTF Central Park Softball Game: SEPT 18, 2021

Let’s start planning for this year’s game. First questions:

1. Who is submitting the permit request? (Answer: Hysterical & Useless)

2. What dates should we aim for? (Answer: July 25 October 3 Saturday, September 18, 2021)

3. Where is the post-game destination?

I’ll try to keep the header up to date as actions are taken and decisions are made.

Um... Is this game happening? I'm noting that some of these are maybes, so the actual number is probably low. I'd love to play, and I'd like to hang out with everyone, but if it's just hanging out with everyone... No offense, but I'm not traveling down for that.
   202. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: September 15, 2021 at 04:12 PM (#6039844)
Yeah, this seems unlikely to actually happen.
   203. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: September 15, 2021 at 04:13 PM (#6039845)
Well, I’m in the city anyway so I am down for playing or just drinking or whatever.
   204. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: September 15, 2021 at 05:23 PM (#6039856)
If anyone is interested I would also be up for going to a game that night. Both the Yankees and Mets are at home this weekend. Mets tickets probably easier to get at this point in the season.
   205. LuisD Posted: September 15, 2021 at 09:51 PM (#6039897)
So it's safe to assume it's not happening??? There's always next year.

the "Once Upon A Time in Queens" series on ESPN this week has revived some of my 1986 Mets memories to where I can now weave a tighter tale of what it was like to be young and a Mets fan. some curious coincidences that all came together....

if nothing else, we need a quorum to make Chicago Joe's plane ride worthwhile

:)
   207. Karl from NY Posted: September 16, 2021 at 11:57 AM (#6039964)
Yeah, this turnout is low enough that it's not worth the travel for me just to hit around or hang out.
   208. villageidiom Posted: September 16, 2021 at 01:49 PM (#6039989)
I'm out. Karl's out, if he was ever actually in. djordan said in May that he'd play if he were available on the chosen date, but hasn't affirmed anything since. So y'all are down to a half dozen at best for playing, and that plus a few more for hanging out.
   209. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: September 16, 2021 at 03:49 PM (#6040002)

Who would still be up for getting lunch / drinks even if we don’t have enough for a game?
   210. Howie Menckel Posted: September 16, 2021 at 06:38 PM (#6040021)
I wasn't going to be playing anyway and I have set aside the afternoon, so sure.

plus Chicago Joe alone is well worth the price of (free) admission....
   211. sunday silence (again) Posted: September 16, 2021 at 07:08 PM (#6040024)
Im still in for whatever.
   212. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: September 17, 2021 at 11:53 AM (#6040095)

OK, so it sounds like we have 4-6 people, at least one of whom is only available to coach. Sounds like we should just plan to meet up for lunch/drinks.

Given that, I'd propose meeting up around 12:30-1 pm, but I'm flexible if people want to meet earlier. Does Jake's Dilemma (81st and Amsterdam) work? We've gone there after softball before, and I'm pretty sure they have outdoor seating if people don't feel comfortable inside. We can always go somewhere else from there.
   213. Howie Menckel Posted: September 17, 2021 at 02:53 PM (#6040134)
sure, Jake's Dilemman is not mine - I can be there at 12:30 pm in patriotic red (shirt), white (me), and blue (shorts). or anytime. haven't been back in Manhattan since Feb. 29, 2020 - I'm due!
   214. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: September 17, 2021 at 07:56 PM (#6040186)
Ok let’s plan for Jake’s at 12:30 pm. Will someone let Chicago Joe know?
   215. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: September 18, 2021 at 09:50 AM (#6040255)
I’m going to head out shortly to run some errands and then will head over to the bar. Who else is coming besides me and Howie? snapper, sunday silence, H&U, djordan?

And has someone let Chicago Joe know the details?
   216. Howie Menckel Posted: September 18, 2021 at 10:00 AM (#6040258)
Chicago Joe always finds a way....
   217. sunday silence (again) Posted: September 18, 2021 at 12:11 PM (#6040267)
not gonna get there. Hope everyone has a good time
   218. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: September 18, 2021 at 12:53 PM (#6040273)
There’s four of us drinking at Jake’s Dilemma for anyone else who was on the fence. If your idea of a good time is listening to old men tell war stories of their mundane injuries, this is the place to be!
   219. Ron J Posted: September 18, 2021 at 01:10 PM (#6040274)
Sorry, I was contemplating coming down but it really wasn't in the cards.
   220. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 18, 2021 at 01:39 PM (#6040280)
There’s four of us drinking at Jake’s Dilemma . . .
So, just stickball?
   221. Hysterical & Useless Posted: September 19, 2021 at 08:04 AM (#6040388)
Thanks to Dave & Howie for showing up (which is, I'm told, 90% of life) and to Chicago Joe for actually coming to the ball field to fetch me, who, as usual, was totally out of the loop on the abrupt change of plans.

Truly a shame this fizzled, as we had probably the nicest day we'll see for the rest of this year--sunny, high temp in the low 80s, low humidity, and plenty of promenaders in the park who would've found our exertions highly entertaining I'm sure. I bet Jake's would've appreciated it if CJ could've run a larger tab as well. The poor guy can only drink so much on his own!
   222. Jose Canusee Posted: September 19, 2021 at 08:37 AM (#6040389)
I played some pickleball Saturday morning and was wondering what I was missing. Where I live senior league softball starts at age 60 so I haven't played an actual game in years, but where I am working in FL there is a 45+ and a 55+ league. I decided to sign up for the latter to continue my pursuit of Minnie Minoso. Maybe one of these years I will make it to NY at the right time of year.
   223. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: September 19, 2021 at 10:12 AM (#6040393)
Thanks to those who came out yesterday. I was impressed with Chicago Joe’s ability to throw back pint after pint of Guinness, but I guess listening to three Met fans for a few hours will drive anyone to excessive drinking.

Hopefully next year in more normal times we’ll be able to revive the actual game.
   224. Howie Menckel Posted: September 19, 2021 at 12:19 PM (#6040401)
CJ sets the gold standard, but was proud to claim silver yesterday after sharing that honor with Shooty in 2019. that 35-block walk in between libations also helped me loosen a few gears, it feels like.

gracias to H & U for setting things up - and to NGAI Dave, for finding us a watering hole with a waitress who is a lookalike for a lissome Game of Thrones actress.
   225. catomi01 Posted: September 20, 2021 at 01:56 PM (#6040532)
Sorry to have missed this, but my joints and back are semi-relieved...we ended up playing 7 games yesterday including a best 2 out of 3 championship where all 3 games were decided by 1 run and an 11-inning game 2 sandwiched in the middle.

Hopefully we can get back to this next summer.
   226. Hysterical & Useless Posted: September 21, 2021 at 05:39 PM (#6040773)
Hopefully we can get back to this next summer.

Who wants to start the permit application process?

I feel as if there is a key fact missing here....

I haven't had coffee yet today, but I'm missing what I'm missing?
   230. Karl from NY Posted: September 22, 2021 at 03:14 PM (#6041012)
They're asking if you won, though I kinda like the unresolved suspense...
   231. catomi01 Posted: September 22, 2021 at 04:05 PM (#6041051)
Gotcha...to maintain the suspense, Karl, stop listening.

We won the championship (2 of them actually).
   232. Howie Menckel Posted: September 22, 2021 at 05:07 PM (#6041084)
that would have been a great Seinfeld character, a la the low-talker, close-talker, braless wonder, etc.

character would offer all the details of intriguing tales - except the result.

so he tells of meeting a famous starlet, they hit it off, and have a few drinks. end of story.

lively party starts to go south as tempers flare, then someone pulls out a knife. end of story.

3-hour interview for the dream job of a lifetime, and it seems to go well. end of story.

:)

We had 7 games including a 2-of-3 championship in which all 3 games were decided by one run, yada yada yada, so how was your day?
   234. catomi01 Posted: September 22, 2021 at 11:06 PM (#6041180)
Ironically one of the top teams in our area is Vandelay Industries.
   235. Howie Menckel Posted: September 22, 2021 at 11:08 PM (#6041181)
importer/exporters, or architects?
   236. catomi01 Posted: September 23, 2021 at 12:48 PM (#6041261)
Something to do with latex is all I know.
