9 HRs, 9 steals. Can Greinke go 10/10?

But when asked which milestone he cares most about during a press conference on Monday, Greinke, maybe unsurprisingly, had an answer that had nothing to do with pitching at all.

“The only milestone I care about is to get 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases,” he said.

Even though Greinke currently sits at nine homers and nine steals, 10 and 10 is a tall order. He’s in the American League, where pitchers rarely bat. He’s made 22 starts since the Astros acquired him in a trade on July 31, 2019, but has only hit in one of them—getting a single in two at-bats against the Brewers in September 2019. He was thrown out trying to steal, the first time in 10 tries he was ever caught trying to swipe a bag. His last successful steal was with the D-backs in 2019.

He also hit three homers in 48 at-bats for Arizona that season, including two in one game. That’s one homer per 16 at-bats. That’s pretty outstanding for a pitcher.

Greinke is 37 and needs over 300 K's to make 3000, so another 2+ years. He's a junkballer so could last another 3 years and that 3000K club is mighty impressive.
Baseball is a better place with Greinke in it.

I'm a huge Greinke fan, but I was a little surprised to see that his HOF case, by WAR standards, was such a slam dunk already. He's at 72.2 bWAR now, slightly ahead of Justin Verlander and Derek Jeter, and just behind Pud Galvin and Jim Thome. Among pitchers, he's also ahead of lots of non-controversial HOF selections like Jim Palmer, Bob Feller, Carl Hubbell, Roy Halladay, and Juan Marichal.

Every eligible pitcher with 70 or more career bWAR is in the Hall of Fame except for Roger Clemens (139.2), Curt Schilling (79.5), and Jim McCormick (76.2), whose career ended in 1887.

What's interesting to me is that Greinke gets about 7% of his WAR from his offense (and defense, I guess), despite spending almost half of his career in the American League (only 28 total PA in about 8 season-equivalents in the AL). His WAR from pitching, while still HOF caliber, is "only" 67.1, which puts him in more of a gray area with non-HOFers like Kevin Brown, Rick Reuschel, and Luis Tiant. But he's one of the best-hitting pitchers of his era, as well as a six-time Gold Glover.

1, have to agree with you.

Baseball is all the better for having a guy like Greinke, who with his quirks (he's pretty clearly OCD and he may well also be on the Autism Spectrum, if only mildly. Reminds me a lot of my son, which was diagnosed as PDD-NOS under the old criteria), his raw talente and now his absolute moxy, make it a ton of fun to watch him pitch.

I also have a son who is/was very mildly on the spectrum, and it is great to see Greinke have the success that he has after his quirks nearly drove him from the game.

2 - WAR loves him, and obviously he'll get lower support than that figure indicates, but I think that he's not going to have any real trouble getting in. He's continued pitching well through his mid 30s, and has turned himself into a pretty interesting guy. Maybe he'll take a few years on the ballot, and few voters are going to compare him to Carl Hubbell, but I'm comfortable predicting that he'll get in without any real drama.

something like 29% of his career pitching WAR is due to two seasons. He then has a number of 4s and 5s. So, a traditional voter will see the two great seasons and a bunch of good ones and may be less inclined to vote for him right away. I think he will get in fairly easily though. I mean, he's not done yet. If he can put up 3 more average or better seasons he will be around 3500 ip and 250 wins and over 3000k. Adding that to his career, even if it isn't a ton of WAR won't hurt.

Greinke is 9 of 10 in steals. Way better than Gibson's 13 of 23.

Odom had a shot at 10-10, but was only 6 of 11 in steals.

Adam wainwright is batting .199 and now he may have a window to climb above .200 before they rip the bat out of his hands next year. He has made it clear he doesn’t want to end up below the Mendoza line.
