The Rays made an aggressive move Monday afternoon to add another talented arm to their rotation, acquiring right-hander Aaron Civale from the Guardians for highly touted first-base prospect Kyle Manzardo. Manzardo, 23, is ranked by MLB Pipeline as the No. 37 prospect in the game.

1. The Duke Posted: July 31, 2023 at 06:01 PM (#6137778)But ya gotta trust these two teams. If there's one things the Guardians are great at, it's knowing the exact minimum needed to compete in the ALC. And Civale has never made it through a full season (career high 21 starts) and that 2.50 ERA is a run below his FIP with a mediocre K rate. So i assume they've decided losing 2 months of Civale won't hurt their chances much. The Rays of course also know what they're doing so I assume they did not just trade the next Freddie Freeman (but maybe the next Nate Lowe).
The Guardians continue to churn out passable pitchers-they have three rookie starters in their rotation right now who have a combined 3.41 ERA. But they perennially need help on offense. Naylor has played well, so maybe they can just slide Manzardo in at DH, especially since they also moved Josh Bell.
But that's all of that sentence that needs to be said. I get that they have significant flaws, they needed the kind of bat this kid could develop into, and they sold high on a guy that most of the fanbase was quite unhappy that he pitched at all in the 2022 postseason. But no one asks how you made the playoffs, just if you did. This team is perpetually planning for three years down the road. The chances seem incredibly high that as soon as Manzardo becomes a key piece to the org, like Civale has become, they'll be looking to trade him for someone who can help another three years further down the road. At some point you have to stop competing for the fewest $ spent per WAR belt and start competing for the real prize.
