Aaron’s death prompts call to change name: Braves to Hammers

Social media buzzed with calls to change the moniker to match Aaron’s nickname. There was even a fledgling online petition backing the idea.

“The renaming serves two important purposes: 1) It honors an icon who represented our city with grace and dignity for more than half a century, and 2) It removes the stain on the city of having a team name that dishonors Native and Indigenous people, especially given one of the greatest tragedies in American History, the Trail of Tears, began in the region the team calls home,” the petition said.

The Braves have steadfastly resisted calls to change their name, saying they view it as a tribute to Native Americans rather than a slur.

But the team did take steps during the 2019 playoffs to downplay symbols of its nickname after St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Ryan Helsley — a member of the Cherokee Nation — said he found the team’s “Tomahawk Chop” chant offensive.

Aaron's life should have prompted the change to Hammers. Aaron's death should prompt suggestions of the Atlanta Corpses or the Atlanta Rot.

This could be a nice money maker. They can start selling foam hammers and instead of that racist chant they can have everyone in the stadium sing If I Had a Hammer.

Nice, then we'd be guaranteed they'd often in a rally situation play 'hammer time'. Would be great for crowds. Picturing people moving sideways saying 'can't touch this' in the 9th as the closer comes out.

Go with “Divine Hammer” by the Breeders. “If I Had a Hammer” wouldn’t work because everyone already WOULD have a hammer.

“If I Had a Hammer” wouldn’t work because everyone already WOULD have a hammer.

purely a matter of choreography.

at whatever point in the game the Brav - er, Hammers - are rallying and a reliever is summoned, everybody in the crowd stands up - sans hammers, tucked under the seats - and starts singing.

then one section raises their hammers, then another. back to the refrain, and the spotlight goes to a remaining section that doesn't have their hammers raised yet. if only they had a hammer.

as the song closes, everybody, yes, has a hammer.

this could turn that dreadful, joyless, monotone Braves warpath chant on its ear - a fun, joyful, mellifluous performance.

I've been to a few Super Bowls where they prep the crowd on stuff like pre-game or halftime flipping of cards simultaneously to show whatever message.

people tend to like to play along with a group effort, and I think that visually it's been realized that the small number of 'scofflaws' (many of whom are on a line for the rest room or beer or a hot dog) aren't large enough to detractor from the visual.

I like the idea. But I also would have named Washington’s team the Greys. As a bonus, they wouldn’t have red baseball hats in the nation’s capital, when 60% of the country wouldn’t be caught dead in a red baseball hat.

Yep, from 1954 to 1958, which coincidentally covered from the year of Joe McCarthy's censure to the year after Joe McCarthy's much-welcomed death.

Similar to the first thought I had reading this article- change the name from “Tomahawk Chop” to “Hamer Time” and the chant to “Haaaammmer, Haaaammmmer”....keep the tradition by rebranding it.

Wait, people are actually foregoing the wearing of a baseball cap representing their favorite team on the off chance that some stranger on the street quickly glances at a red hat and mistakes it for MAGA apparel?

That seems a bit...paranoid? Hypersensitive? Not sure what the right word is, but it sure seems unhealthy.

Concur. I have coached youth baseball for eleven years now and the team I coach is the Braves. A few years back I got rid of all my t-shirts and sweatshirts with the tomahawk. I was no longer comfortable with it.

I don't either, but it seems to encourage things like the Chop and people dressing up in headdresses.

The team can put a stop to this. For example the Red Sox no longer allow “Yankees Suck” t-shirts into Fenway. The Braves can stop playing the rhythm that initiates the chop from the crowd and security can start removing people who show up dressed like this.

26 - yup. Look around when you’re in public, red hat wearing is way down.

——

I first heard this idea a few years ago and liked it then and now.
1) while I judge team names on a spectrum and Braves is assuredly less bad than was, say, Redskins, it’s unnecessary. Drop it.
2) This team has changed names several times before (though not since the mid-30s) and can do so again - who cares about a joke about a former team owner in another city’s politics?
3) Hank Aaron’s 755th homer is, imo, one of the two most important sports events in the city’s history - and the characteristics we associate with Aaron are almost entirely noble. Make em the Hammers and I’m gonna load up on merch.

They should absolutely change the name. It's not the highest priority in baseball or anything, but it's a bad name and they should change it. Hammers would certainly be a nice change. I would absolutely buy a shirt if they did it.

It's not "some stranger on the street," it's nearly everyone on the street. I can't tell if they're looking approvingly or disapprovingly because nearly everyone I see has a mask on, but I don't enjoy the extra attention. Like it or not, red hats are political propaganda right now.

Better would be "John Henry", substituting "Bad Henry" for "John Henry" with suitable lyrics to follow.

Interesting thought, but "Bad Henry" might be better sung during a rain delay.....

Bad Henry was a little baby, sitting on the his papa's knee
He picked up a hammer and little piece of steel
Said "Hammer's gonna be the death of me, Lord, Lord
Hammer's gonna be the death of me"

The captain said to Bad Henry
"Gonna bring that steam drill 'round
Gonna bring that sterm drill out on the job
Gonna whop that steel on down, Lord, Lord
Gonna whop that steel on down"

Bad Henry told his captain
"A man ain't nothing but a man
But before I let your steam drill beat me down
I'd die with a hammer in my hand, Lord, Lord
I'd die with a hammer in my hand"

Bad Henry said to his shaker
"Shaker, why don't you sing?
I'm throwin' thirty pounds from my hips on down
Just listen to that cold steel ring, Lord, Lord
Just listen to that cold steel ring"

Bad Henry said to his shaker
"Shaker, you'd better pray
'Cause if I miss that little piece of steel
Tomorrow be your buryin' day, Lord, Lord
Tomorrow be your buryin' day"

The shaker said to Bad Henry
"I think this mountain's cavin' in!"
Bad Henry said to his shaker, "Man
That ain't nothin' but my hammer suckin' wind! Lord, Lord
That ain't nothin' but my hammer suckin' wind!"

Now the man that invented the steam drill
Thought he was mighty fine
But Bad Henry made fifteen feet
The steam drill only made nine, Lord, Lord
The steam drill only made nine

Bad Henry hammered in the mountains
His hammer was striking fire
But he worked so hard, he broke his poor heart
He laid down his hammer and he died, Lord, Lord
He laid down his hammer and he died

Bad Henry had a little woman
Her name was Polly Ann
Bad Henry took sick and went to his bed
Polly Ann drove steel like a man, Lord, Lord
Polly Ann drove steel like a man

Bad Henry had a little baby
You could hold him in the palm of your hand
The last words I heard that poor boy say
"My daddy was a steel driving man, Lord, Lord
My daddy was a steel driving man"

They took Bad Henry to the graveyard
And they buried him in the sand
And every locomotive comes a-roaring by
Says "There lies a steel-driving man, Lord, Lord
There lies a steel-driving man"

Well every Monday morning
When the bluebirds begin to sing
You can hear Bad Henry a mile or more
You can hear Bad Henry's hammer ring, Lord, Lord
You can hear Bad Henry's hammer ring

Like it or not, red hats are political propaganda right now.
Which reminds me of last summer, when Gold Wife was looking to add a dog to our household...

She was interested in Keeshonds, which look lovely (if quite furry). Then I read this about the breed:
The Keeshond was named after the 18th-century Dutch Patriot, Cornelis (Kees) de Gyselaer (spelled 'Gijzelaar' in Modern Dutch), leader of the rebellion against the House of Orange. The dog became the rebels' symbol; and, when the House of Orange returned to power, this breed almost disappeared.

i think it would be super cool if atlanta changed the team name to hammers. and they should design the hammer in the logo to look like the one thor carried around in the old marvel comics, not some stupid claw hammer you could pick up at ace or whatever.

all kinds of wild logo design opportunities there.
   46. The Yankee Clapper Posted: January 25, 2021 at 01:10 PM (#6001632)
Why not the Hammertown Braves? “Braves” has been associated with the franchise for more than 100 years, across 3 locations & more stadiums than one can readily keep track of, but what’s so special about “Atlanta“? Certainly the locals wouldn’t prefer to continue paying homage to a railroad depot rather than honoring Henry Aaron?

Right, because if there's anything baseball needs right now, it's the insertion into its stadiums of crappy, fuddy-duddy, lefty folk songs from the early 1960s.

It seems unhealthy because those people being perpetually in that hyped-up state is indeed emotionally unhealthy. Hopefully, the fever will finally break with the departure of Big Orange but OTOH there's a lot of money to be made in keeping people that way -- so probably not. I mean, not being able to tell the difference between a Nationals hat and a MAGA hat -- or worse, pretending there is no difference -- is batshit insane, but again there's a lot of money in hyping people up to batshit insanity.
