Add an intriguing team to the Jacob deGrom mix

To this point, the Mets, Yankees and Rangers are the only teams known to have had contact with free agent starting pitcher Jacob deGrom. Now we can add a surprising fourth team to the list.

According to league sources, the Tampa Bay Rays—true to their policy of practicing due diligence on every big free agent, even if they don’t end up as a match—have spoken with deGrom’s camp.

In addition to Tampa, league sources said that several other teams had talked to deGrom. His market does appear solid.

There is virtually zero chance that the Rays will be the high bidder on deGrom. At this point, it’s hard to see anyone offering deGrom more than the Mets will. But the Rays’ policy is to check in to make sure that free agents don’t have priorities other than money.

One league source compared this situation to the Rays’ pursuit last winter of free agent first baseman Freddie Freeman, when they emphasized to Freeman the quality of life and the lack of state income tax in Florida.

and the thing the Rays need least is starting pitching, with Glasnow, McClanahan, Rasmussen and Springs already lined up. Yeah, pitchers get hurt, but if that's a concern, DeGrom is maybe not the insurance policy you need. Don't get me wrong, I'd take him, of course, but there are other places I'd spend the money first.

There were rumors the Rays were in on Abreu, and are interested in Nimmo and Sean Murphy. Wonder if they'll actually spend this year or they're just going through the motions to say "see fans, we're trying! Build us a stadium!"

If you don't ask the answer is always no. If you do ask, the answer is probably still no, but is, every once in a while, yes. If it costs you almost nothing to ask, you just ask.

About deGrom?

All joking aside, Zach Eflin appears to round out the Rays rotation for next season.

DeGrom has signed with the Rangers.

$185M/5 years to the Rangers. Surprised the Mets let him get away, but that’s a lot of money for an oft-injured pitcher heading into his age-35 season.

Wow. That’s a lot of money. Full NTC too (and a conditional option).

Now we're talking hot stove!

I didn't think he'd get $40m/year but I never expected 5 years.

I wonder if some teams are mostly ignoring health track record four pitchers and going based on their medicals.

Good luck to him but I’m completely fine with the Mets not matching that deal. deGrom has a real Pedro post-2006 vibe to me right now. Maybe I’ll be wrong, but the fact that Jake struggled to be anything more than a 5 IP/start pitcher in his return didn’t fill me with a lot of confidence.

Hope the Mets feel like they did the right thing, not pushing him down the stretch so he could ultimately finish his career elsewhere. Personally drove me crazy. I get that Jake didn’t owe the Mets anything and has to look out for himself but that should work both ways.

Well if you want to be sure to get two seasons from him five years gives you three pitching years and two surgeries, or 2 and 3 if you're a pessimist.

I'll miss rooting for him. Great player and seemed like a great guy.
