Adding Dozier gives Padres infield options

PEORIA, Ariz.—The Padres added a veteran and a reigning World Series champ to their wide-open second-base race on Sunday.

Brian Dozier agreed to a Minor League deal with San Diego, which includes an invitation to Major League Spring Training. The 32-year-old righty hitter is expected to join the club on Monday, once he completes his physical.

“He’s been to the World Series the last two years in a row,” said Padres manager Jayce Tingler. “He’s got a really good track record, a very good resume. He’s played on a lot of winning teams, especially the last couple years. We’re excited to get around him.”

Dozier, who is entering his ninth season in the big leagues, batted .238/.340/.430 with 20 homers and 20 doubles for the Nationals last season. He’s had plenty of success against left-handed pitching, posting a .900 OPS last season and a career mark of .855.

Things you learn when investigating nothing transactions:

1. Dozier had a better year with the bat than I realized -- nothing special but a solid 95 OPS+
2. He was barely used in the playoffs
3. His nickname is "Doz" though no indication of whether that's "Dozh" or Doze" ... probably the former but count us lucky it's not Dozey.
4. There was a Buzz Dozier in MLB, presumably a fun name on Aug 31

Brian Dozier is only entering his ninth season? He seems to have become an anonymous journeyman as soon as he finally reached free agency, after being a star beforehand.

That shocked me too. Debuted at 25, one year after Mike Trout.

Dozier makes a living pulling HR to LF. Petco doesn't seem much worse than his last few home fields.

The main thing he brought to the Nats last year was his energetic performances of Calma in various states of undress that became a bit of an anthem for the team

then there was DJ Dozier who managed to be a bust in two pro sports

Greg Holland and Derek Holland are both on minor league contracts right now. Make it happen, Padres!

For his career, pulling the ball he has hit 421 with a 885 SLG with 271 XBH and 229 singles. Can't be many GBs in that so the shift will only help a bit. Pull-heavy and FB-heavy but a bwlow-average K-rate ... I suspect that he was ahead of the curve in being a "launch angle hitter" and some of his "decline" is the rest of the league catching up. But his career-shape is also classic late-bloomer.

Second basemen, in general, age like milk left in a hot car once they turn 30. Them and catchers.
