Agent Scott Boras to honor Kobe Bryant’s wish with internship for Lexi, daughter of late John Altobe

Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka, during his eulogy Monday for longtime client and friend Kobe Bryant and goddaughter Gianna, said Kobe had texted him from the helicopter that ultimately crashed in a tragic accident that took nine lives.

Three of those victims were Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli, his wife Keri and daughter Alyssa Altobelli, who was a teammate and close friend of Gianna.

The purpose of those texts between Bryant and Pelinka that fateful Sunday morning actually revolved around securing an internship for the Altobellis’ other daughter – Lexi – at a baseball agency in southern California. Bryant vouched for her work ethic and character.

“Kobe’s last human act was heroic,” Pelinka said. “He wanted to use his platform to bless and shape a young girl’s future.”

Only a hero would text a friend to help another friend's kid get a job.

Regardless of everything else, it was nice of Boras to agree to do this.

If I wasn't classy, I would say Scott Boras was impressed by how far the girl is willing to go to get into the sports agent business.

Except, yeah, some of us have seen and understood Parasite which said quite a lot about this kind of thing ... and I'll go with Parasite.

And at some point in the kind of strange cultural lionization afoot, it doesn't become "too early" to mention the rather repellent sexual assault Kobe almost certainly committed ... right?

A rich guy flying a ####### helicopter to a junior sporting event texting another rich guy to get a job for a third rich guy's kid.

A true hero.

While I agree with your sentiment, I don't think the community college baseball coach can reasonably considered rich by typical American standard.

The Kobe thing is basically Princess Di in its excess.

OK, so that is terrifically funny.

What I didn't get about this Kobe tragedy was the coverage of it just seemed way over the top. The lionisation of Kobe as a player and person seemed way out of kilter for me. As someone who grew up watching Laker basketball in the late 70's and throughout the 80's, I found some of the statements about his legacy to be insanely over the top. There's a credible argument that he's only at best the 4th greatest player in Laker history (and that's not even considering stints from Shaq or Lebron) sitting comfortably behind Magic, Wilt and Jabbar.

Then there's the issue of the sexual assault case in which he admits to banging this 19 year old girl even though he was married at the time.
