AL West race: September 7, 2011

TEX 81-63 [4-3 in SEPT]
LAA 78-65 [5-2 in SEPT] (2.5 GB)

MLB.com: Rangers fall despite Kinsler’s homers

But despite Ian Kinsler making things interesting when he hit his second solo homer of the game in the ninth inning off Rays closer Kyle Farnsworth to give the Rangers life, Mark Lowe could not keep Desmond Jennings from ending things, as the rookie outfielder hit a walk-off homer in the 10th on the first pitch he saw to give Texas a 5-4 loss.

MLB.com: [Maicer] Izturis’ late double sparks comeback victory

For seven innings, Charlie Furbush was doing a pretty decent Felix Hernandez impersonation from the left side. But then came the eighth, and the Angels rallied in support of a brilliant Jerome Williams to claim a 3-1 victory at Angel Stadium.
...
Williams, making an amazing career revival at 29 after not starting a Major League game for four years, left after eight innings having yielded just one hit.

I was almost positive Williams was going to throw a one-hitter and lose. Thank the Big Cheese in the Sky that that didn't happen.

Speaking of which, at Double-A Frisco tonight Robbie Ross went six innings, gave up one hit and struck out 12...and took the loss.

This race is playing hell on my emotions.

The good news for Ranger fans is that Texas has the brutal part of its schedule behind it now. www.coolstandings.com has Texas with an 86% chance of beating LAA for the division.

Texas has nobody over .500 left on their sked. LAA has 3 against the Yanks.

To their credit, they made trades to stregnthen it at the deadline. One worked (Mike Adams, 1.65 ERA in 17 G) and one didn't (Uehara, 4.97 ERA in 15 G) but they saw a way to improve the team (the pen was already pretty good) and enhanced it.
