Alabama has decided to fire baseball coach Brad Bohannon, less than three days after an ESPN report raised questions about “suspicious wagering activity” surrounding Alabama baseball games that led to Ohio, New Jersey and Pennsylvania halting all bets on the team’s games.
“Alabama director of athletics Greg Byrne announced he has initiated the termination process for head baseball coach Brad Bohannon for, among other things, violating the standards, duties, and responsibilities expected of University employees,” the university said in a statement Thursday morning. “Bohannon has been relieved of all duties and Jason Jackson will serve as the interim head coach. There will be no further comment at this time pending an ongoing review.”

1. Der-K's no Kliph Nesteroff. Posted: May 04, 2023 at 01:04 PM (#6126865)Man how hard core do you have to be to wager on over/under runs on college baseball? Just betting on baseball per se, you have to ask yourself : Why?
. Oh hell is the derby in two days?
In soccer, some of the most egregious recent scandals have involved wagering on lower division teams, sometimes even semi-pro teams. Lots easier to fix, less general scrutiny.
Tennis has had several low level tournament scandals in the last few years. This will only get worse.

The legalization of such betting makes it far easier to detect it. These imbeciles could have scammed an illegal offshore operator and gotten away with it. What is the illegal book going to do, complain to the Attorney General's office?
Every legal book has a "bull #### detector" that sets off alarms when unusually high bets are proposed by gamblers not known to them already. They typically just drastically downsize the amount of the bet permitted, but this story shows that they do far more than that.
heh:
"The bets in question were placed Friday at the BetMGM sports book at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, ESPN reported Tuesday. The Cincinnati Reds were on a road trip in Oakland, California at the time."
So, both ballparks were empty.
Showtime had a good doc about professional gamblers, one guy was a total fraud (a guy that made money selling his picks), but another seemed to really know what he was doing. His advice was to avoid the high profile games and be an expert in Akron vs. Ball State, because if you know a ton about those teams like that, you can beat the line over a long period of time.
Yeah but the illegal offshore operator isn't buying up loads of ad time, sponsoring drop-in ad reads, or "partnering" with sports leagues to the point where their gambling content is inescapable on sports broadcasts.
Be an expert in Akron vs. Ball State, because if you know a ton about those teams like that, you...
... lead a sad pathetic life.
yes, I know several professional gamblers. they are a very rare breed, and don't tend to advertise themselves - as opposed to the fraudsters. the amount of discipline and research required is immense.
one of them gently chastised me because I make my minuscule wagers (maximum 10 bucks) off the backs of the hundreds of dollars of free money offered by many sportsbooks at signups. he insists that you're not a gambler unless you are risking your OWN money.
ok, I'm not a gambler, then, lol.
and yes, your odds improve if you are more knowledgeable about a sport than the oddsmaker. almost impossible to achieve in a major sport.
And the whereabouts of Pete Rose at the time?
srsly i am so beyond shocked SHOCKED!!!!
i nevah NEVAH would have thought that turning baseball into another gambling game might could lead to actual CHEATING far FAR worse than any roids/speed/HGH. and gambling scandals in college
but of course MLB MUST be immune because all the players/managers/coaches are so well paid that couldn't none of them be partial to a much larger pay day, no siree nope
and minor leaguers are immune from any temptation just like they was from drugs/roids/HGH
but let them sweet sweet gambling dollars embiggen the pockets of the billionaire owners because what could happen?
