Alex Bregman: ‘I want to be the LeBron James of baseball’

There are few similarities between baseball and basketball players. NBA players are actually encouraged to show off their personalities. They do fun things like hold All-Star drafts, wear wacky clothing and call each other out on Twitter constantly.

Major League Baseball players act as though they are prohibited from showing any emotion on the field. If you flip a bat or cheer after hitting a home run, expect a fastball to the ribs. The next time a baseball player wears an outfit that gets people talking will be the first.

Houston Astros infielder Alex Bregman is looking to change that. He told Joon Lee of Bleacher Report that he wants to be “the LeBron James of baseball.”

A grandstanding narcissist who shakes down team owners the way team owners shake down cities?

Huh?

LeBron James:
Is the greatest NBA player ever.
Gives away millions of dollars to help under-privileged kids.
Speaks out constantly about social injustice.

Where is the grandstanding (he's apologized for The Decision - Dan Gilbert never apologized for trashing James for leaving the Cavs)? Where is the grandstanding? Where is the "shake down"?

Bregman probably won't be as good as James, but he could emulate him off the field and he'd be remembered as a truly great person.

Yeah, this seems like a real cheap shot.

QLE also took a bizarre shot at Ryan Howard in a thread yesterday. What's up, QLE?

I knew Repoz, and QLE, whoever you are, you're no Repoz.

James has far more good than bad in the ledger but I do find the way he’s engineered his team to team moves to be a bit unsatisfying. There was an “if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em” feel to the Heat move that soured me.

Ahh, cut QLE some slack. He provides a lot of topics. I've been meaning to thank him for awhile, so I'll do it now that he's taking some guff.

But QLE, a very wise man (Johnny Mercer) once said, "Don't mess with Mr. In-Between"

Link includes Jo Stafford trying to jolly up Patti Page about losing the Dodgers to the West Coast.

Yes, Jo Stafford...talking baseball.

I think Morty's pants just got a little happier...even if they were happy already, they're a little happier yet.

What bothered you about the other moves?

There was an “if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em” feel to the Heat move that soured me.
Oh, it wasn't a "feel"; James was explicit that he felt the only way to beat the Celtics was to play with better players than Cleveland had.

But geez -
The 2nd best player (by VORP) on the 09-10 team that lost in the NBA finals was Anderson Varejao
The 2nd best player on the 08-09 team that lost in the conference finals was Mo Williams
The 2nd best player on the 07-08 team that lost in the conference semis was 32 year old Zydrunas Ilgauskas
The 2nd best player on the 06-07 team that lost in the NBA finals was also Ilgauskas
The 2nd best player on the 05-06 team that lost in the conference semis was also Ilguaskas

Unless you follow the NBA pretty closely, you've never heard of any of these three guys - unless you lived in Cleveland at the time, where Ilgauskas was a fan favorite and minor celebrity.

If Bregman's playing performance can even approach the level of Lebron James, then I'm all for it!

And not to beat a dead horse, but "LeBron James is a hero for our time" according to Kareem.

James is one of the good guys.

On the field, baseball already has a LeBron James, and his name is Mike Trout.
   13. Darren Posted: February 23, 2019 at 12:58 PM (#5817583)
Trout and James have similar nerdy tendencies too. Not sure about the charity, etc.

As long as it doesn't include signing with the Dodgers, go for it, Alex.

I invite QLE to the NBA Thread. He can consider it an opportunity for dialogue and education. Heh. Also, the 09-10 Cavs, the last team James was on in Cleveland before he formed The Heatles in Miami, didn't sniff the NBA Finals. They lost in 6 in the Eastern Semis to Boston, in a series in which they had been huge favorites.

As to James the public figure/jock, he blew "The Decision" in 2010, and later owned it. Handles himself well overall, came back to Cleveland and (catching a few breaks against a superior Golden State team) lead the Cavs to the only Cleveland sports title the fans there have experienced since the Lyndon Johnson Administration, the school he built in Akron is awesome, and he is right there with Jordan and Abdul-Jabbar as GOAT between the lines.

Off the field his name is Anthony Rizzo.

Funny, but in the recent Machado thread, people were trashing him for going to San Diego. "If he really cared out winning, he wouldn't have gone to such a bad team."

Takes all kinds I guess.

Ilgauskas was a pretty good player. You could win a championship if he was your third best player. He was also very famous in Lithuania. Mo Williams was average at best. Side Show Bob became a decent player and if he had been the 3rd best they would have been fine.

You are right, he didn't have much in terms of teammates, and they weren't getting better.

Can I be the LeBron James of BBTF? I've got the grandstanding narcissism down pat. How much do you think I can shake Jim down for?
   21. Jose Canusee Posted: February 23, 2019 at 06:20 PM (#5817625)
In the video that popped up in the article where Bregman is trading baseball cards I thought he would trade Rickey for Big Mac straight up since they talked about those guys but he threw in another card for it. Granted, Kerry Wood might not be a big deal but I think he got taken.

I look forward to Alex Bregman being unexpectedly amusing in films as Bill Hader's foil.

I this guy has a better chance to be the LeBron of baseball.
