Alex Rodriguez, Jennifer Lopez Retain JPMorgan to Raise Money for Mets Bid (EXCLUSIVE)

Retired baseball star Alex Rodriguez and his fiancé, recording artist and actor Jennifer Lopez, have retained JPMorgan Chase to raise capital for a possible bid on the New York Mets, people familiar with the matter said.

The superstar couple is working with managing director Eric Menell, the bank’s co-head of North American media investment banking, said the people, who were granted anonymity because the matter is private. Menell didn’t respond to several requests seeking comment.

Representatives for Rodriguez and Lopez did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Wilpon family, which owns the Mets, said in December they were in talks to sell up to 80% of the Major League Baseball team to hedge fund titan Steve Cohen in a deal that valued the club at $2.6 billion. Under terms of that proposed deal, the Wilpons would’ve maintained control of the franchise for five years.

Wondering what it would say that A-Rod running the team Marlins-style would be a step up from current conditions…..

A-Rod? J-Lo? Wilpons? Money? Mets? Something for everyone!

No joke; would be great. Now I'll duck.

This is nothing more than a stalking horse bid.
   4. The Duke Posted: April 21, 2020 at 07:54 AM (#5942576)
There’s something about this that just feels right - I’m all for it. J-Lo can do seventh inning pole dances, A-rod can get big pharma as sponsors. The possibilities are endless

First internet net worth site I found says A-Rod and J-Lo are worth a combined 750 million. They could hold a substantial share of the team, far more than Jeter with the Marlins, though not full control.

Right now it's looking like the Mets might be on deep discount once the full reality of the situation hits - even when MLB starts playing again, are they ever going to let 40,000 fans all in at once? But then if the economic destruction drops team values, A-Rod/J-Lo aren't going to be worth 3/4 of a billion any more either.

If I have to read to these fucking horse puns every fucking day as a result, I'd prefer the Wilpons.
   7. bobm Posted: April 21, 2020 at 09:46 AM (#5942602)
You wouldn't be saddled with these horse puns if the Wilpons were financially stable.

Does our glamor duo ever get referred to collectively as "AJ-LoRod"?

I would gladly take 30 years of Mets/horse puns over another 30 minutes of the Wilpons.

But then, I love the horse puns anyway.

“J-Rod” appears to be the twosome tabloid term.

Game 5 from 1995 was on TV last night and I happened to see young Alex Rodriguez' at-bat.

My god the star power on the premises that night:

Big Unit
Griffey
A-Rod
Boggs
Jeter
Mariano
Edgar Martinez
Mattingly
Strawberry
Cone
(plus Vince Coleman, Jack McDowell, Pettite, Posada, Tony Fernandez etc.)
   27. Darren Posted: April 22, 2020 at 01:43 PM (#5943066)
Every time his name is mentioned it's the same joke, over and over again. Never anything new, never anything original. Never anything that could even make you crack a smile, or even a smirk. No, A-Rod gets mentioned, and it's a barrage of the same old stuff. Just the same posters, once again, beating a dead horse.
   28. Random Transaction Generator Posted: April 22, 2020 at 02:16 PM (#5943081)
Jeter and ARod as the faces of competing teams in the NLE?

That sounds like fun.

The jockeying for position continues, with the Wilpons’ demand to keep SNY seen as a big hurdle:
The Wilpons are still interested in selling the money-losing Mets, but they are still not interested in selling money-making SNY, their regional sports network, sources tell The Post.
. . .
“Selling this team, in this environment, without SNY, does not seem even remotely possible,” a source familiar with the sale said. “Only Steve Cohen was going to go for that, and he was going to do it for twice what anyone will pay now.” . . . Multiple sources confirmed to The Post that the Wilpons have called in all the capital commitments from their minority owners in recent weeks to cover losses.
. . .
J-Rod’s reported money man in the deal is New York biotech investor Wayne Rothbaum, who cuts a rather low profile for a billionaire. Rothbaum, 52, is the CEO of Quogue Capital, a Long Island-based family office that invests primarily in life sciences companies. In 2016 Rothbaum sold a majority interest in Acerta Pharma to industry titan AstraZeneca for $4 billion, of which he could have received roughly $1.4 billion.
Still time for a dark horse purchaser to emerge.

Definitely. I don't think the Wilpons will wait furlong before placing their bets with someone(s) other than J-Rod

   36. Howie Menckel Posted: April 24, 2020 at 02:36 AM (#5943769)
Jeter didn't play in the 95 postseason

we'll make up for it by crediting Tom Seaver - the biggest stud the Mets have ever had - being in uniform for the 1986 World Series but in the Boston Red Sox dugout, though he was not active.

what a way to be ridden off into the sunset, saddled with that disappointment after getting so close to the finish line in another Game 7 WS loss - and not even the chance to make hay with a worthy pitching performance. it's just horse #####

No but he was there in the dugout, palling around with baby Posada.

I don't know if Mariners rookie-league teenager David Arias was able to get a comped ticket.
   39. Pat Rapper's Delight (as quoted on MLB Network) Posted: April 24, 2020 at 11:22 AM (#5943882)
the money-losing Mets,

LOL. I can only imagine what kind of accounting chicanery must be going on for a Major League Baseball team in New York City to be "losing money," although if any ownership group is capable of making a run for the roses it would seem to be the Wilpons.
   40. Hysterical & Useless Posted: April 24, 2020 at 11:26 AM (#5943888)
"Figures can't lie...but liars can figure."

That is and always has been SOP for MLB accounting practices.

Well, at the current situation, the Mets' payment to Bobby Bonilla this year will exceed their entire revenue.

Well, at the current situation, the Mets' payment to Bobby Bonilla this year will exceed their entire revenue.

Bobby should foreclose. He'd be a better owner than the Wilpons.
   43. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 07, 2020 at 05:45 PM (#5948745)
Time to rein it in - A-Rod & J-Lo End Their Pursuit Of The Mets:
According to multiple sources, Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez are no longer interested in buying the Mets. That decision was reached after negotiations with potential partners failed to materialize and it became clear that the Wilpons’ reluctance to part with SNY makes it almost impossible for anyone without many billions of dollars to afford owning the team.
. . .
Ironically, the absence of a season, particularly one featuring games played in empty ballparks, would potentially save the Wilpons money. Nevertheless, the club is still paying off debts and hemorrhaging money without the gate and associated revenue it collects from the standard 81 home games at Citi Field.
. . .
The Post estimates that losses for a half season at Citi Field would be around $150 million, while a second source pegs the amount MLB can pay out per team at closer to $30 million.
Back to the barn.
