deGrom (should still be name honorary starter) and Gausman are both likely to not pitch. I guess Wheeler or one of the Brewers will take the hill for the NL.

People will think German Marquez is a token, but he's been a very fine pitcher for a long time now. It's hard to be a workhorse in Coors, but he's led the NL in starts last year and this year, led in IP last year, is leading in CG this year. Over the past two truncated seasons, he's made 31 starts with a 131 ERA+. And since June 1, he's got a 1.49 ERA, so you know he wasn't cheating before then. He's legit.

As an As fan I'm irritated that they got one player, same as if they were lousy, while mediocre Toronto gets 4 (though this is the fans' fault.) Bassitt would be a deserving all-star, or if it needs to be a reliever Petit or Trivino.

Seems like every bad team has a legit All-Star except Detroit? Gregory Soto is the only one that would qualify for the Mark Redman All-Star team?

Have they announced how the AL is going to handle Shohei Ohtani? He's been named to the team as both a pitcher and a hitter. We know he'll start the game at DH. If they bring him in for an inning at pitcher, would the AL lose the DH for the rest of the game when he gets relieved as a pitcher? If he starts the game at DH, doesn't pitch, and is pinch hit for in a later at bat by Nelson Cruz or whomever, could he re-enter the game as a pitcher in a later inning?

If they're smart, they'll let him DH all game long, and pitch whenever the AL wants to throw him.

So, they'll #### it up.

another 37-loss team, that plays at Citi Field and has the most automatic pitching choice in the NL, didn't get anyone else. just him.

There will be some late additions, mostly due to pitchers having an owie (or worse). Max Scherzer might be the next man up in the National League, assuming someone less worthy isn’t selected to satisfy the every team gets at least 1 player requirement.

You're assuming (a) that the rules for an exhibition game are the same as regular MLB play, and (b) the people in charge aren't imbeciles.

deGrom doesn't plan to pitch, so he'll presumably be replaced by TWalker or Stroman since the Mets have to have one player.

what's so weird is that the NL has SIXTEEN pitchers who qualify for the ERA title so far with an ERA below 3.00 (then Miley 3.05 and the next is 3.35). 3 Mets, 3 Marlins in official top 16

deGrom 0.95 PICKED
Gausman 1.59 PICKED
Woodruff 1.85 PICKED
Wheeler 2.05 PICKED
TRogers 2.10 PICKED
Scherzer 2.10
Peralta 2.23
Buehler 2.31
[Burnes 2.41] PICKED
TWalker 2.44
Bauer 2.59
Stroman 2.60
Musgrove 2.63
Darvish 2.65 PICKED
DeSclafani 2.84
Alcantara 2.96
PLopez 2.97
yada yada yada
Marquez 3.59 (Coors) PICKED

Burnes is barely shy in IP, hence the brackets

the AL has FOUR SP under 3.00, including the toast-ed Tyler Glasnow and the rotting corpse of Gerrit Cole at 2.95 (so will be over 3.00 by the ASG).
that just leaves Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn - just as we all knew it would before the season started

They don't have to have one player if their existing representative has to be replaced. I imagine since they're a first-place team, they would make sure he was replaced by a Met, however.

yes, of course Post 11 is correct.
not only the first sentence, but also the only mildly speculative second sentence.

Seems like every bad team has a legit All-Star except Detroit? Gregory Soto is the only one that would qualify for the Mark Redman All-Star team?

Soto's had a pretty good half-season and his ERA was 2.18 before he blew up on July 4 (3 runs in 0.2 innings) -- not sure if that was before or after the All-Star selection. After that bad game, he's still got a 2.94 ERA and 1.1 bWAR, which is comparable to the other selected AL relievers: Ryan Pressly (1.5), Matt Barnes (1.3), Liam Hendriks (1.0), and Aroldis Chapman (suddenly down to 0.0 after back-to-back-to-back disastrous outings), though of course WAR may not be meaningful for relievers. But, yeah, he's rather anonymous and there are probably a couple dozen AL relievers who have similar or better All-Star cases.

Casey Mize would have been a better choice. His traditional numbers don't jump out at you but he's 6th in the AL in pitcher WAR. The only guy ahead of him who's not an All-Star is John Means, and he's apparently injured. Mize also has some name recognition (not much of that on the Tigers) due to being a #1 overall draft pick and highly ranked prospect.
