I don't feel good complaining about this, but why is an injury replacement starting the game for the NL?
   3. Walt Davis Posted: July 13, 2021 at 06:21 PM (#6028970)
I'm not sure who you're referring to but I don't think there was a lot of choice. About half the NL roster is injury replacement -- the other half is third basemen.
   4. JJ1986 Posted: July 13, 2021 at 06:23 PM (#6028971)
Sorry, I meant Max Scherzer. There were plenty of starting pitchers available who were named to the original roster including Zack Wheeler and hometown German Marquez.
   5. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 13, 2021 at 06:39 PM (#6028972)
Scherzer has the far better career resume. Not the only factor to consider, but not unreasonable to go with it. It’s not like deGrom is getting bounced.

I haven't checked, but I bet the last time the Pirates had two All-Star starters, one of them was Barry Bonds.
   7. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 13, 2021 at 07:50 PM (#6028977)
I always enjoy the player intros more than I think I will.

I kept hoping they wouldn’t really wear those awful uniforms in the game, but deep down I knew they would.

"Those All-Star jerseys are dope. I want one of those instead of one that's of my favorite team," said no one ever.

1992. Andy Van Slyke.

Now he’ll hear Joe Buck’s voice inside his head every time he steps to the plate.

Way to go, German! Give him another inning!
   13. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 13, 2021 at 09:50 PM (#6028987)
Those uniforms are really, truly... uniformy ! I hate it.
   14. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 13, 2021 at 09:54 PM (#6028988)
They should at least wear a chain in their team colors. To distinguish.

Or their teams tattoo.
   15. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 13, 2021 at 10:10 PM (#6028989)
What do you guys call out when a ball is not in the zone ?

A 'no' seems sufficient but I make it more clear generally.
   16. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 13, 2021 at 10:14 PM (#6028990)
Comeon Kris, you suck !
   17. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 13, 2021 at 10:22 PM (#6028991)
Those on-field convos are totally useless. Kris is now a kid again.
   18. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 13, 2021 at 10:54 PM (#6028993)
Kris the Kid !
   19. Doug Jones threw harder than me Posted: July 13, 2021 at 11:24 PM (#6028994)
National league had a chance but Kris Bryant struck out. People were expecting a lot of runs to be scored, but few could make contact. The nicest hit was Frazier's clean line drive. Meanwhile the news is they are going to get rid of the 7-inning double-headers and the extra-extra-innings runner, but "ban the shift". Rob Manfred and Deep Thinker, these two words don't go together.
   20. Walt Davis Posted: July 13, 2021 at 11:31 PM (#6028996)
but few could make contact

Huh? The NL only K'd 3 times. Alas the team that K'd 12 times scored 5 runs.
   21. Doug Jones threw harder than me Posted: July 13, 2021 at 11:55 PM (#6028997)
Huh? The NL only K'd 3 times.

Gosh! I missed that. My bad. I watched off and on for a while, and I just seemed to notice the K's, maybe that was because the AL was K'ing a lot, and Kris Bryant's K, which I watched in dismay. It just felt like it was HR or bust out there, except for the run the NL scored on a passed ball right before Bryant K'd. I have a hard time listening to Joe Buck for some reason. Though I did for some reason enjoy the banter with Tatis, as meaningless as it was, it was kinda fun in a lighthearted way. I think they turned down the volume after he missed that home run, there might have been some FCC-unwelcome phrases in there.
   22. Voodoo Posted: July 14, 2021 at 12:05 AM (#6028998)
Bryant came up again with the bases loaded and scorched a liner that was snagged by some all star I've never heard of and don't remember his name but it was a smooth catch
   23. Rally Posted: July 14, 2021 at 07:23 AM (#6029001)
The guy who made the catch was the Angel pitcher/slugger. Not Ohtani, the other one, Jared Walsh. It was the first time in the majors that he played left field. (He did play a few games in right earlier this year).
   24. TomH Posted: July 14, 2021 at 07:34 AM (#6029003)
Not having watched the game, the first thing that jumped out to me from the boxscore was that NL hitters only struck out 3 times. So, to those who saw it; did the NL hit a bunch of "at em" balls and come up empty, unluckily.... or was it a whole buncha cheap contact?
   25. bunyon Posted: July 14, 2021 at 08:14 AM (#6029008)
A little of both. It definitely wasn’t all cheap contact but it wasn’t not all cheap contact.
   26. Hank Gillette Posted: July 14, 2021 at 05:55 PM (#6029103)
I’ll bet that if a network asked Bob Gibson to wear a wire while he was pitching, he would have kicked their ass.

The All-Star game has always been an exhibition, but FOX has turned it into a travesty.

   27. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 14, 2021 at 09:40 PM (#6029126)
Another year of poor TV ratings:
An average of 8.237 million Americans watched the annual American League-National League matchup on FOX this year, compared to 8.162 million in 2019, the network said (the league cancelled the 2020 All-Star Game due to Covid-19).
. . .
The game’s ratings still fell short of 2018, when a then-record low 8.69 million people reportedly tuned in, and 2017, when more than 9 million people watched.

The All-Star Game’s audience has fallen precipitously for decades: The event consistently attracted over 10 million viewers before 2016, viewership regularly topped 20 million in the early 1990s, and over 36 million Americans watched the game in 1980.
The Joe Buck effect?
   28. bunyon Posted: July 14, 2021 at 09:52 PM (#6029127)
Buck, Fox and trying waaaaaay too hard to be cool. It’s schmaltzy without depth, chaotic without theater. If you’re an old fart traditional baseball fan, it’s a lousy broadcast but it’s still a baseball game so if you’re not a fan, the “entertainment “ isn’t sufficient to draw you in.

I thought miking the guys was good but would have preferred Buck shut up and let them talk. And definitely interrupting a hitter and asking a guy about his teams losing streak sucked some air out of the room.

But baseball is a small slice of the landscape. They’re never getting 36 million again.
