HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN TODAY?!
   2. The Duke Posted: April 06, 2021 at 02:32 PM (#6012036)
Tatis deal looks like a win for Tatis. I bet he goes ahead and has surgery now whereas without the deal he would play on.

Mike Trout is doing good baseball things again. 464-foot homer off Zack Greinke.

When was the last time Scherzer gave up four homers in a game?

Is anyone having problems with MLB.tv in Firefox? I had to switch to Chrome.

You're not alone. Firefox w/ VPN isn't doing it for me for local games this season, either. Infuriating.

Septuagenerian Suzyn Waldman, mainly known for being in the Yankees broadcast booth for decades, sang the National Anthem before tonight's tilt against the Orioles.

she has some Broadway musical experience - and she is a lot better at singing than she is at talking. she said afterwards that she was nervous and didn't know why, as she has sung before games in two World Series among her occasional swings at the song.
   8. phredbird Posted: April 06, 2021 at 07:12 PM (#6012101)

geez, cards playing like little leaguers in the first inning already.

tyler o'neill clanks a ball that he should have caught, then makes a throwing error to arenado while marlins are running all over the bases.

plus two walks in the inning ... mike maddux had to come out and calm down the pitcher.

cripes this is going to be a long season.
   9. phredbird Posted: April 06, 2021 at 07:14 PM (#6012102)

the carcass of matt carpenter is playing second base for the cardinals today.

i like ol' matt, but he sure looks like toast.

now watch him hit a homer.
   10. phredbird Posted: April 06, 2021 at 07:23 PM (#6012108)

nope.
   11. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 07:38 PM (#6012109)
Still think Marte is one of the most underrated players of our generation, he's going to end up joining Kirk Gibson as the best player to never have played in an all star game. (post all star game era)

edit: oops, he did make an all star game, still underrated.
   12. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 07:40 PM (#6012111)
I wasn't willing to pay $80 for pi so I can't do any research, but was curious, as to who had the most war without an all star appearance. (post 1935 of course)
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 07:41 PM (#6012112)
Really, that was a ball, and last inning, edman's was a strike.. both were equally outside of the zone.
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 07:42 PM (#6012114)
Gant has very little control of his pitches right now, it's going to require luck for him to get out of this inning.
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 07:44 PM (#6012116)
okay, that was a good pitch. First time this inning that Gant looked like he knew where the ball was going.
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 07:49 PM (#6012117)
Bases loaded no outs... he gets to a two ball count and ends up with a strikeout. Next batter swings at a meatball and managed to fly out to the shortstop. That changeup was nasty, but the ump didn't go for it. and the fastball strikeout... wow... that was impressive to be honest, a guy who was clearly struggling managed to tighten his crap up and pitch a near perfect 8 or so pitches.
   17. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 07:53 PM (#6012119)
Alcantara is freaking dealing right now. I think he's up to 6 consecutive strikeouts
..... and then Arenado hits a ball off of the pitcher to stop that streak.
   18. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 07:55 PM (#6012122)
Alcantara up to 8 strikouts, it's just the 4th inning.
   19. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 08:09 PM (#6012124)
a man on second pitcher up to bat, even with two strikes why isn't he continuing to bunt? (for the record, there was a man on first and the pitcher was trying to bunt, but the runner stole second, and now with two strikes they stopped doing that... It's a pitcher batting, bunt)
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 08:14 PM (#6012126)
Not a fan of bally's baseball taskbar or whatever, outs is not included in it unless you look closely.
   21. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 08:15 PM (#6012127)
Gant is a master out of getting of self created problems... not sure how long he can get away with that.
   22. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 08:24 PM (#6012131)
Okay, I hate that call, I get it's the rule, but no, that was a bs rule call.
   23. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 08:26 PM (#6012132)
home plate ump has been very helpful to Sandy Alcantara and his 10 strikeouts tonight (after five innings)
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 08:47 PM (#6012136)
10 strikeouts, 5th inning, 78 pitches, why worry about the pitcher?
   25. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 08:48 PM (#6012137)
ump helping the pitcher so much... that wasn't even close.
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 08:52 PM (#6012139)
Now the Cardinals have bases loaded and no outs... Alcantara has still been scary good tonight.
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 08:53 PM (#6012141)
passed ball scores a run... that kinda sucks for Alcantara.
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: April 06, 2021 at 08:56 PM (#6012142)
Marlins third baseman totally screwed up that play. Man on second and third and no one out, and on a ground out to the the third baseman, he allows Goldschmidt (the runner at third) to score on a play that should never have happened.
   29. phredbird Posted: April 06, 2021 at 09:36 PM (#6012148)

hey cfb, hope you had a good off season.

gallego looking good.

i agree about the bally bar ... not used to it yet.
   30. Jay Seaver Posted: April 06, 2021 at 09:43 PM (#6012151)
Crazy play to end the inning in Fenway - runners on 1st and 2nd, ball hit to the wall, everyone hears it bang like it richocheted off the wall and into Franchy Cordero's glove, but he throws in to second, where they tag the runner standing on the base after advancing from first (the other runner crossed home plate).

Can't blame the runners for getting that wrong - took replay to get it right - but, anyway, nuts.

'This place plays like Yellowstone Park', wtf are the casters talking about ?

At least a close game, I will say this : 'Go Cards !'.
   32. Walt Davis Posted: April 06, 2021 at 10:00 PM (#6012158)
I wasn't willing to pay $80 for pi so I can't do any research, but was curious, as to who had the most war without an all star appearance. (post 1935 of course)

Per stathead, just the hitters:

Tony Phillips 51
Salmon 41
Gibson 38
Chavez 38
Garry Maddox 37
Andrelton 35 (Andrelton has never made an AS team?)
a bunch of guys between 30 and 35

Tony Phillips also only received a very down-ballot (16th place) MVP finish ... even Maddox and Andrelton have done better than that.

Now the pitchers:

Candiotti 42
Darwin 40
Ostermueller, Liebrandt and Tudor 34
   33. Walt Davis Posted: April 06, 2021 at 10:05 PM (#6012159)
With the current slot for a "utility player", I'm sure Phillips would make an AS team these days. Even so, from ages 31-36 he was very much a full-time player who was averaging 5 WAR a year. Did Detroit not put him on the ballot?
   34. Walt Davis Posted: April 06, 2021 at 10:05 PM (#6012160)
<i>'This place plays like Yellowstone Park', wtf are the casters talking about ?<i>

They probably meant Jellystone

Is Bally Sports like a new network with really annoying casters ?
Unbelievable stuff.
   36. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 06, 2021 at 10:25 PM (#6012165)
Like two guys yelling: 'Let's go Bally Sports !'. Scary.
   37. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 06, 2021 at 10:26 PM (#6012166)
Over to the A's and Todgers.
   38. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 06, 2021 at 10:27 PM (#6012167)
Great, down 1:4 in the 3rd ! ######' boring Todgers.
   39. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 06, 2021 at 10:36 PM (#6012170)
The moment you realize it's Kershaw vs. the A's ... then you switch to Giants @Padres ! Buster Posey strikes out. Priceless.
The Bay Area is cursed.
   40. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 06, 2021 at 10:40 PM (#6012171)
In order to be allowed into Oracle Park, you need to prove your insanity and/or your total disregard for baseball skills.
   41. Jay Seaver Posted: April 06, 2021 at 10:56 PM (#6012172)
Red Sox bringing Tanner Houck in for the 11th, probably on the theory that going to the starter early in extras worked out pretty well for Cora in '18.

EDIT: It does not pay off.
   42. Walt Davis Posted: April 06, 2021 at 11:03 PM (#6012173)
Oracle Park

Could you translate that into Old Folk please?
   43. Walt Davis Posted: April 06, 2021 at 11:14 PM (#6012174)
Is Bally Sports like a new network with really annoying casters ?

It's the old Fox SN. Per Wiki, when Disney bought 21st C Fox they were required to dump FSN for anti-trust reasons.** The Diamond Sports Group is apparently a joint venture of Sinclair and a company owned by milquetoast TV personality Byron Allen. (Wiki actually refers to him as a "comedian" which, in my experience, would be extremely difficult to justify.) The DSG sold the naming rights to Bally who own casinos.***

I wish Bally pinball machines had paid out stock shares rather than free games.

** One of the largest producers of movies, TV shows and owners of archived material buying another major studio apparently not of anti-trust concern. But you can't have ESPN and FSN owned by the same folks.

*** I got tired of digging but there seem to be different divisions, maybe even different corporations, for the Bally that runs casinos and the Bally that makes pinball and slot machines although they both have rights to the logo. The SN naming rights are to the casino folks.

As part of the deal (if I read Wiki right), it seems the good Christian folks at Sinclair Broadcasting now own a chunk of Bally, a chunk that goes up substantially if the SN hits performance targets.

REDEMPTION FOR J.D. MARTINEZ!!
I suppose, but that ‘game-winning hit’ should have been caught.
