Angels acquire Dexter Fowler & cash considerations from St. Louis

The Angels today acquired OF Dexter Fowler and cash considerations from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Fowler, 34, is a veteran of 13 Major League seasons and has compiled 253 doubles, 82 triples (leads all active players), 127 home runs, 516 RBI and 148 stolen bases across 1,453 games for the Rockies (2008-13), Astros (2014), Cubs (2015-16) and Cardinals (2017-20). He was voted as the starting center fielder for the N.L. All-Star team in 2016, when he also helped lead the Cubs to a World Series championship.

wow, got a look at what he did the last 3 yrs, and he was just not very good.

he wore those red high top shoes that looked like clown shoes. very unsightly.

this is one of those situations where i'm very glad the cards are cutting the cord and letting the young guys get a shot. dylan carlson sure looked like he could step in and do the same if not better for a fraction of the cost.

The final piece!

The Cards REALLY wanted that 40-man roster spot, I guess (because saving $1,750,000 by trading away Fowler over DFAing him is not much relief).

The Aaron Miles incident has finally been avenged at least, so I thank Fowler for the good works he did even after leaving the Cubs.

Here's hoping he can rejuvenate his career and provide some clubhouse leadership for the Angels. He had an overlooked---at the time it was occurring it was overlooked, and now it's completely forgotten---very fine first season with the Cardinals in 2017, and I'll never forget how quickly many of the BFIB turned on Fowler during an admittedly awful 2018. This is a guy who genuinely seems like a good person, friendly and pleasant, and it got so bad that his wife had to exit social media and, IIRC, stop coming to games because of the abuse heaped on her and her husband.

Ditto 5...

I joke, but I was honestly rooting for him, even on the Cardinals. I like Dexter a lot.

I'm reminded of the video of his Cubs teammates celebrating and welcoming him back in spring training 2016 - I think he was supposed to sign with Baltimore IIRC? That certainly worked out well for all involved. He played his role perfectly for the 2016 team, culminating in the homer in Game 7, with the little spin move rounding first. What a moment.

One difference... the Cardinals traded Fowler, and on their twitter feed said great things about him... the Rockies trade their third baseman and in a public announcement implied bad things about him... just curious if you are a free agent, or a drafted player, based upon just these two organizations, which would you show preference too?

Iirc, the Rockies bad mouthed Fowler when they traded him too, didn’t they?

Rockies only sign FA where they're overbidding by 75%, so it doesn't really become an issue.

One of the rare Cub players that actually did their best for the Cubs.

I wonder if Mike Trout is having second thoughts about that extension...

The Rockies got rid of Fowler mostly to free up money to spend elsewhere, in that case for Justin Morneau, who had one decent year with them and one largely lost to injury.
