Angels acquire Hunter Renfroe, send 3 pitchers to Brewers

The Los Angeles Angels continued their busy start to the offseason Tuesday night, swinging a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers for veteran outfielder Hunter Renfroe.

In return, Milwaukee received three pitchers back: right-handers Janson Junk and Elvis Peguero and lefty Adam Seminaris.

This marks the second straight offseason Renfroe has been traded. The Brewers acquired him last December as part of the Jackie Bradley Jr. deal with the Boston Red Sox.

Renfroe, 30, went on to hit 29 home runs for Milwaukee to go with a .255 average and 72 RBIs. The previous season in Boston, he slugged 31 home runs.

The Halos have now made 3 really solid moves thus far this offseason. I’m excited, and now waiting for the other shoe to drop…

Ok, I'm down. The Angels are certainly letting Ohtani know that they want to win now.

Because he'll be gone next year? :-)

Renfroe looks like he could be Mike Trout's brother.

They really need to get one of the big three starters, even in an overpay. I wonder if the six man rotation could be a selling point for Degrom

It will be his 5th team in 5 years. He's in that spot where he's good enough that teams want to acquire him to fill a hole, but not good enough for teams to go out of their way to keep for the long term.

I thought I had heard something about him not listening to any coaching.

FYI, Fangraphs had a good piece on why Tyler Anderson's improvements are for real, and hence it being a really good deal for the Angels.

I think these last couple moves have been pretty good even if not massive. When Rendon and Ward went down last year, it really laid bare how shallow the roster was. The Angels last year were expecting big jumps for Marsh and/or Adell, which they didn't get, and maybe could have weathered if hadn't lost Rendon, then Ward. There's not much margin for error you're already starting a sub .200 hitting SS. Had they had this sort of depth last year, they may not have been nearly as terrible. The lineup during that losing streak and thereafter was basically Trout, Ohtani, and seven guaranteed outs.

And here I thought the return the Red Sox got last year was Junk.

Cookie - no they don’t.

Ohtani, Detmers, Sandoval, Suarez, Anderson is a front 5 full of #3 starters. Their starter ERA was like 6th in MLB last year. Starting pitching wasn’t the issue. It was offense.

They need a couple of bullpen arms, and MAYBE a RH first baseman to help Walsh, or a LH CF to help balance the lineup on certain days. Otherwise, they made three ASTOUNDING moves to add depth, and help weak areas.

Their starters are looking quite good to me. And cheap aside from Ohtani.

ZIPs came out with their pre-final roster zips. Given that angels are already set (payroll is now pretty high), it shows them being over .500 but that's before anyone else has made any moves yet. It's a safe bet they go into year as an odd on favorite to break .500 which at least has them thinking about a wild card. Of course their model entirely depends on the two big guys playing 155 games at a high level.

This is the second time Junk and Peguero have been traded together.

Well, y'know I was gonna make a joke that "and in Spanish, peguero means junk" ... and thought I should check just in case it did. And I find that peguero (at least one translation) means "pitch maker." Granted, that's "pitch" as in "tar" or "resin" ... or spider tack ... but a good name for a pitcher.

And I hope Junk throws a bunch of slow, breaking stuff.

I am a fan of the Los Angeles Angels. I hope with careful preparation tetris unblocked before the tournament they will play successfully.
