Angels agree to terms with free-agent veteran catcher Kurt Suzuki, per report

The Angels have agreed to terms with free-agent veteran catcher Kurt Suzuki on a one-year contract worth $1.5 million, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

Suzuki, 37, has spent the last two seasons with the Nationals, and he was a significant contributor during their 2019 championship run. Over the last three seasons, Suzuki has batted .268/.332/.453 (105 OPS+) with 31 home runs in 223 games. In the abbreviated 2020 season, Suzuki had a 99 OPS+ in 33 games for Washington. Across his long 14-year career, Suzuki has an OPS+ of 92 with 133 home runs and one All-Star appearance. With the Angels, Suzuki is likely to split time behind the plate with Max Stassi.

If Suzuki is the regular and plays at least 129 games, he'll move into the top 25 in all-time games caught. He's already caught more games than Del Crandall, Tim McCarver, Mike Scioscia, Terry Steinbach, or Sandy Alomar.

I'd think he'd need a 2 year deal to pull that off. Last time he caught that many games was 2015, when he was 31.

bb-ref has him at #41, 185 games behind Brian McCann and Deacon McGuire who are tied for 24th. With 79 G this year, he'd move into 33rd, passing Mickey Cochrane among others.

I can remember being excited when Suzuki came up with the A's, as Jason Kendall was pretty washed up by then. I couldn't understand how a strong grown man could have 676 PAs and not hit a home run. Suzuki was pretty solid for the A's and they rode him like a mule, I never would have expected him to last this long. I remember one time seeing a video of Suzuki working out, he was jumping out of a swimming pool from waist deep water, if you can imagine that. So great for him. Maybe he can play his final season in Oakland some year.

This seems like a bargain. Obviously at this age, the end could come at any moment but still a solid player. Sort of the Paul Konerko of Cs ... long career of dead average. He's at 20.3 WAR, 0.4 WAA, 20.8 oWAR.

Kurt was super popular during his three years in Minnesota, glad to see him get another year.

Think he'll MAGA (Make the Angels Great Again)?

Some of my fellow Nats fans are very glad to see him go because of his politics, but I can't really get mad at any ballplayer for being a right winger short of the Aubrey Huff/Curt Schilling school. I just assume they are all conservative republicans until proven differently

Funny thing is, he's from a very Democrat, left-leaning state.

Lots of us are able to overcome that disadvantage.

People have the right to choose who they support, but sentences like this make me sad; those who let politics bleed into every part of their life are quite tiresome.

I love Jackson's Browne's music, but I can tell from his lyrics he and I would not pull the same lever in the voting booth. I can still appreciate, listen to and yes, purchase his music.
