Angels call up two-way player Jared Walsh

The Los Angeles Angels have purchased the contract of an interesting player from their Triple-A affiliate. His name is Jared Walsh and he’s both a first baseman and a lefty reliever.

Walsh, 25, was batting .302/.398/.604 with 10 home runs and 26 RBI over 37 games for the Salt Lake Bees. He also had a 3.60 ERA in five relief appearances. The pitching has been a bit more of an experiment for Walsh over the years — he’s made only 15 appearances on the mound in three seasons while taking 1,472 trips to the plate — but it’s a fun little wrinkle in his game.

And the parade of relievers to and from the minors gets even stranger….

He looked good at the plate yesterday (extreme small sample size alert!), hitting the ball hard and not looking fooled by break stuff. If he can provide bullpen saving innings in blowouts or in extra innings, that's a plus. How much better he'll be than your average emergency position player pitcher remains to be seen. I don't think we'll see him in any high leverage situations any time soon, outside of long extra inning games.

Two-way players are always OK in my book.

The Angels have another 2-way player in the minors, but, he’s not having as good a time....

Kaleb Cowart in AA: .179/.214/.282 in 11 games as an infielder; 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA in 4 games as a relief pitcher.

And Bo Way (.275/.324/.392 between AA and AAA with good CF defense; 4 inn, 4 h, 3 w, 5 k - possible LOOGY). Way gets better marks as a pitcher than Walsh (from what I can tell) and hit .312 in the high minors last year, but the lack of secondary skills and older age put him well behind Walsh as a prospect for me (who I thought might make an interesting Rule 5 pick for a rebuilding team).

Walsh has raked at Salt Lake, which is something the Angels' supposed successor at 1B, Matt Thaiss, has yet to do. If he can chip in on both ends, that would go a long ways towards easing the roster crunch. Also, if he can take away ABs away from Pujols against righties, that'd be a really nice bonus.

Once upon a time, Cowart was a fairly regarded prospect - Couple years in the top 100 (I recall BPro in particular liked him)... what happened? He hit a wall at AA, but eventually seemed to regain his footing with a decent 2016 at AAA.... and then seems to have completely forgotten how to hit.
