Angels Sign Adam Eaton

The Angels announced the signing of veteran outfielder Adam Eaton to a major league contract. To create 40-man roster space, left-hander Dillon Peters has been designated for assignment.

Eaton signed a one-year, $8MM deal with the White Sox over the offseason. He’d generally been a solid performer over his previous four seasons with the Nationals, but it was still a bit of a curious decision given Eaton’s underwhelming 2020 campaign. The left-handed hitter slashed just .226/.285/.384 across 176 plate appearances with Washington last season.

Good signing.

This is super clever. For the cost of a single game of Mike Trout's yearly salary, then can see if they can catch lightening in a bottle. Maybe Eaton mans RF really well and slaps some singles, a few gappers and gives them some value. If not, well for the price of a new 911 turbo, you've taken a shot at it.

Too bad they didn't keep him in 2014. They got him in the Mark Trumbo trade, in addition to Tyler Skaggs. Great trade, but they wanted more pitching and flipped him to the White Sox for Hector Santiago, who wasn't very good for the Angels. (Edit: he was actually about league average, better than I remembered. But not as good as Eaton was)

He was great for the White Sox from 2014-16. Angels win anyway in 2014 (maybe Eaton helps them scratch out a run in the first two games against KC?). In 2015 they miss the playoffs by a single game, giving most of their LF playing time to Matt Joyce, who hit .174. Eaton was a 4.1 WAR player with the White Sox, so that should be another playoff appearance.

There's nothing he could have done for the 2016 team, but if they were smart enough to trade him for Giolito after the season, that would really have helped the current team.

Um, how much is Eaton getting? I'm guessing it's more than the $222K/game that Trout is being paid...

Pro-rated portion of the minimum, no? So probably a little more than $222, but not a lot.

Wanted to compare him to Pujols (while with LAA) - Eaton has a bit more OBP, Pujols has a bit more SLG. Of course Eaton can play the field, which is the big difference.

Also checking in on Pujols in LAD: surprisingly good so far. 124 OPS+, SLG > 500. Only 116 PA, but still, we're outside of Voros' law territory. 0.4 WAR, with a strong second half maybe he can finish above 100?

Even if Eaton doesn't hit, he at least knows how to play defense at a big league level. With Upton and Trout hurt, the Angels have been playing Ward and Rengifo and Wong -- three career infielders -- at the corners. Not surprisingly, their outfield defense has been catastrophically bad. Even if Eaton doesn't hit much, he's still an upgrade.

Hector Santiago, who wasn't very good for the Angels. (Edit: he was actually about league average, better than I remembered. But not as good as Eaton was)

Santiago did pitch better for the Angels (99 ERA+) than the pitching Adam Eaton (career 84 ERA+).

I will never forget, he and Howie Kendrick, sitting beside one another in the dugout, shifting gears in their imaginary truck after one or the other made a great hitting play for the 2019 Nationals.
If nothing else, he will be a positive bench presence for the Angels.
The Nats would love to have Giolito back, but Adam was a key cog in the 2019 Nationals success.
I will always wish him well.

This is a good move for the Angels, if only to get Taylor Ward and Luis Rengifo out of the outfield. Both have made some bad plays out there in close games. I don't expect much from Eaton with the bat, but hopefully he can at least hold his own up there and provide solid defense in left or right.

The most alarming thing about this is that it means both Brandon Marsh and Jo Adell aren't ready yet, which the Angels desperately need.

Let's see: Adell 277/327/565 with a 30% K-rate; Marsh 241/364/446 with a 26% K-rate (just 99 PA); both at AAA Salt Lake. Combine Adell's power and Marsh's discipline and you've got a might fine line. I assume AAAW is quite the high-scoring environment and Salt Lake extra so but Adell might be near a point where it's not gonna do him much good to stay down.

To be further pedantic, isn't the cost of Eaton even lower than prorated minimum?

Even if the Angels didn't sign Eaton, they still have to pay some other player at least the league minimum to occupy that 26th spot on the roster everyday.

So the cost of Eaton isn't actually the prorated minimum, it should be whatever the player that loses his 40-man spot for Eaton (Dillon Peters) gets paid in the minors for the rest of the year if he clears waivers or gets in severance upon declaring free agency, PLUS the minor league salary for the rest of the season of the position player Eaton replaces on the roster.

Adell’s batting line is extremely unimpressive for the league/park he’s in. I have zero confidence that he can hit enough to help the team now. I’d keep him down until he actually impresses.

Marsh got off to a slow start, was injured for a month, then went to the low minors for a rehab. In 5 games since he rejoined SLC, he’s hitting 391/440/783. That’ s promising.

Adell's strikeout rate is bad enough to keep him there, but mostly it's his defense. They want him to polish his outfield work before bringing him up again. And this isn't a Kris Bryant manipulation of service time thing - he was legitimately awful at catching the ball when he came up last year.

Marsh's problem has been staying healthy otherwise I would have expected him to be up already.
   14. Ziggy: social distancing since 1980 Posted: July 15, 2021 at 07:53 PM (#6029207)
I've started to have doubts about Adell as a quality major league player.

Among guys with >100 PA, his OBP is 9th on his own team. Granted his SLG is second, but he's trailing Luis Rengifo, the guy that they just signed Adam Eaton to replace.
   15. Barry`s_Lazy_Boy Posted: July 15, 2021 at 08:27 PM (#6029212)
Adell is a 22 year old leading AAA in HR. Which is something.
   16. Shohei Brotani (formerly LA Hombre) Posted: July 15, 2021 at 08:59 PM (#6029216)
People are way too dismissive of Adell's future. He's still one of the youngest guys in AAA. If he hadn't made such a bad impression as a 21-year-old playing out of position last year, he'd still be near the top of every prospect list in the country.

No real opinion on Adell, but young players can and do improve. Giving up on them too quickly can be a major mistake.
   18. Rally Posted: July 16, 2021 at 02:08 PM (#6029297)
I wouldn't give up on Adell, but he needs a lot of improvement before he's a legit MLBer.

He's got enough speed that he should be able to defend, but last year was brutal and I don't know how much I can excuse it to playing out of position. It's not like he was a minor league third baseman told to play outfield for the first time. He was a mostly a center fielder in the minors, but had played a few games in each corner.

I have seen a zillion speedy minor league center fielders come up to the big leagues to play a corner, and most of them handle it fine. Manny Margot was a minor league center fielder, and a CF in San Diego. In SD he played all of one game in right, and in the minors he played fewer games in the corners than Adell had. The Rays put him in the corners after they traded for him and he's been damn near the best defensive corner outfielder in the game over the last year.

My conclusion is that Adell is no Manny Margot on defense. I hope he can improve to at least be average.
   19. Shohei Brotani (formerly LA Hombre) Posted: July 16, 2021 at 03:43 PM (#6029313)
However, Margot was also a 25-year-old veteran when that happened, not a 21-year-old getting his first taste of the major leagues. Adell's calling card was always his bat, he was never a speedy outfielder type. Again, if he hadn't been brought up last year, he would still be near the top of every prospect list in the country.

I wouldn't count on that. Eaton is pretty well known as a clubhouse cancer.

[18] Honestly, I feel like Trout should be moved to a corner at this point, not because his defense has declined, but because he keeps getting injured and playing a corner would be less taxing. Keeping his bat in the lineup is far more important than his glove in center field.
