Angels to call up top prospect Jo Adell

The Angels are off to a slow start this season, but they’re set to get a boost with the addition of top prospect Jo Adell, who will be called up by the club, a source told on Monday. The Angels optioned outfielder Michael Hermosillo and infielder Jared Walsh to their alternate site in Long Beach, Calif., as Mike Trout will be reinstated from the restricted list for Tuesday’s game in Seattle.

Adell, ranked as the No. 6 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, is the club’s highest-rated prospect since Trout. The 21-year-old has incredible raw power and can play all three outfield positions, but he has mostly been seeing time in right field with Trout entrenched in center.

The Angels will have to work out Adell’s playing time, as general manager Billy Eppler said before the season that when Adell gets called up, he’s going to see regular playing time and not sit on the bench.

Potential for a good lineup here.

OF Trout, Upton, Adell
IF ?, La Stella, Fletcher (until Simmons comes back), Rendon
DH Ohtani
C Castro

I wonder if Brian Goodwin could learn to play first base? He has never played the position in the majors or minors. Neither has Upton. But anybody can play first base. It's easy to learn. Then limit Pujols to playing 1B against lefties. Or just tell him the team has opted out of playing him at all.

But after the last few years I really get the feeling that if the Angels could have traded for Betts and Realmuto, plus Ketel Marte to play second base, without giving up anybody good they would still find a way to play under .500.

It's incredibly hard.

I wonder if Upton could learn to play first base? At some point, Brandon Marsh needs to get a shot, and he would reported to be the best defensive outfielder in the group.

Yeah, at one point I was really looking forward to seeing if Marsh would take a step forward this year. He's shown good skills so far but not a lot of power, but seems like a big and strong enough guy (6-4, 215) to break out and start hitting bombs. I see no reason to think the power won't come. After all, Trout didn't hit for power in the minors, and neither did Edmonds and Anderson a generation ago.

But thanks to COVID his 2020 will probably be limited to BP off his fellow Angel pitchers.

Thought about Upton, but he's never played anywhere but OF as a pro either. I am disappointed in how he's aging. Only 4 years older than Trout, but he's got the appearance of a middle aged man out there. Developing a bit of a gut. At one point he was a 5 tool player, now only thing we can hope he does is hit one out of the park now and then.

It looks like Jo Adell will basically play every day in right field. It'll be Justin Upton platooning with the left-handed-hitting Brian Goodwin in left field, Angels manager Joe Maddon said.
