Angels trading Shohei Ohtani is extremely unlikely, but not out of the question, per report

Would the Los Angeles Angels really trade All-Star pitcher/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani while he’s at the peak of his career? It’s been a question bandied about for a few weeks now.

Thursday, the New York Post reported that there’s at least a remote possibility it could happen. An Ohtani trade remains “extremely unlikely,” but the Angels are “perhaps for the first time not hanging up the phone” when teams come calling on Ohtani, so says the report.

Speculation here is that the Angels would wait until after a Juan Soto trade and then any team wanting Ohtani would need to beat whatever the Nationals got for Soto. Soto is younger and likely more of a sure thing moving forward, but Ohtani is essentially two players.

A key question is Trout's health and durability. If he can still be Trout (at least in a corner OF spot or 1B) then keep Ohtani. If (hope not!) Trout's injury is chronic or career-altering then keep Ohtani because he's now your only star. If Trout can still hit like Trout but needs to DH full-time ... well then keep Ohtani if you think he can handle LF/1B and pitching (maybe he shifts to 32 starts but only, say, 80 games in the lineup) ... but trade him if you don't think he can handle that. He is FA at the end of next year so the Angels may very soon be facing the dilemma of how to keep carrying Trout's contract while paying Ohtani $45-50 M a year.

The Angels absolutely should trade Ohtani, though they probably won't. If I could count on signing Shohei this offseason to something like 8/$400 or 10/$480, I'd trade every last asset in my farm system for him.

The way the injury is described it seems it has to be chronic. Although I have yet to see a doctor weigh in on that subject. And if that injury is the main reason he's missed all these games that past few years then one has to expect it will have a significant impact on the rest of his career.

Is there any way Trout could be traded?

You’d trade every asset in your farm system for the opportunity to pay $48 million for 38-year-old Ohtani?
