The Los Angeles Angels third baseman, who’s on the 60-day injured list with a shin injury, ducked a question Sunday on his health.
Rendon said, “No habla inglés today,” before putting on a hoodie and leaving the clubhouse, according to The Athletic’s Sam Blum.
That comes months after the 33-year-old Rendon was suspended for four games by Major League Baseball after video of a physical altercation with a fan in Oakland went viral.
The Angels slugger was recorded grabbing a fan by their shirt at Oakland’s O.co Coliseum after losing the season opener to the Athletics, 2-1, appearing to take a swipe at him — though he did not connect.

1. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2023 at 01:09 PM (#6140531)So far Rendon $129M for 3.1 WAR.
Josh Hamilton, $107M, 2.7 WAR
Albert was a bargain at these rates.
Yes. Tyler Anderson is an absolutely brutal signing as well. Zero WAR this year for $13MM, and quite frankly, it's hard to believe he's been that good. 2 years left, and I can't see it getting better.
Pretty much since Torii Hunter, just about every guy they've signed has been worse than the worst case scenario. Even you looked at Hamilton, Pujols, Matthews, Rendon, Anderson, CJ Wilson, and heck I'll throw a Loup and Tepera in there, and said "these are probably not going to turn out to be bad deal, but they'll at least deliver some decent value for a year or two", they've all been disappointments even by those low standards. I guess Estevez has been OK. Drury has been alright. And I'm not necessarily going to ding them for long shot one year deals that didn't pan out (Cahill, Harvey, etc.). They may dodge a bullet on Ohtani, but Trout is essentially Angels era Pujols now, and that's when he's in the lineup, so they're looking at roughly $260MM for maybe 20 WAR or so if they're lucky, and they probably won't be very lucky.
CJ Wilson
Pujols
Hamilton
Cozart
Rendon
Syndergaard
Iglesias
Anderson
Yeah, so bad that Pujols might be the best of the lot.
EDIT: The Angels got out from under Iglesias after just 40 innings, flipping him to Atlanta for laundry lint. Iglesias was dominant for Atlanta last year (1227 ERA+ in 26 IP) and outstanding this year (175 ERA+) so that was probably just a case where the Angels weren't patient enough.
I understand this take if you haven't been following the situation, but this isn't the first time he's really been a petulant a-hole in responses to a simple question. It's not that hard to say "Unfortunately no updates. I continue to re-evaluate with our medical staff, and blah blah blah." Instead we get:
* I can't answer that question. When asked if he's doing any baseball activity, Rendon said (somewhat sarcastically): "That gives you too much detail."
* When asked how he was feeling today, Anthony Rendon (shin) said “I’m not here,” and left the clubhouse.
*Anthony Rendon was in the clubhouse today when reporters were there for the first time during this home stand. However, he said that since he’s on the “dead list” he doesn’t have to do interviews.
From a fan's perspective, dead would actually be an improvement to his condition. It kind of only makes sense if either a) he hates Sam Blum for some reason, or b) you're trying to make the fans of the team you "play" for actively hate you.
And not guessing that he hated baseball. That’s a quote. He did it because he could do it and make a lot of money.
He can't catch up to high fastballs. It's been a problem for him for a while, but now he's just seeing nothing except the type of pitches that he can no longer hit. He's been ridiculously un-clutch the last couple seasons*, though he also seems to get rung up for strikes on more pitches out of strike zone than anyone else on the Angels for some reason (no superstar respect for him, but that's just an observed opinion). I'd say it's surely time to see what anyone is willing to give up for him, and quite frankly, if it were my job, I'd have been very tempted to include Trout, Rendon, and Anderson on this recent waiver dump. You want that production for 7 more years at $37MM per? Be my guest.
*Honestly, while it was a great moment, the most unsurprising outcome of the final at bat of the WBC this year was Trout striking out.
That was reported at the time (I think JoePoz was the writer), but in the years since then he's expressed fondness for the sport.
I've been following the situation, and I've had the same response to any other time he's been asked. What difference does it make if he says nothing while blowing off Blum, or says nothing, but in a Jeteresque way that doesn't blow off Blum? Say he uses that exact phrase you did - is there anything different at all about this situation, and do the fans suddenly like him more than they did before or do they still complain that he makes too much money for the production he brings back just as much?
Or C) He knows its a reporter (strange how it's only the same one reporting these comments) trying to needle him for not living up to his contract.
Yes, that's why I brought him up. Rendon also openly said, before the Angels signed him, that he doesn't really like baseball and just plays it because it's his job.
I am bearish on Trout's future. Not that I want to be but the description of his back injury last year sounded just brutal. Apparently the muscles are pulling away from the spine. Is that correct? That does not good for anyone but especially to power hitters who generate huge amounts of torque around their back.
And yes, CJ Wilson was the guy I was thinking of
Also, if you're a player I like, your career will collapse as soon as you sign that big money contract (see Baez). Granted, collapse in a "I get a guaranteed $100 M or more way" but pity the poor Rox for ... Kris Bryant, 7/$182 with a mere 456 PA and -0.3 WAR in the first two years. Per DRS and TZ, his defense turned into Adam Dunn upon arrival.
Apparently nobody over the age of 30 will ever hit a baseball again.

I feel bad for the guy; it’s pretty clear what he disliked was being a star; not being a ballplayer.
Hmm, I wonder if there might be any other differences, any at all, between Trout and Rendon's time with the Angels.
Well, I don't hate Zack Cozart, if that helps. Mo Vaughn missed a whole season and I didn't hate him. Even when he was playing, Rendon looked pretty checked out. Even his defense was pretty terrible.
I know about the Rendon situation exactly what I've read in this thread, so take this for the wild speculation that it is, but maybe Rendon isn't a jerk, maybe he's just frustrated and unhappy. Lord knows I take it out on other people, who I recognize don't deserve it, when I'm frustrated and unhappy. And not being able to clear *checks Bref* 60 games in a season since 2019 is the sort of thing that might make someone frustrated and unhappy.
Ever since the early season incident, the beat writer has made it a mission to bust Rendon’s balls when he can.
Fans fed up with Rendon’s inability to stay on the field eat that up.
Or maybe that makes you a jerk too? (Kidding!)
Asking for an update on his injury is breaking his balls? And Jeff Fletcher is reporting the same stuff, so it's not just Sam Blum, who may be the best beat writer the Angels have ever had. Meanwhile, Taylor Ward was able to sit down and give a full blown interview about his recovery from injury. Maybe it's not the writer.
I actually had this feeling that baseball is finally moving towards international football and American football in this respect. Players are starting to be less useful earlier and easier.. would be interesting to see something like a quantile regression of value vs. age over the years. My guess is that players decline in value much more quickly now than before; I don't know if that is because they are starting later or it is easier for them to quit or just a larger pool of players to choose from means that you always prefer younger and cheaper.
I suspect it's not the case that players become less useful so much that the folks building the teams have figured out how to maximize the use of team control and the idea of replacement-level players such that a lot more get replaced with some guy from the minors who provides 75% of the value for 10% of the price. It seems more likely that between better conditioning, training, and stuff like laser eye surgery, a hitter could probably be effective for longer, but management both sees how they can save money by letting guys who might make $5M rather than the minimum go. It probably doesn't help matters that teams aren't so much owned by rich local fans who want to be identified with the team so much as their kids and multi-billion dollar partnerships who are less likely to be sentimental about keeping familiar faces around.
You do not see Jeff Fletcher giving these smug updates through Twitter - it’s always factual and not snarky.
It sounds like Blum is trying to make a name for himself and stir the pot - Rendon doesn’t like dealing with the media and that is bad when he is out for much of the year, but we don’t need Twitter updates on how Rendon hurt someone’s feelings.
Angels paid Albert $240M for 12.8 WAR.
So far Rendon $129M for 3.1 WAR.
Gary Matthews Jr., $50M (some of that was probably picked up by the Mets) 0 WAR
Josh Hamilton, $107M, 2.7 WAR
Albert was a bargain at these rates.
The Pujols contract looks like the worst of those to me from a value standpoint:
Relative to Rendon, they paid an extra $111 million for 9.7 WAR.
Relative to Matthews, they paid an extra $190 million for 12.8 WAR.
Relative to Hamilton, they paid an extra $133 million for 10.1 WAR.
That being said, there's something to be said for the fact that Pujols stayed on good terms with the fan base and was able to play most days. WAR isn't everything.
