AP: Halladay has appendicitis, expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks

Former Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay is expected to miss four to six weeks after having an emergency appendectomy Friday, the latest bad break for the struggling Toronto Blue Jays.

Halladay arrived at Rogers Centre on Friday looking pale and complaining of pain in his lower right abdomen. Trainer George Poulis recognized the symptoms and took Halladay to a local hospital for surgery.

“You’ve got to look at it as a chance for someone else to step up,” Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said. “We’re not going to sit here and raise the white flag, say we’re quitting.”

“We’ve got some young kids who are going to get an opportunity now. We’ll see who can handle coming up here and giving us those innings, giving us a chance to win.”

Is it really appendicitis, or does his right arm need to be amputated?

i predict more profanity from ricciardi.

So, which Jay is next? I think Frank Thomas might lose an eye in a freak toothbrushing accident. Just a guess.

And now it looks like Troy Glaus pulled a hammy on a fly out to RF.

Don't look good...

Well remember, J. P.'s admitted he's lied about pitcher injuries before. Halladay might be dead.

Tampa Bay gets to come in fourth place this year.

Troy Glaus just left the game after the first. Jason Smith now playing 3rd.

Is post #7 series or a joke? I can't tell.

Remember in the off-season when J.P. said how lucky the Jays were that Meche signed with the Royals after he turned down Toronto's offer? Well, Meche has a 2.15 ERA and a record of 3-1 for a team that's 8-23 when he's not the pitcher of record. And if things work out just so, he might be the reason KC ends the season with a better record than Toronto.

Well, the Jays are lucky they didn't sign Meche - that would be another $11 million this year not to make the playoffs.

(The Royals' play this year is proving JP's point. That doesn't mean that the point will hold for the full length of Meche's contract of course.)

The real question here is how would the Red Sox deal with tonight's developments?

I assume the Red Sox would be happy to see a division opponent suffer a major injury.

Oh. You mean if it happened to them?

See 2006.

This is all bad karma on JP for lying to everyone back in the spring. The Gods were not amused.

Oh, I'm sure Toronto fans are going to try to tell us this is another "freak accident," just like all of Halladay's other injuries. Nobody's buying it anymore, people.

DCW3, I await patiently how you can correlate an appendectomy and a come-backer to the mound. Go.

Maybe Ben Sheets' appendix is the reason he isn't striking anyone out.

I think it's patently obvious that Halladay's mechanics put a great deal of strain on in his appendix, resulting in this completely predictable injury. The pain in his appendix results in him being in poor fielding position when in he finishes his follow-through, making him unable to get out of the way of line drives.
