Arizona Diamondbacks’ Merrill Kelly to undergo thoracic outlet surgery

Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly will undergo surgery on Wednesday to relieve symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome. The procedure involves the removal of a rib in order to alleviate pressure on the nerves in the shoulder area.

General Manager Mike Hazen said Kelly could begin playing catch eight weeks after surgery, putting him in position to have a relatively normal offseason and report to spring training in good health.

Hazen said the team’s medical staff is hopeful Kelly will make a full recovery, and Hazen did not make it sound like the procedure will adversely affect the Diamondbacks’ forthcoming decision on the $4.25 million club option in Kelly’s contract for 2021.

“We haven’t had any formal discussions on options for next year yet,” Hazen said, “but I wouldn’t see how this would have a major impact on that decision right now.”

Never having heard of Kelly, I assumed he was a prospect or an anonymous reliever bouncing around. Then I got to the "decision on the $4.25 M club option."

So Kelly was drafted by the Rays way back in 2010 out of college. Reasonably normal progression, he had a very nice season in AAA with a 2.76 ERA in 2014 ... and the Rays released him. He went to Korea where he put up what look like fairly mediocre numbers given the level of competition. AZ signed him for 2019 for 2/$5.5 plus a couple of option years. He was solid last year with 180 IP and 101 ERA+ and off to a nice start this year. He'll be 32 next year ... I wouldn't be surprised if they work out a cheaper deal in place of the option.
