As he predicted, Mariners and GM Jerry Dipoto start MLB winter meetings quietly | The Seattle Times

Given the Mariners’ plan to play their young core this season, the projected 25-man roster has only minor holes that they plan to fill. Dipoto still plans to sign at least one experienced free-agent reliever, if not two, and a starting pitcher who is versatile enough to pitch out of the bullpen if/when touted prospect Justin Dunn takes over the No. 5 spot in the rotation.

“If there’s an opportunity for us to get better, to add players that we think can be here for more than just a cup of coffee, we would love to do that,” he said. “Whether it be via trade or even free agency with the bounce-back type of guys … guys coming off injury or ineffectiveness, there are other candidates out there we certainly have our eye on and we are open to it.”

Those signings could likely come in very late December to early January.

“Who knows, things move fast sometimes,” he said.

young core? I look at the 2019 roster and I see not a lot of "young" and no "core." Their current 40-man roster has only 8 players under 25.

Clearly, you’re not appreciating the value of a cost-controlled AA 1B who could be the next Case Kotchman.

And if Kyle Lewis hits his Jake Marisnick ceiling?

The young core is more Kelenic, Julio, Gilbert, who fans are hoping to see at the end of 2020 than Evan White, Long, Lewis, Sheffield, Dunn, who should be in place at the beginning.

But hey, that is 8 legitimate starter prospects who will be cost-controlled at the same time for years. How big would the group have to be to count as a young core?

#3: Fair enough but (1) I would not refer to that as "playing the young core this season" but rather "planning to call up the young core at some point this season" and (2) in this age of extreme service time games why would anybody expect to see a genuine top prospect called up in July? (3) "core" to me suggests guys with ML time -- what the Ms have are prospects. I'm not trying to start a semantics debate (to each their own) but this is "the Ms plan to continue to be non-competitive and cheap while the rebuild hopefully progresses."

In contrast, for example, the Braves obviously have a "young core." That's a pretty extreme example given they've made the playoffs the last two years. Perhaps more relevantly, while it's possibly too early to claim this, the Jays have a young core of the three sons with not a lot of PT but really good performance. What the Ms had was 42 not good innings out of Sheffield and Dunn, 240 pretty good PAs out of Long and Lewis and 4 guys who haven't debuted yet. It's not the "size" of the group that concerns me, it's the "established" ML quality that keeps this group from being referred to as a "core."

Looking in more detail (I don't really follow prospects) -- Kelenic is just (an old) 20 and gives him an ETA of 2022 (which seems pessimistic given they also have him at #13 and he's already at AA). Rodriguez will be just 19, also has an ETA of 2022 and I suspect they'll bump that up at least a year before the season starts. I'd be surprised if we saw either this year (why would the Ms start the clock?) but maybe one of them will "force" the Ms to promote him (or the Ms make them an appropriate White-ish offer). That's just not a "core" yet.

I'd probably lump Crawford in there, too.

When DiPoto says 'core' he means the core of a good trade package.
