Isan Díaz placed on restricted list, opting out of 2020 MLB season

The Marlins are going to be without second baseman Isan Díaz for the remainder of their 2020 season. The club placed him on the restricted list late Friday night, according to the official MLB transactions page. Opting out of the season was first mentioned as a possibility for him earlier on Friday by Jon Heyman, who confirms Saturday morning that Díaz is indeed leaving.

Per league rules, the window has closed for players on the restricted list for COVID-19 related issues to appeal for reinstatement. That is the case for Díaz, who has seen 18 of his teammates test positive for the virus during the last week. He will not account against Miami’s 60-man player pool moving forward.

Díaz is the only Marlin thus far to opt out. However, 15 total MLB players—ranging from rookies to accomplished veterans—have done so.

Don't really know much about Mr. Díaz.

Admittedly, he was a very good prospect and the Marlins need warm bodies, but this is going to hurt Mr. Díaz (who will lose out on all those very needed 2020 reps) much more than he realizes going forward.

In any case, his choice, and it needs to be respected.

Someone will write a book about the last 7-8 days in the Marlins organization.

He got a $750 K signing bonus in 2014, 56 days of service time last year and another 7-8 this year is around another $200 K. He's walking away from $150 K or so. It's true that he's a fringe guy and missing games won't help his development. But lord only knows when the Marlins will be able to get enough players on the field to play and he can hit at home. Given nearly all the minor leaguers aren't getting any reps, it's not clear how much this will hurt him relative to his competition.

Will probably hurt him less than intubation would.

can we get an update on the issue of rosters and how covid sickness will impact this? From an earlier thread it was pointed out that bringing more guys onto the roster will then have to be released when other players recover from covid and are then put back on the 50 man roster or whatever it is. But I thought whatever guys they are adding at this point are all cannon fodder anyways so what diff does it make? I lost track of the original thread due to this inane interface so what's the reasoning on this? thanks.

A lot of the guys in the player pools are top prospects so you wouldn't be able to immediately dfa or outright them. That's why the Marlins are scrambling to add guys from outside the organization.

OK so what are the players pools is this different than the 50 man? Im not getting this. I thought usually there is a 40 man roster and everyone not on that roster is essentially fair game. No? So now its a 50 man? or whatever? where were these other top prospects last year ? Not on the 40 man?

explain like I 5.

6/8, AFAIK, the problem is that some of the players on the taxi squads are genuine prospects, but they're not currently on the Marlins' 40 man roster.

In order to play for the Marlins whenever they take the field again, those prospects would have to be included as part of the 40 man roster, which is doable what with all the Marlins players on the COVID-19 special IL. The problem, again, is when the Marlin players on the COVID-19 special IL start coming back, because THEY take up 40-man spots... .so what do you do with prospects which you had to include on the 40-man roster in order to call up?

In order to clear up on the 40-man roster, you have to move players to the 60-day IL, the restricted list (Isan Díaz, AFAIK, now goes on the Restricted List due to having opted out of the season) or cut players on the 40-man roster.

Might the Marlins finessse the issue so as to not have to cut prospects? Sure. That's a level of roster engineering which is a number of pay grades above me.

But the issue is still there.

There are players in the (60-man) player pool who are prospects but aren't on the 40-man roster (and they don't need to be on it yet). Last year they were in low-A or something (there are even 2020 draft picks for a bunch of teams).

#8 ... how much explanation do you want/need? (Most of the following is well-known so quite possibly you already know it and I've over-interpreted your question.)

I've lost track of the exact rule these days but basically a drafted/signed player gets up to 3-3.5 seasons in the minors without needing to be added to the 40-man roster. If they aren't on the 40-man roster at that point, then they either must be added or they are made available in the rule 5 draft.

Once a player is added to the 40-man roster, his options start. If you add a player to the 40-man while keeping him in the minors, that's one option used. (Options are yearly so, once optioned to the minors, a player can be moved up and down as often as desired in that season and it's still just one option used.) A team gets up to 3 options for a player at which point they have to be on the 25-man or DFA'd/released/minor-league FA.

So a prospect is generally not added to the 40-man until absolutely necessary, either because they've used up that initial 3-3.5 years or they are going straight to the 25-man (no option used). Most of the prospects on the 60-man taxi squad are not on the 40-man roster. Adding them to it this year has implications for what the team can do with them in future years. Not necessarily a big deal, they're probably more concerned with starting their service time clock (which is time on the 25-man).

Sorry 26-man and currently 30-man.
