A’s Promote Shea Langeliers, Release Stephen Piscotty

The A’s announced they’ve selected the contract of top catching prospect Shea Langeliers. The club also recalled infielder David MacKinnon from Triple-A Las Vegas, placed center fielder Ramón Laureano on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 15, with a left oblique strain and released right fielder Stephen Piscotty.

It’s a notable shakeup for the A’s, who’ll get their first look at a player they hope to be a key piece of the future. Langeliers was one of four players Oakland received from the Braves in the Matt Olson trade this spring. Arguably the headliner of the deal, the righty-hitting backstop is regarded by most prospect evaluators as a potential above-average regular behind the dish.

The ninth overall pick in the 2019 draft, Langeliers has spent the past three years progressing up the minor league ladder.

Even though I follow the A's, it just never registered that Stephen Piscotty has had seasons where he hit 22 and 27 (?!?) home runs. It's been 4 years of at- or below-replacement since then. It's a triumph just to make it to the majors, much less have a few good seasons, but I think it's over for Mr. Piscotty.

I assume Langeliers has a devastating cutter.

Doubly good move.
Piscotty is not very good and frequently injured.
Langeliers looks like a stud starting catcher to me. Defense-first guy who now mashes too. Of course the A's remaining best player is their catcher Sean Murphy. There was some rumor the A's would trade Murphy this season in addition to everyone else of value, guessing that will happen this offseason. Tough to trade catchers mid-season, they say.

As a Cardinal I thought Stephen Piscotty was one of the worst base runners I've ever seen. He wasn't slow but just a terrible decision-maker on the bases. He must have run into 25 outs while he played for us

Murphy remains cheap so it’ll be interesting jf the As trade him. On the one hand it’s possible he and Langeliers will be the best position players next year so that makes no sense. On the other hand it’s hard to get value for a guy who’s good and just entering first year of arb and controlled through 2025
