A’s reportedly eyeing Tropicana site for possible Strip ballpark

The Oakland Athletics reportedly have their sights set on the Tropicana hotel site to build a potential ballpark on the Las Vegas Strip.

Two other sites also have piqued the team’s interest, one owned by Wynn Las Vegas and the other by Caesars Entertainment, according to a report Wednesday from CNBC.

Bally’s Corp., which owns the Tropicana Las Vegas, declined to comment on the report. A spokesperson for the A’s also declined to comment. Officials for Wynn and Caesars didn’t respond to a request for comment.

A’s President Dave Kaval told the Review-Journal last month that the team had put an offer on a site where it could look to build a $1 billion Major League ballpark. Kaval didn’t reveal the site at that time but noted the team was down to two or three sites in Las Vegas after whittling a list that once included over 20 sites.

If the ballpark ends up at the Tropicana site, it would add to an already robust offering of event spaces on the south portion of the resort corridor. The possible 30,000-35,000-seat stadium would be located within walking distance of Allegiant Stadium, T-Mobile Arena, the MGM Grand Garden arena and Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay hotel-casino.

Did anybody else think of Tampa Bay when they read the headline?

Did anyone else think a strip-ballpark might not bring in enough new fans to offset losing the family business when they read the headline?

Yep. Two teams in the Bay Area would undoubtedly cause a massive implosion which would eventually swallow the Earth.

Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay hotel-casino

Maybe the A's can change their name to something like the Angels. The Nevada Athletics at Tropicana of Las Vegas ball-team.

I've been eyeing a BMW 8 series, that doesn't mean I'm ever going to have one.

Rays will play half their games in Montreal, and the A's will play half their games in an equally ridiculous location. All things balanced, as they should be.

Thought maybe the A's were signing Torii Hunter.

Then Tampa Bay can move to Oakland and become the East Bay Rays.

That depends. How classy are the strippers?

Let's talk business. First of all, you're all done. The A's don't have that kind of muscle anymore. You're getting chased out of the Bay Area but the local and state governments. What do you think is going on here? You think you can come here and take over? I talked to the Rays. I can make the deal without you!

The Tropicana is kind of the start of the nowhere area of Vegas. Excalibur, Luxor, and Mandalay Bay then pivot south. It's next to the airport. Don't see it being a great addition to the area but then again you have to put it around there or else it's pointless.

What does this mean?

I immediately thought this was about Tampa …..
Tropicana + strip (Tampa is a main strip club hub) = Tampa

Then I thought it might be something about strip coin ( a new cryptocurrency)

Glad it’s Vegas. Would be fun to see games there.

By Las Vegas, MLB, or BBTF standards?

It means it ain't gonna do squat for the area and there is nowhere else to put it.

In some sense this might be the perception, but Oakland and Alameda County are still trying to lie down for the A's. The county already sold their 1/2 share (though the State of California may still litigate this) and the City has just about agreed to sell their 1/2 share, too.

City of Oakland considers laying down for the A's

All of this WITHOUT A DEAL FOR THEM TO STAY!

Of course a few different groups have now popped up trying to get the City's half of the Coliseum, right now the City has voted to sell their half to a group headed by Robert Bobb, the former City manager, and a number of community activists, and the other is headed by Dave Stewart, former A's pitcher. The City has said they are going with Robert Bobb, and who knows why various progressive media outlets think that's a good thing - they for some reason think they can lure an NFL team to Oakland, which just seems completely out of the question in the short- to mid-term.

The city of Oakland is already offering up a TIF district expected to yield ~400MM in tax dollars over time for debt service on the project. The A's are asking for more than double that in the form of a second, larger tax increment district. The city is publicly considering that, and is also striving to get the county to play along. County participation would seal this deal, as in CA, counties have much greater taxing power than cities.

IMO both the city and county should tell them to pound salt and I say that as a huge A's fan. My feelings aside, though, it is not accurate to say Oakland isn't trying.

Small market. Vegas is only the 40th largest media market in the U.S. Beyond LV itself and Henderson, it's open desert. It's smaller even than Milwaukee at #37, the lowest with an MLB team right now.

I was fascinated, though, to see how many larger media markets lack MLB teams. It's a long list!

#17 Orlando
#20 Sacramento
#21 Portland
#22 Charlotte
#24 Raleigh-Durham
#25 Indianapolis (I believe Indy had a Federal League team back in the day)
#29 Nashville
#30 Salt Lake City
#31 San Antonio

Seven of these nine markets have an NBA team. Infer what you will...
