A’s trade Sheldon Neuse to Dodgers for Adam Kolarek in four-player deal

The A’s are trading infielder Sheldon Neuse and minor league pitcher Gus Varland to the Los Angeles Dodgers for lefty reliever Adam Kolarek and minor league outfielder Cody Thomas, the organization announced Friday morning.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported details of the transaction.

Neuse is the A’s No. 5 prospect per MLB Pipeline, and is a versatile infielder who has 14 hits over 56 MLB at-bats. Varland is the A’s No. 28 prospect, and the 24-year-old most recently pitched for the Stockton Ports in High-A.

Kolarek was one of the Dodgers’ top relievers in 2020, going 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA over 20 regular-season appearances. The 32-year-old southpaw didn’t find as much success in the postseason, allowing a 13.50 ERA over four appearances on LA’s path to a World Series title.

Thomas is the Dodgers’ 29th ranked prospect, and slashed .236/.308/.443 overall with 23 home runs in 130 games in his last full season with the Double-A Tulsa Drillers. Another lefty, Thomas brings some power to the organization and likely will begin his career with the A’s in Triple-A with the Las Vegas Aviators.

Andrew Friedman seemed unaware that Kolarek had been traded away. When informed, he said "that's Neuse to me."

it's actually pronounced "noisy" per Bref

Andrew Friedman thought the bench was too quiet and reserved last year, so he said "let's get Neuse in here."

According to sources in the A's front office "the Nuese was getting a little too tight"

Apparently the Dodgers also sent Floro to the Marlins for Alex Vesia and a yet to be identified prospect. I guess Vesia could end up taking Kolarek's role.

Kolarek? Vesia? Varland? Was Friedman making deals or playing scrabble?

#7 I heard Marc Rzepczynski is available.

He was released by the Blue Jays last summer. Hopefully, the Yankees pick him up so we get the Rzepczynski-Higashioka battery we need.

A's trading MLB-ready depth at 3B/2B seems odd - given their current IF situation. Chapman must be considered an injury risk until he proves otherwise, Andrus is old and not good, Pinder I like at super-utility. Not convinced on Kemp or Machin as starting 2B.

It seems like they need another 2B/3B to me. Hopefully they don't plan on Lowrie being healthy or effective.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia is only 35, so the right offer could lure him out of retirement.

Justin Turner's deal is reporter for two years, which seems right for the Dodgers crashing through the tax for two seasons before shedding salary to avoid repeater penalties. Seager's free agency next winter is an interesting wrinkle in that planning, and this deal might be some long-term planning in the infield if Seager's gone and Lux's throwing issues persist.

He's their best player. If he misses a big chunk of the season, they're effed anyway.

The bigger issue is the starting 2B platoon of Kemp/Pinder. That doesn't even need an injury to be not good. Neuse might have been the best 2B on the roster for 2021.

I know the A's aren't spending, but couldn't they have outbid the Tigers for Schoop? Or even Garcia?
