A’s VP Billy Beane tips his hand about joining Mets front office

The Oakland A’s vice president is on the Mets’ short list of candidates for a new front office executive. And according to SNY’s John Harper, Beane could be interested in the job.

No idea what Steve Cohen is going to do, but in the last few days I’ve now spoken to two long-time friends of Billy Beane who say he’s very much open to the idea of becoming pres. of bb ops for Mets. Would hire a GM to handle day-to-day duties of the job. We’ll see.

Earlier this month, Beane tried to play dumb about a potential job with the Mets. Per WFAN:

“I don’t even respond to newspaper articles,” Beane said. “It’s all speculation… Normally the process [is] they would call the owner, which is how it goes. And it’s happened in the past. .... I wouldn’t even know, honestly. ... It’s all speculation … For me to worry about this and lend credibility to it, it’s all just press reports.”

Beane and Milwaukee Brewers president David Stearns are said to be atop the short list. Former Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs general manager Theo Epstein already declined to pursue a job with the Mets.

I know it's been over 20 years since they worked together but Beane was Alderson's protege back in the day ... this would seem like more of the same for the Mets.

By that reasoning, should any manager who likes platooning be expected to be another Casey Stengel?

A well-run organization hires good people, compensates them sufficiently so that they don’t leave for greener pastures, and promotes the best of them to higher level positions. Accordingly, Mr. Met should be the next President of Baseball Operations.

The Mets always unlikely quest to take the top guy from some other organization seems over with Stearns and Beane out. Who are the #2 guys they can look at? Josh Byrnes has been mentioned and I know about Thad Levine.

Beane has withdrawn his name from consideration.

He is the longest-tenured member of the org. Good to see them promoting from within.

Kind of surprised he isn't already.
