Assembly leader: A’s stadium deal running out of time in Nevada Legislature

The leader of the Nevada Assembly says the Legislature could “run out of time” on a potential deal to send hundreds of millions of dollars in public money to help construct a baseball stadium in Las Vegas for the Oakland A’s if a proposed bill doesn’t materialize within the next “week or so.”

Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager (D-Las Vegas) told The Nevada Independent in an interview Wednesday that not only had the A’s not presented “concrete” language to lawmakers on the proposed structure of public money for a new stadium, but that terms of the deal should have already been submitted in order to meet tight deadlines on a shrinking legislative calendar. There are 34 days remaining in the state’s 120-day session, which happens every other year.

“If something was going to happen, it really should have been in place last week,” Yeager said.

The comments come as the team has identified a location for a $1.5 billion stadium complex in Las Vegas but is looking to state lawmakers to approve a $500 million tax package involving tax credits and creation of a special taxation district to help with stadium construction.

Las Vegas Ballpark seats 10,000. When's the last time the A's outdrew that?

The A's drew 2583 last night. That kind of attendance opens up their options. The Field of Dreams park holds 8000.

Fun fact: according to Baseball Theatre, the A's are on pace to an incredible 127 losses. (Step aside, '62 Mets!)

I mean really! The legislature is nice enough to let the A's write the legislation, the least they could do is submit it on time so legislators have plenty of time to not read it. Rubber stamping can't be done overnight!

It's up to 130 now ... or 129.6. Unless they were doing something fancy with strength of schedule or some such. By the same token, the Rays are on pace for that many wins. The A's are leading the absolute value of run differential race 118 to 106. The A's have finally gotten their RA/G under 8.

They did almost triple that earlier in this century - when owners A) gave a #### and B) actually wanted to sell tickets

Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager (D-Las Vegas)

I assume this is no relation (much less the man himself).

And y'all being mean. The A's have topped 10,000 in 8 of 16 home games. And are (I'm not sure I believe this) AVERAGING over 10,000 per game. They did hit a stunning low of 2,583 on Tues.

No one who has followed the Fisher/Kaval show will be surprised they haven’t produced concrete plans. Their whole shtick is to pretend things are developing then spring some outrageous demand at the end. And to reveal that every increase in cost has to be born by the government in perpetuity. Maybe Nevada will fall for it.

The 1899 Cleveland Spiders are starting to sweat!

EDIT: TBF, the A's would have to lose 141 games to be worse than the Spiders winning percentage of .130 (20-134). God help us.

As of a few days ago, the A's W-L record and run differential were both WORSE than the record & run differential the 1899 Spiders had after the same number of games played (29 games?) in the season. Not sure if that's still true.

The A's at 6-25 are currently 1 game behind the Spiders pace of 7-24. Fortunately, the A's will still get to play half their games at home unlike the Spiders, who got to 12-49 before being forced to play just about every remaining game on the road, to which they finished the season on an 8-85 stretch.

Wow the A's the last two games, playing in rainy conditions with very little attendance even for them:

Winning 2-0 with their rookie Mason Miller throwing a no-hitter, only to pull him after 7 and the bullpen blow it, losing 3-2

Winning 2-0 with JP Sears actually pitching pretty well for once, only for the bullpen to blow it in the 9th. Then in the 10th Adam Oller had 2 outs and 2 strikes, only to give up a 3-run homer, with 2 more runs to follow, A's lose 7-2.

Are we sure of that? This seems like a perfect opportunity for MLB to decide that half of their remaining games will be split between Montreal, Puerto Rico and Mexico City (with all international games presented by Fan Duel of course).

They could just barnstorm around the country and call themselves the U.S. A's.
   16. Walt Davis Posted: May 04, 2023 at 03:47 PM (#6126913)
Yep, they followed the 2,583 with a 2,685 ... against divisional "rival" Seattle. And today's an afternoon game. It actually isn't that big of a stretch to imagine some sort of "costs us more to play at home than we make in ticket sales" excuse to go out on tour. Outside of 12,000 showing up for one of the Cubs games, their biggest weekday crowd has been 5,200.
   17. McCoy Posted: May 04, 2023 at 05:30 PM (#6126926)
How much do A's tickets cost?
   18. Commissioner Bud Black Beltre Hillman Fred Posted: May 04, 2023 at 05:39 PM (#6126928)
Roughly $10 for upper deck, up to $90 to sit behind the plate. Or you can buy an "all-summer" pass for general admission to ~30 games for $100.
   19. McCoy Posted: May 04, 2023 at 05:45 PM (#6126929)
Sad. If you can't sell season tickets at least cap your ticket prices at like 25 bucks. Especially when school isn't out yet.
   20. GregD Posted: May 04, 2023 at 05:58 PM (#6126937)
You speak as if their goal were to sell tickets....their like 60% massive price increase as they traded the Matts was the backbreaker for the partial and full season-ticket owners I knew...and the team made less than zero effort to reach out to them.

It actually reaches farther back than that - when they started to massively increase the prices for parking.

As many know, there aren't that many "good" seats at the Coliseum, because of the way the stadium arcs away from the playing field. But the A's have made a practice of charging a pretty penny for even those "fair" seats, and being satisfied when they were rather empty.

At a certain point, the A's seemed to have made a conscious decision to "soak" their remaining fans. Every once in a while they would come up with an idea that would increase attendance - like the "A's pass" a few years back - which was pretty popular, and so they killed it.

Of course, now that A's attendance is way down, you don't have to pay for parking if you are willing to park your car at the BART parking lot, which many do, including myself.

there aren't as many games available as there used to be, but the Yankees' $5 ticket sales on yankees.com continue as they have for at least 20 years:

"For select games during the 2023 season, fans can purchase tickets in select areas of the Terrace Level, Grandstand Level or Bleachers for $5, when using their Mastercard and the offer code MC23. Tickets for Mastercard $5 Games may be purchased in advance or on the day of the game."

only games left for this year are May 25 vs Orioles and Sept 19 vs Blue Jays.

"For every 2023 regular season home game, the Yankees will offer $10 Grandstand Tickets in select Grandstand locations. Quantities available will vary for each game."

I see 5 games left for these:

"For select games during the 2023 season, fans can purchase tickets in select areas of the Terrace Level, Grandstand Level or Bleachers for 50 percent off the advance ticket price, when using their Mastercard and the offer code MC23. Tickets for Mastercard Half-Price Games may be purchased in advance or on the day of the game."

"Using XNow verification, seniors can purchase discounted tickets to select games throughout the season. After a quick verification process, each senior will save up to 50 percent off the advance ticket price on select seats."

"Using XNow verification, teachers can purchase discounted tickets to select games throughout the season. After a quick verification process, each teacher will save up to 50 percent off the advance ticket price on select seats."

"Using XNow verification, healthcare workers can purchase discounted tickets to select games throughout the season. After a quick verification process, each teacher will save up to 50 percent off the advance ticket price on select seats."

"Using Student Beans verification, college students can purchase discounted tickets to select games throughout the season. After a quick verification process, each student will save up to 50 percent off the advance ticket price on select seats."

"Starting at $15 for select games and available for every 2023 regular season home game, the Pinstripe Pass ticket is a general admission standing room only ticket which also includes one drink (choices include a 12 oz. domestic beer for those age 21 and over with valid ID, a Pepsi product or a bottle of Poland Spring water). Fans purchasing a Pinstripe Pass will be able to enjoy the game from non-assigned standing room locations throughout the Stadium or at any of the social gathering locations, including the Mastercard Batter’s Eye Deck, FreshDirect Terrace and Toyota Terrace, Budweiser Party Decks, Stella Artois Landing or Michelob ULTRA Clubhouse. Pinstripe Pass quantities and prices will vary for each game."

..............

and this is the YANKEES.

I'll never fail to be amazed at how many people would rather piss and moan about how their MLB team has "priced them out of the joy of going to a ballgame" than, you know, go to a ballgame.

bull ####. if you can't afford any of those options, don't blame the Yankees.

I've mentioned this before, but one of the puzzles of the A's ownership in recent years has been how poorly they ran their stadium operations. This was most apparent in "big games" when they had big crowds - playoff games, Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, Giants in town, fireworks games, etc. It always seemed like they had no idea how to deal with a crowd bigger than, say, 15,000 people. So almost invariably there would be huge lines to get into the stadium, and then concessions would break down, and if the game went into extra innings oftentimes all the concessions would close so you couldn't even get a hot chocolate. So much different than the experience at China Basin. If anything, this would be when they would want the experience to shine, since a lot of the folks were "not diehards" that you would want to have a pleasant experience, so folks would come back. But I watched many folks get alienated by the poor ballpark experience. When the A's have < 12,000 fans, well, then it was/is a nice place to be - but that's not who you want to entice to come back.
   24. McCoy Posted: May 05, 2023 at 04:39 PM (#6127026)
Don't know about ticket booths and security and such but the food is all contracted out. So if the A's are only doing 10,000 a night they only really have staff to handle 10,000 a night. There aren't 300 more concession workers waiting in a locker room waiting to get called up. They'll have some on call people but if the arena/stadium isn't doing consistent large numbers they simply aren't going to have the staff.

I have gone through this same logic myself. But there are many events which are much less periodic which get staffed - at the Coliseum they have Monster truck shows and numerous other events of that sort, and at the neighboring Arena they have concerts and other specialty events. Around the Bay Area, there are of course things like Cal and Stanford football games, other concerts, etc., all of which are staffed somehow. I am sure it is a tough problem, however, and in the Bay Area that problem has probably gotten more difficult over time.
   26. Mayor Blomberg Posted: May 06, 2023 at 01:27 AM (#6127077)
If it's run by some large food-service company, yeah, they have the people they can bring in. Know someone here in Houston who works like that for Aramark, and who makes it sound like most of his coworkers couldn't get any other job.
   27. McCoy Posted: May 06, 2023 at 07:23 AM (#6127081)
Sure planned large events known months ahead of time can be planned for. The big companies can't force anybody to work. Nowadays most of them have apps or work with temp agencies that have apps. So you put out there you need concession workers and you hope you get enough.

Second issue is risk management. The concession companies bring in too many people and they lose money and or profit. It means largely nothing to the concession companies if they don't open lots of stalls for some games.

Hey! Where are our bribes? A thing this big calls for more bribes! Pony up, A's!
