Astros Combine to No Hit Yankees

A sellout crowd swarmed Yankee Stadium on a sunny Saturday afternoon hoping perhaps to see a no-hitter, which is always a chance with ace Gerrit Cole on the mound. They instead witnessed the coming-out party of Astros pitcher Cristian Javier, who outshone Cole and the Yankees and helped make history in the process.

It’s the first time the Yankees have been no-hit since six Astros pitchers combined to no-hit them on June 11, 2003, at the old Yankee Stadium. Those are the only two no-hitters thrown against the Yankees since 1958.

Kind of interesting.  Last two no hitters against the Yankees by the same team AND both are combined no nos.

Interesting that since coming into existence the Astros have had fourteen no-hitters, the most of any team over that 60-year span. I'm guessing there are teams that have only had two or three no-hitters over that period.

I imagine many casual baseball fans have no idea who Cristian Javier is, or Urquidy, Garcia and Valdez, for that matter. One of the cool thing the Astros have done over the last few years is build the foundation of a good, young rotation. Getting McCullers (and Odorizzi) back will only add to the rotation depth.

So what were you saying about the Astros' chances in New York just a few days ago? (smile)

P. S. Is this the weirdest schedule or what? The Yankees' 3 games in Houston this year will consist of a single game this coming Thursday, and then a day-night doubleheader on July 17th, on what for other teams will be the last day of the All-Star break. Apparently it's all due to the lockout that set Opening Day back by a week.

12 up, 12 down today for Urquidy so far.

Yeah, the 1917 White Sox, who went on to win the World Series.

and as I noted #crossthread the other two teams to get no-hit for 16 straight innings were 1973 AL pennant-winning Oakland and the 1981 pennant-winning Dodgers. and THEY each won the World Series as well.

coincidences, obviously, but one would think these things might only happen to shitty teams

You don't much mention of the 1908 Cardinals as being one of the worst teams in history, but they went 49-105 and were shut out 33 times. They also had 13 shutouts themselves, in which they scored a grand total of 24 runs.

Yes, those series that were missed at the beginning of the year have led to some bizarre things. I can't believe it's great for the Yankees to have to travel to Houston for a single game, and then have the all-star break cut short to travel again. Odd.

the astros dammm near got no hit twice in a row themself. it was in 08 when hurricane ike hit houston and the team was away playing the c*bs and big Z no hit them. the pitcher the next DAY no hit them for like 7 or 8 innings and mark loretta finally broke it up with a single. the guys were all freaking out about their families because the land lines and cell phones wuz out and they looked shell shocked and played like it too (and that was the end of the astros 08 run)

In 1991, the Dodgers were no-hit through nine innings, winning in the 10th. Two days later, they had a perfect game thrown against them.
