Astros’ Dusty Baker begs MLB to protect players from cheating retaliation

“I’m depending on the league to try to put a stop to this seemingly premeditated retaliation that I’m hearing about,” Baker told reporters Saturday. “And in most instances in life, you get kind of reprimanded when you have premeditated anything. I’m just hoping that the league puts a stop to this before somebody gets hurt.”

I can’t really disagree with Dusty, although I can understand the frustration and anger of the other teams.

In most instances in life, but not three years of premeditated cheating.
I bet if the Asterisks return the WS and AL championships for 2017 and 2019 (and associated money) and admit what they did, the whole thing would simmer down.

Justice has not been done and everyone knows it, and the team is thumbing their nose at justice. Why wouldn't there be retaliation? It's completely understandable.

This retaliation stuff is way overblown. I'm sure there will be some beanings, but Astros pitchers will then hit the other teams' batters, and it will die out. I'm sure Dusty Baker won't let his guys get plunked unmercifully without having his pitchers get their pound of flesh. It works both ways. In fact, the Astros would be smart to occasionally start the beanings, then after warnings by the umps, the other team will be a bit hamstrung.

Manfred just talked to the managers of teams that train in Fla and warned them against retaliation (AZ later this week).

Damn straight--you clog up my bases, by god I'll clog up yours.

Manfred should spend more of his time figuring out how not to be a feckless tool.

Right, because all baseball needs right now is a few high profile beanball wars.

If Manfred wants to really punish the Astros in the most fitting way, here's a proposal: Make the Astros pay for Gerrit Cole's Yankees contract. That way everyone will be happy.

Pretty hilarious that the only thing anyone is proactive about is protecting the poor Astros.

I hope he shows up for a game and somebody beans the #### out of him, too.

I know they're popular, but I didn't know that everyone was a Yankees fan.

Well, not counting actual Astros fans, how many of you here would root for the Astros over the Yankees the next time they meet?

An alliance? An alliance!

Alliance declined. Astros over the Yankees, and it's still not close.

Astros vs Yankees? I am on team "Nuke 'em from orbit, is the only way to be sure."

Even if I would consider it, and I sure as hell wouldn't, that's not the discussion at hand. Even Satan himself would consider sending a huge check to the Yankees every year a gross and unfair punishment to every other party involved.

Damn. Given that the Astros are the result of a DNA splice of Albert Belle and Chris Truby, there is some serious dislike of the Yankees going on.
I don't even hate the Yankees, but if I live another twenty years (questionable that) maybe I'll learn.

If I were forced to declare a rooting interest in a Yankees vs Astros tilt I'd choose the Astros in something of the same spirit that Finland chose Hitler over Stalin in WW2.

The first Aroldis Chapman-Jose Altuve a-bat should be intriguing. Chapman's "buzzing" system should be working.

I am no fan of the Yankees, but cheering for the Astros over them this year? No.

Luckily, there are plenty of other teams to cheer for.

(The Astros rank ahead of exactly one other team for me right now - Cleveland.)

(And maybe Atlanta. And Texas.)

(Kansas City?)

(Wow. There are a bunch of teams to despise these days.)

Jared Carrabis @Jared_Carrabis
14-year MLB veteran Nick Markakis went off, saying that the Astros “deserve a beating” and that Rob Manfred “should be embarrassed of himself” for the way he handled Houston’s punishment.

Since I know Rusty personally I can answer. It's the whole story on not honoring the glorious "Naps" name.
