Houston Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. underwent season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair the flexor tendon and remove a bone spur in his throwing arm, the organization announced Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know:
• McCullers suffered the injury, which he previously described as a “small forearm strain,” in February.
• He hasn’t pitched this season and last appeared in November in Game 3 of the World Series, allowing seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.
• McCullers previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018 and missed the entire 2019 season recovering.

1. The Duke Posted: June 14, 2023 at 10:27 PM (#6132930)The team is still hanging in there, 10 games over .500. Though I'm getting a 1986 Orioles vibe here -- they could lose it all suddenly and dramatically.
But what #2 says about 2023 is somewhat true of the Astros' entire run -- McCullers hasn't played a big part. The Astros are sort of muddling along this year but it's still a pretty scary team on paper. Or at least the offense is scary until you get to the OPS+ column. If -- somehow -- Abreu scales back up the cliff and hits like Abreu again, they might not even miss Yordan that much, especially if Bregman ever remembers how to be an elite hitter again and Tucker turns it up a notch. The pitchers though are still putting up a 130 ERA+ so it seems like they should be able to hang in there even if the offense can't pick up the pace.
That's what happens when you sign contracts in blood, with a guy who carries a pointy, three-pronged stick around.
Fun fact: Lance Sr played for the Miami Marlins...the minor league Marlins, in 1984.
What does any of this have to do with Arizona State's NIL payments?
