Astros near deal with veteran 1B José Abreu

The Astros are finalizing a deal that would bring veteran first baseman José Abreu to Houston, according to multiple reports. Bob Nightengale was first to report the news, which has not been confirmed by the Astros. When completed, the deal is expected to be for three years, according to Nightengale.

Abreu, who turns 36 on Jan. 29, played his first nine Major League seasons with the White Sox and consistently has been one of the top middle-of-the-order run producers in the game. His 2022 campaign featured a drop in power to 15 home runs and 75 RBIs, marking just the second time Abreu finished below 25 and 100 in these particular categories in a full-schedule season.

I hadn't realized how unusual Abreu's season was, I just saw that 133 OPS+ and figured he'd had his normal season. Instead he hit over 300 -- he's done it plenty before but still pretty unusual for a 35-yo -- and he replaced those HRs by hitting 40 doubles (again, he's done that plenty before). And he substantially dropped his K rate (pulling a Schmdit?) So that power drop is concerning. He's got to be one of the few guys who played relatively full-time and had fewer HR in 2022 than he did in 2020. Still, the EV and HH% are all the same, the G/F ratio is the same, still sprays the ball around, his HR/FB ratio plummeted.

Reports have it as 3/$58.5M. The Fangraphs crowdsource prediction was 2/$32M

$59 million for Abreu and $1 million offer to Click. Pretty funny. Crane gets Verlander for 2-3 years and they have a powerhouse at a not unreasonable cost

@Walt, I did notice and assumed that Abreu adjusted his hitting approach to be more successful with the new moderately deader ball.

He has hit over .300 four times. twice .317, and twice .304.

@penalty kick online If Crane can sign Verlander for the next two to three years, they will have a powerhouse at a price that is not unreasonable.
